For millions of people all over the world, a low sodium diet is not only a lifestyle choice, but also a necessity. Faced with high blood pressure, overworked kidneys and other related problems, a low sodium diet plan seems to be the only hope for survival.

The principal benefits of a well-balanced low sodium diet plan include lowered blood pressure, reduced strain on kidneys and liver functions, improved diuretic efficiency, reduced hypertension, weight loss and lowered risk of heart disease. In many cases, a low sodium diet plan have done a more effective job in lowering blood pressure than many other cures. The other benefit of a sensible low sodium diet plan is weight loss.

While certain amounts of sodium may help your body regulate fluids, too much of it can cause fluid retention, resulting in increase risk of heart attack and other related ailments. The amount of sodium you are allowed to have in a day depends on your individual needs only. Anything above that is a danger sign. Of all the common ailments that humans are subjected to in the modern day, Hypertension and High Blood Pressure are major killers, the common enemy being none other than sodium chloride (common salt) and its liberal use. Many people have this habit of sprinkling table salt on their food to add taste. This is something that that needs to be minimized, as it is one of the biggest sources of sodium in the diet. Also, fast food joints should be avoided, as it invariably tends to be quite high in sodium. Even diet colas have a high amount of sodium in their beverages.

Here is a sample of low sodium diet plan…

Breakfast: An orange and a piece of toast with jelly + a cup of cereal + coffee. Lunch: A lean hamburger on a bun and a cup of chicken noodle soup + skim milk + a peach + unsalted crackers. Dinner: Same as above but without the milk.

But it is necessary to remember that the above example is generic only. A diet should always be tailored according to the physiological requirements of each individual.
