Family fitness

Maintaining family fitness is no easy job in these difficult days. In most families both parents go out to work and return home late, leaving their kids alone. The kids are addicted to a diet of junk food and in the absence of physical labor, become unfit. The percentage of obese people across America is on the rise.

What does the parent do to maintain family fitness?

Healthy and nutritious eating habits. Inspire your kids from an early age itself and cultivate a taste for nutritious foods. Teach healthy food selection and portion size. Kids are more open to try something they helped prepare. You should also try to eat dinner as a family. Make a pleasant sit- down dinner a priority, at least a few nights a week. Try to avoid always preaching about nutrition and healthy eating habits. Kids see it as nagging and tend to do just the opposite. Never use food to punish or reward your child. Withholding food can create fear in a child, leading to overeating later. Use physical activity rather than food as a reward.

In fact, physical activity is a great way to maintain family fitness. Most fitness experts agree that there is a world of difference between telling kids about the benefits of being physically active and showing them that fitness is a priority in your own life. It is like leading from the front. If you are not physically active yourself, your words are likely to lose their impact. So get active yourself and make your kids participate. This would lead to increased ties between you and your kids as well.

As with anything else in life, variety is the key to making your family fitness program successful and enjoyable. Doing the same routine may be boring for you too - and kids have so less patience. So head for the park, go to the swimming pool or join a club. Do anything for your kids to maintain family fitness.
