South Beach Diet Review

One of the most hyped diets of the last 10 years has to be the South Beach Diet. Why all the fuss? Well partially because of low carb craze that swept the world in the early 2000s.

What is the foundation of the South Beach diet?

The South Beach diet, which was developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston of South Beach, Florida. He developed the diet for use in his private practice, but released the diet in book format in 2002. The South Beach is basically a low carb diet that is done in three phases. The emphasis is on eating foods like poultry, meat, fish, eggs, cheese, vegetables and nuts.

In the first phase of the diet, you go very strict on reducing carbs, and eliminate pasta, bread, and fruit during this phase. The thought is this will wean you off the high carbs. This phase of the diet lasts two weaks. In the second phase of the diet, you bring back small amounts of the forbidden food. This is done in a manner to keep your insulin level as balanced as possible.

The final phase of the South Beach diet is to keep the weight off. The book goes very in-depth into the procedure for eating for a lifetime. The thought is to keep eating a controlled amount of carbs in a limited manner. The books contains numerous meal plans to attempt to making low carb eating a real treat. The limitations of the South Beach Diet are related to all low-carb diets in general. They place a huge emphasis of strictly limiting carbs in a diet.
