Gout is a form of Arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness and tenderness in joints. The primary cause of Gout is an excessive blood level of Uric Acid (hyperuricemia) a waste product formed from the breakdown of Purines. Purines are substances found naturally in the body as also in certain foods. With the breaking down of Purines, Uric Acid is formed. Gout strikes when Uric Acid builds up in the body to such an extent that the Kidneys are unable to flush it out. The Uric Acid then crystallizes and collects round the joints causing inflammation and pain. Also, Gout can be inherited or can occur as a complication of another condition. Gout can affect anyone of any age, but men over the age of 40 and women after menopause are the worst sufferers.
Since Purine is the prime suspect, a low Purine diet is often prescribed for individuals who are suffering from Gout. A general guideline for patients with painful Gout suggests limiting alcohol consumption, especially beer and drinking 2 to 3 liters of fluid daily.
It also recommends moderate consumption of protein, limiting meat, fish and poultry and encourages tofu and eggs. Fat intake is restricted by way of consuming leaner meats, foods prepared with less oils and of course, avoiding high Purine foods that are listed below.
Foods that are high in Purine: Liver, Kidney, Brain, Mussels, Bacon, Scallop, Cod, Trout, Haddock, Veal, Venison, Turkey, Sardines and Herrings must be avoided.
Foods with moderate levels of Purines: Beef, Bouillon, Chicken, Crab, Asparagus, Duck, Ham, Kidney beans, Lentils, Lima beans, Mushrooms, Lobster, Oysters, Pork, Shrimp and Spinach all have moderate levels of Purines and hence may be eaten occasionally.
New research on Gout and associated painful conditions advocates that certain compounds in Cherries inhibit inflammatory pathways. 10 healthy women, aged 20 to 40, consumed 45 fresh sweet Cherries. Test results showed that all the women had lower blood Uric Acid levels after consuming the Cherries. The average reduction in blood Uric Acid levels was 15% or more. Cherries contain Flavonoid compounds that may lower Uric Acid and reduce inflammation. Hence, Cherry juice concentrate could be effective in reducing the pain associated with Gout.
