With age the human body needs less and less energy to sustain activities. BMR slows down, and because of this, fewer calories are burned. Other physical changes accompany it, like loss in muscle mass, declining strength and aerobic capacity. Thus, if your diet still contains the ingredients of earlier years, then you are in for trouble. Dieting after age 50 is a very tricky thing. You must take enough proteins, vitamins and carbohydrates to give you the necessary energy, but also not overdo it. Remember, after you hit the magical 50, your body needs 5 percent fewer calories with each passing decade.
When you are young you want to look and feel good . you want to get rid of that fat. But when you are on the wrong side of 50 . the concerns are more than cosmetic. Because fat can accumulate around organs, increasing a person.s risk of heart disease and Diabetes. Studies have revealed that people who severely restricted their calorie intake have drastically reduced their risk of developing diabetes or clogged arteries, the precursor to a heart attack or stroke. Low calorie intake will also result in low blood pressure. The average blood pressure of a normal diet is about 130/80, which is standard for the typical American. In comparison, if you can restrict calories, then the blood pressure is likely to fall to about 100/60.
