Lawmakers decided that cheerleading routines are "too sexy" and have introduced legislation to prohibit it.

You get to be the cool "cheerleader mom" :D"
UniqueMystique said: "Yep...I heard about that. Wonder what I'm gonna teach now???"
UniqueMystique said: "No Holly...I wasn't a cheerleader in high school. I was a leader in the pep squad though. I have coached peewee cheerleading here for the last three years and I am wanting to open up my own competitive cheer gym here. There's nothing like that here at all. I took my peewee girls (ages 7 - 10) to a competition in another town (against league rules). My girls and I had never done such a thing before. We were on the floor first at the competition too! We had no idea what we were doing but we managed to walk away with 2nd place out of 12 squads. You may not think that's such a big deal...but...I had 12 girls on my squad.....8 of which had never cheered or danced before...and 6 of which were either ADD or ADHD. The squad that placed 1st had 54 girls on it! I think we did pretty darned good!"
UniqueMystique said: "Well...with the hip hop music being so popular in the younger ages there is more of that music being used in the routines. A lot of the music is very suggestive and even if the words are removed....the dance moves from MTV and VH1 remain. I doubt that these moves are used for competitive things...but they are getting used more and more for the halftime routines and such. I saw an AllStar squad that had three year olds on it and they were doing what I'd call the 'dirty dog'....if ya get my drift? My question is though.....who's gonna demonstrate the 'censored' moves so that the coaches and cheerleaders know what's taboo?"
UniqueMystique said: "
Well, here's a Texan that's happy! I was just talking to some ladies today about a dance recital we went to where some of the dances were very inappropriate (10 yr olds "jirating" on stage). Cheerleading here isn't quit as bad, but we do have a dance team at the high school that does more of the suggestive moves. I wonder if they'll be censored too.
I hear ya about the dance recitals! We have three year olds doing inappropriate moves here. It's partly because the 40 something owner wanted to back away from the studio to pursue other things and she let a 21 year old partner up with her and she owns the majority of the studio now. People are dropping out like flies.....and we won't be back next year!
As for the censorship....it's not just for cheerleaders. It's for any school age children that will be performing in public at school sanctioned events. Cheerleading, Dance Team, Drill Team, Pep Squads, Etc.
And no....my girls have not done any inappropriate moves from my instruction...but they have learned some things elsewhere...that's for sure! I'd get, "Can we do this move?" "Uh....no, I don't think so!""
UniqueMystique said: "Well....I had 7 - 10 year olds and they looked to me for guidance. No reason for me to lead them down that path...they'll find it on their own soon enough. I actually started with 5 - 7 year olds who were flag football cheerleaders....The last two years I had been moved up a division and if I chose to coach again this year...I'll move up to the next division (10 - 13 year olds)."

As for 'booty shaking'....my 9 year old daughter and three of her friends felt the impact of what this proposed law has started this past week.
Her school has a talent show and she has been in it for the last 4 years...dancing. They tried out to the song "School's Out For Summer" done by the A-Teens, not Alice Cooper. Their dance was very basic since they choreographed most of it themselves but they had a music teacher help clean it up and make it flow better. The principal of the school was also a part of the act....the girls were acting like they were in detention and ignoring the principal. The principal says, "Now girls....I have to go to the office and take a phone call and if I catch any of you out of your seat when I get back you will have detention all summer long!" As soon as she leaves the stage...the girls get up and dance and go back to their seat before the bell rings. When the bell rings...they wake up from their desk and realize that it was all just a dream.
Anyhow....the director had them dance for the principal on Monday. On Tuesday she tells everyone in the music class that the School's Out For Summer Routine is in the show and that she loves it. Then asks the girls to step into the hall because she needsto talk with them. In the hallways she tells them that she hates the music, that it shows a lack of patriotism, that their dance is way too sexual and if they change the song and over half of the dance moves by Friday that she will let them perform. She also told them that the principal was in agreement with her. In the conversation she makes rude comments about their dance teacher too. She then told them that they needed to take some time and decide what they were going to do. The girls went to lunch and decided that they didn't like the comments that they made about the dance teacher and that they didn't want to change any of the routine....so they quit! The director was thrilled. Anyhow....three other acts that had the dance teacher's hand in them were cut from the show, as well. I'm not a complainer and usually tell my daughter to learn to deal with things.....but I decided to have a chat with the principal about this woman.
Turns out that the principal loved the routine and hated that the girls quit becuase she was looking forward to being a part of it all."
UniqueMystique said: "*Laughing* It didn't do any good, Brender!
The director sent some kids to retrieve a group of kids from their classes and the kids said that my daughter was to come too. When she got there the director looked at her and asked, "What are you doing here?" My daughter said, "You sent for me." The director says, "No I didn't....I don't need you dancing in my act....you move too much! Go back to your class!" My daughter...who is so afraid of getting in trouble walked out the door and said, "Whatever!"
Then...yesterday after music class....she informed my daughter that she was going to be an alternate for her 'dance' act.
I told my daughter that she will not dance for this woman. That if she does dance for her....the director is getting exactly what she wants. Her doing the director's moves and talent and not her own!
What I meant by the girls getting a taste of the proposed law is this: This woman does no like any dancing except for what she has choreographed. I think she saw this proposed law in the news and felt that she could get rid of some acts by stating that everything was 'too sexual' and not have to 'explain' herself too much.
I'm sorry.....but a 9 year old dancing cannot be construed as sexual! They have no hips, no boobs, and don't even know what 'sex' is! The only way it can be construed as sexual is in the minds of perverse people!"
UniqueMystique said: "I know, Brender....but this woman claims to be a 'good, Christian woman'. I fail to see it. The woman has been holding a grudge against the girl's dance teacher for the last 6 years. It's a shame that she had to show that side of herself to 9 year olds...who view the two women as 'equals'. A teacher is a teacher is a teacher...in the eyes of children.
My daughter has lost a bit of her innocence now because I found myself having to explain to her just what 'sexual' meant! I had to have a very basic 'sex' talk with her after all of this. Her reaction was, "Oooh Gross!...and she thinks we look like we're doing that???? Oooh...that's just so GROSS!!!!! Yuck!!!!!""
UniqueMystique said: "......from my understanding....the law did not pass."
UniqueMystique said: "Bill on cheerleading fails in Texas Senate

AUSTIN - Texas' cheerleading reform bill -- the one lampooned on late-night comedy shows as governmental lunacy -- appears to be benched for good in the state Senate, with nary a yell or a jump.
The measure was approved in the Texas House on May 3, with supportive lawmakers waving pompoms as the bill moved to the Senate's Education Committee, where the cheering abruptly stopped.
"We will not be hearing it," committee chairwoman Sen. Florence Shapiro said Friday.
"We have some very important work to do in the next two weeks, and that's not one of them," said Shapiro, R-Plano.
Rather than being a "mandate from the state," she said, the problem of students performing suggestive acts should be addressed by parents and school districts. Nicknamed the "booty bill," the proposal would have given the state and school districts more power to punish drill teams, dance groups and cheerleading squads who, during school-sponsored events, performed sexually suggestive acts and dressed too provocatively."

For competitions they'd stack into pyramids and stuff, but that's about all. Sheesh, I wonder what those Texas gals are doing differently?"
Holly said: "Were you a cheerleader in high school or college UM?"
Holly said: "That's great!
I agree there should be standards for what types of moves girls do (nothing too suggestive), however, I've never been offended by anything I've ever seen. So either it is different in Texas or somebody more consevative in those matters than I made the decision."
Holly said: "Well, who would have thought such a thing would bring so much controversy...especially with directors acting more childish than the kids they're teaching.
I think the bad thing about the "booty bill" is that it's very subjective. What I consider sexual will be different from UM's idea or Ms. Brender's or even that director!
I'm glad the bill didn't pass."

i listen to a radio statio up here every moring(singlnluvinit might know it...Q102) and just a couple of days ago they had this high school chick on the air she was a junior (so what,16,17?) and she wanted to be a cheerleader. well her mom wanted her to have no parts of it what so ever and was very against the whole thing. her mom said that all cheerleaders are sluts(pardon me :o ) and end up pregnant and drop out of school.ect ect. im sure you get the idea. i was floored!i have been a cheerleader since i was in third grade and i stopped my junior year to persue another sport and all i have to say is i was not pregnant, not by any means a slut(pardon me again :o ) and i did not drop out of school.it made me so mad that this mom viewed ALL cheerleaders as the anti-christ . then she brought up the new law they are trying to pass in texas (i dont know if it did or not?) i do agree with the mom when she said that the girls can do very "sugggestive" moves (i think that was the only sane thing she said) but to believe that cheerleaders are sluts(there i go again)i thought was insane. our captain was president of student government and nation honor society president.and not a slut.
Anywho, long story short (i know a little late now) it depends on the coach the girls have. if they have a coach who is ok with these moves then yeah it's unapporpriate. but if the girls have the right guidance who will tell them to tone it down like UM thats is fine. you can dance and cheer without making it a striptease. unfortunatly maybe some coaches dont know that and think if they watch mtv music videos that "oh look i can be a Rah-rah/dance coach and teach them this" that it is coaching/choreographing? i dont think so. so yeah i think that some schools should tone it down based on what they are doing but to eliminate the sport is crazy."

I agree with you UM 100%. unfortunatly they will find their way to that path but it is our resposibility that they don't take it and know right from wrong (that sounded very after scool special-sih)"

As far as how will the coaches know what's appropriate, I would guess that if the move could be considered sexual (or something a stripper would do) - Don't do it!
This law may seem frivilous (sp?) to some of you, but I'm glad that our legislators are taking a stand."

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) -- Texas lawmakers sent a message to the state's high school cheerleaders Wednesday: no more booty-shaking at the game.
The state's House of Representatives voted 85-55 to approve a bill that would forbid sexy cheers and give the Texas Education Agency authority to punish schools that allow "overtly sexually suggestive" routines at football games and other events.
The proposal must go to the Texas Senate for consideration.
"People are calling and telling me how disgusting it is to see sexually suggestive routines on the part of marching units or cheerleaders," said State Rep. Al Edwards, a Houston Democrat who sponsored the bill.
He complained of cheerleaders "shaking their behinds, breaking it down," but the proposal does not define what constitutes suggestive cheering.
Democratic state Rep. Senfronia Thompson, also of Houston, said the bill was a waste of valuable time.
"I think the Texas Education Agency has enough to do making sure our kids are better educated, and we are wasting our time with 'one two three four, we can't shake it any more?"' Thompson told legislators."
Ms.Brender said: "It sounds like this really didn't have anything to do with the upcoming law. The director has her panies in a wad about something. I'm glad you took it to the Principal. Maybe she can do something about it. People like that make kids hate school and lose respect for authority. Stay on her!!!"
Ms.Brender said: "I agree with you UM, but unfortunately there are lots of 'perverse' people out there. :("
