Refinery Explosion

UniqueMystique said: "I'm sure that many of you have heard about the refinery explosion in West Texas this morning. This happened where we live. I got to see it first hand and it's devastating. Luckily there were only 4 reported injuries and no fatalities. One of the injured is a friend of ours and has been air flighted to a Lubbock burn center...he has 3rd degree burns all over. My husband works directly behind the refinery and was supposed to be at a meeting at the refinery this morning....he was on his way there when his boss called him back to the office....the explosion happened as he got back to the office. They have all roadways into the town closed......we have to drive about 50 miles out of the way if we need to go to town. It's a miracle that there are no more injuries than there are. This is going to be hard for our community. The refinery is such a big part of this town. My husband's company also depends on the refinery. I hope that they can rebuild."

UniqueMystique said: "The refinery is saying that no one will lose their jobs due to the explosion and they plan on being up and running at 50% within two months. It has brought a lot of people to our town for the clean up process. Our hotels are full capacity. To look at all the damage it's still a wonder that no one was killed. They said that all of the office personnel was off due to it being President's Day....that building is destroyed....if it had been a normal work day those people would have been there and the outcome may not have been as good as it is. Our friend is doing well....his skin cells started rejuvenating and he did not require any skin graphs. They have stopped scraping the wounds and he's slated to return home later this week. He's been down with the flu too so he's been running a high fever that they are trying to get under control. The other huge impact on our community and surrounding areas is the price of gasoline....it's jumped about 30 cents per gallon! Looks like we'll be shelling out the higher prices fr a while....as if gasoline wasn't already outrageous! Hehehehe!!!! Oh well.....it's only money and we've a lot to be thankful for!"

UniqueMystique said: "The refinery experienced another explosion this morning. Exactly two months from the last one and was almost at the exact same time. This one was not quite as big as the last one and is under currently control. There were no injuries associated with this explosion either. Our fire department has been working nonstop lately due to these explosions and all the wildfires that are cropping up in the county. Seems like there's a fir every otherday lately. We need some rain!!!!"

UniqueMystique said: "No...they haven't determined the cause of the first explosion yet. It's still under investigation. Our friend that was injured was instructed to flip some switch and when he did...it went kaboom! It wasn't something that should have happened....it was a routine instruction. The cause of this second one is unknown too at the moment...although there were several witnesses so hopefully they will release some more information soon."

GreenEyes said: "Oh UM, I'm so glad that your husband was called back to the office and didn't make it to that meeting. The whole thing is very sad...I hope all of the injured make a full recovery and can get their jobs back. I live in a very small town that was hit pretty hard a few years back when a long time (100+ years) factory was shut down and dozens of families were forced to sell houses and move to find work. Our community is still trying to recover. I hope the refinery is rebuilt and everyone can get their jobs back. In small communities this sort of thing can have devastating effects. Your family and community will be in my thoughts and prayers UM."

I can understand why you are worried about the long term effect this is going to have on your community....... My husband works for Exxon.... at a petrochemical plant where they produce ethylene...... and locals fear that one day, it will blow off the face of the earth...... My better half has to travel 17 miles to the plant, but I think that is preferable to living on its doorstep..... I hope things work out for you all Cheers"

Diamond said: "That was a close call for your husband, Unique. That could have been a lot worse. I'm keeping your friend and your community in my thoughts and prayers."

Diamond said: "That whole story just sounds creepy. Are things getting back to normal in your town? I'm sure that had to be an awful moment for everyone that lives there."

nancy_mrn said: "Unique I am glad to hear about your husband is alright and that your friend will get to come home soon. We had a similar explosion a few months back, unfortunally one person was severly burned and he did not make it. But I remember seeing the flames from the interstate and an acquantance of my husband lived close enough the blast blew open his front door. I hope the town can work together to get things running smooth again....as for high gas prices..well it is getting to be a way of life here"
