Clothes are weird sizes now

pixiechic said: "fat man store, lol. even sears offers a fairly large big and tall section. also womens sizes. people are getting bigger every day. it is just another market for clothing makers."

pixiechic said: "
i know plus sized clothing has gotten better... i've been fat long enough to have seen some improvements, but that doesn't mean i'm going to say it's GOOD. anyway, there is a lot of variation even in brands, but it's usually between different cuts of jeans. you might fit a relaxed pant in one size but have to go up a size if you want something like a flare... it gets aggravating at times, but it's better to just wear what fits than try to always cram yourself into clothes (or have something falling off) just because you want to stick to one size.
good call. wearing clothes that don't fit right don't make you feel any better about yourself. if one were so inclined, they could probably roll out their own plus sized clothing line. something fun and funky!"

shanshine said: "Maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems to me a lot of the more trendy, younger clothing stores seem to be going in the opposite direction. Of course I'm overweight now, but a few years ago when I was around 120 I still had difficulty fitting into some shirts labeled extra large or large and even my regular size in jeans would be a tough fit at certain stores. I used to do a lot of shopping through delias, and their clothing always seemed to label smaller sizes as larger. I suppose it has a lot to do with styles and trends at the time, tighter clothing has definitely made a comeback."

chefgirlrd said: "Ok it's just not me then, Jeans especially. I have some that vary in size. 18 to 16 some junior 17's. It also depends what department you buy them in. If you buy a 16 in womans, it is bigger. If you buy it in normal section, it is a litttle smaller. and 16 juniors are alot smaller. Heck, Im just happy to be in the teens. And to be able to buy mostly normal clothes and jammies. There is a plus size store called Torrid. They have clothes that you will never see anywhere else in big sizes. They are also on the web. But if there is a store near you, it is worth the trip. And the shoes!!!!! Oh my, I luv that store. :D"

believe said: "I hate to try on clothes at the store and as a matter of fact I hate buying clothes, weird thing I'd rather buy a new book, cd, movie, or board game or stationary than clothes the last thing I actually bought was probably almost half a year ago and that was a top. Now my sister has bought me sweat pants for christmas, but I do not like to shop for clothes. I also would like to wait till the day I buy a size 11/12 or maybe like a 9/10. If that is the case I have a long time before I will be able to buy any clothes for myself. Shoes are the same way. I guess some of that comes from the fact that there was never and still is never enough money around and if there was,I bought things I liked more than needed. :)"

Yum said: "Yea, sometimes in Old Navy I am a zero, but then I can be a 1, 2, 3 or **Gassp** even a 4 or 5!! (juniors, I am 14)"

rockprincessFF said: "Gosh Yum, what are you on here for? LOL! I'm just kidding! But seriously, you're lucky! :)"

Henrietta said: "Some people probably do like it."

Henrietta said: "I'd rather just know the horrible truth. Why stay in denial?"

Heather said: "I know that plus size clothing for both men and women is a newer market that retailers are trying to cater to a little bit more these days. Even Wal-Mart offers a pretty big selection of plus sized clothing."

Heather said: "I still have some of my old clothes from when I was a teen. Of course, that was back in the 80's  but an old 13/14 is closer to todays size 8. Whether or not this is indicative of clothing manufacturers in general, I don't know, but it stands to reason.."

Heather said: "I can be the same way about buying clothes, but you have to have an out fit or two so you don't look like a ragamuffin. Plus you feel more confident when you wear a nice outfit (no matter what your size is) I hate shopping in places like Kaufmanns because sizes vary so much from manufacturer to manufacturer. Trying stuff on to hate it is a real drag! One of my favorite places to shop at is a place called Chico's. They have material that feels nice on your skin and they way they size is size 0 through 3 or 4? The clothes there are a little pricier, but easy to mix and match."

spunkymonkey said: "i know that i have pants in like 4 different sizes it just depends on which brand of pants i buy. i think its wierd that there are people out their that know they are like say a size 22 and buy a brand where the 22 is like a 18 and it makes them feel better about themselves, all i know is i get a pair of pants a size smaller than i usually get then go and buy that size in another brand and i cant even button them it really upsets me"

Elaine said: "Every manufacturer is different. Even Levi jeans vary a lot within the same size. I think it is because when they cut the fabric, it is done in bulk. By the time they cut the last layer of fabric the cuts may be an inch more than the original template. Cval. Plus size clothing is a little better than days past. it used to be only moo-moo's. Those were really bad and ugly."

Elaine said: "I was at the are museum and they have a bunch of suits of armor from the past. They look VERY small compared to the "average" size of a man today. Most of them weren't that big at all."

Darren said: "I went to buy my usual "2X" at the Fat Man store the other day. I tried on some Reebok sweat pants and these things were HUGE! They were bigger than you could imagine. So I ask the woman there and she's like "Yeah, they make all the clothes big like that now. It makes people feel better about themselves". This freaked me out! Why lie to people about their pant size? What do you think of this situation?"

Darren said: "Imagine that! A 0! It's hardly a size at all :)"

Darren said: "I definitely see this trend continuing."

helplesscase said: "Strange."

cvalh said: "define big selection of plus sized clothing, please... i'm so tired of elastic wastes, tapered legs, huge tunic tops... i'm young, and have a pretty decent but unique fashion sense, so i feel somewhat stuck in a rut at old navy and lane bryant. i have to say, i can't wait till i'm small again, so i can go back to some of my quirkier clothes... i remember when i thought a size 13/14 was huge, but i miss those days! as for the fact that clothing sizes don't mean what they used to... i don't care what clothing sizes end up meaning, i just wish the stores could all agree!"

cvalh said: "i know plus sized clothing has gotten better... i've been fat long enough to have seen some improvements, but that doesn't mean i'm going to say it's GOOD. anyway, there is a lot of variation even in brands, but it's usually between different cuts of jeans. you might fit a relaxed pant in one size but have to go up a size if you want something like a flare... it gets aggravating at times, but it's better to just wear what fits than try to always cram yourself into clothes (or have something falling off) just because you want to stick to one size."

cvalh said: "my grandmother talks about how she's been a size 16 most of her life (she's 75). But you look at pictures of her when she was 20 years old and a size 16, and she had a gorgeous figure that most people would kill for. Now, she's relatively large. She jokes about how the size 16 has grown with her."

cvalh said: "
Yea, sometimes in Old Navy I am a zero, but then I can be a 1, 2, 3 or **Gassp** even a 4 or 5!! (juniors, I am 14)
Gasp. A 4 or 5... Lol, with my build, I'm physically incapable of being that small."

cvalh said: "It is pretty dramatic, actually. My grandmother has been a size 16 her whole life, but I was looking at pics of her from the late 40's, early 50's, and she was really small. Definitely smaller than a 10 or 12, I'd say. Maybe a 10, but I'd guess an 8."

spectrachic311 said: "I can't even shop at Walmart anymore because all the clothes are too big for me. I can wear clothes from the Gap or Old Navy because they are cut better. Most clothes are too long for me or just too big. I mean, it's kinda good for people to have a big selection of clothes no matter what size you are, but it's also frustrating to ONLY find big clothes. I find it hard for me to buy anything that isn't too "teeny-bopper" looking because I always need Jr.'s sizes. Petite clothes are too old-ladylike, so I can't buy those either. Grr. I think dress sizes for like, formal gowns and wedding dresses is still "unvanity-sized" since I bought my wedding dress in a 6 and normally I have to wear a 0 or 1. That's the thing too...everyone always talks about how Marilyn Monroe was a size 14. Today, that's probably a 6 or 8 I think. So she really wasn't that "voluptuous"."

spectrachic311 said: "I inherited a bunch of vintage 1960's clothes from a lady at church and the sizes were still on them. I was surprised to find out that a 6 fit me like a glove...normally I'm a 0. So if the sizes go by hip/waist measurements, I'd guess you'd add 6 numbers to the new sizes to get the old ones? So a "2" now is an old 8, a "4" is an old 10, a "6" is an old 12 and an "8" is an old 14. I guess you really would have to see the old clothing though to really be able to tell. And that was from the 60's, so I don't know if they were different from the 30's and 40's too. I wonder what "plus sizes" were like back in the day? I bet a lot of people just made their own clothes if they couldn't buy them anywhere."

Scarlett said: "Hahaha yeah my sister is a size 0, and she is soooo freaking skinny, it's kind of gross actually haha you can see her hip bones jutting out when she wears certain things. And I definately think sizes are changing and that is because we as a nation are getting bigger...a true 14 right now is probably a true 16 in reality...but oh well we get fatter and bigger sizes get smaller go figure right? Probably having something to do with what Eddie said about how it will affect our self esteem and we will stop buying the larger sizes..."

Scarlett said: "Yep. The average size for women in the US is a size 14 which borders on being plus size."

Scarlett said: "No it's not that dramatic. I believe Marilyn was either a 10 or 12...she wasn't skinny or anything, but she was a nice size and so very beautiful."

Scarlett said: "
It is pretty dramatic, actually. Eddie said: "Yeah, I know it's quite an old topic (almost a year ago) but I've worked at a Big Man store (Casual Male: Big & Tall) and they make those clothes huge and label them what would normally be smaller. For instance 3XL on a 4XL shirt. I guess it's to make people feel OK about themselves. I mean if people noticed that they were 4XL from a 3XL all of a sudden, they might lose weight and *gasp* stop buying clothes from that store once the weight is off."

Eddie said: "What a gluttonous nation we have here, aye? lol"
