Christmas day :) how bad you gonna be??

cvalh said: "Grandma and mom are both gonna be here, so I'm sure there will be ridiculous amounts of food made. and then left with me. i know we're only buying a breast, though, so at least that limits some of the food. desserts do worry me - ugh. i also know we'll have cinnamon roles christmas morning, and my grandma might insist on doing a "big" breakfast on christmas eve morn. plus my dad will want wine and cheese... there's a reason i hate having the relatives come!"

spectrachic311 said: "I usually follow my normal plan even during Christmas. I get kinda sick if I go too overboard! I do allow myself a cookie or two and I do enjoy my uncle's famous cheese tray, but I still try to not overdo it too much."

spectrachic311 said: "At holiday meals, I usually try to fill about half my plate with salad and use a nonfat or lite dressing. Then I put about a serving size of meat (usually turkey, it's my favorite) with no skin on my plate and a very small portion of my very favorite sides (my gramma's dried corn pudding and mashed potatoes are mine). And I usually don't eat pie for dessert because I really hate pumpkin pie and that's what everyone always makes. So I have a good cup of dessert coffee (sometimes spiked with a bit of Bailey's) and it's not nearly as high in calories but it feels like dessert. If you plan ahead just a little like this, you can avoid eating 4000 calories in one meal! Oh, and I always try to stick with my exercise routine too...I make sure that turkey goes to help fuel a good run the next day!"

xlilphishx said: "Well, I have updated my journal with my answer to that question: I plan to enjoy myself. I am just working out on my scheduled dates so that I can eat what I want! I plan on eating my Cuban food on X-Mas Eve and lasagna and dessert. I don't care- it's the holidays! It doesn't feel like the holidays when you don't eat a lot!!!!!"

DrCOOL959 said: "I'm with spectra, Use moderation, not just because its healthy for you but I speak from experience when I say nothing ruins a good celebration like wanting to collapse on the couch and praying for time to pass so as to keep from seeing everything you just ate spread out in a collage on the floor because you got sick from eating too much."

**Shorti** said: "My good eating is screwed on Christmas Eve/Christmas day. I really dont over eat in terms of QUANTITY, but inevitable the QUALITY of what I eat will be bad. Christmas Eve: fiance's grandmother makes tamales (that little old guatemalan lady makes the best tamales on the planet!) Christmas morning: Fiance's family will be making sausage gravy & biscuits from scratch. Christmas lunch: we'll be on the road...so it doesnt look good Christmas dinner: my sister's homemade crab dip and traditional meal. *sigh* Day after Christmas I am getting on my bike for at least 40 minutes, I'll need it."

Between those office parties, family gatherings and leftover splurges, it's no wonder. "A holiday meal can be up to 4,000 calories. And 3500 calories is one pound, so you're gaining a pound from just one meal," explained Ruth Frechman of the American Dietetic Association. Frechman says a good chunk of those calories come from the "extras" like drinks, appetizers and desserts. Rather than skip out on them altogether, Frechman recommends alternatives, especially with alcohol. A rum and Coke is 100 calories more than rum and Diet Coke. Light beer shaves 50 calories off regular beer. Regular coffee versus flavored coffee can be a 300 calorie difference, and sparkling water with a splash of juice is almost no calories. Appetizers can also get you into trouble. Instead of fried appetizers and creamy dips, which can be more than 50 calories per bite, Frechman recommends shrimp cocktail, veggies with salsa, and air popped corn sprinkled with seasoning, which has virtually no calories. For that after-dinner sweet tooth, you can have 13 meringues for the same calories as one bite of pie. It's just 20 calories for a candy cane, 100 calories for a crunchy, chocolate biscotti, and virtually zero guilt for fruit. So go ahead and enjoy that holiday meal without having to pay for it in the end, or in the thighs.[/QUOTE] food for thought anyways."

joshysgirl said: "we as well have a 3-day christmas. sunday w/ my parents, monday w/ his, and tuesday at both grandparents. i love christmas and i am not going to deprive myself all the things i love. i plan to eat pretty much what i want, just in moderation. my goal for christmas week is not to lose weight but to maintain...and if i gain a pound or two--oh well, it'll come off-christmas only comes once a year!"

nancy_mrn said: "Well I have three days of celebration to get through; my house christmas eve we are having pasta (soo bad), christmas the usual traditional food, then the day after the in-laws traditional food again....I am going to try and avoid the sweets but the bread is going to kill me"
