Any highly processed refined carbohydrate is only good for energy (calories) and not really for much else. Proteins are a much higher QUALITY nutrient because they contain amino acids that help you rebuild your muscle tissue. I don't eat a ton of refined carbs, but I do eat a lot of "unrefined" carbs...whole grains, fruits, veggies, etc. That way, I get the energy from the carbs and also get more nutrients with them as well. I never got the whole theory on "eat 50 calories extra per day and you'll gain 10 lbs a year" or "walk 10 minutes a day and you'll lose 10 lbs a year". It doesn't really make that much sense. Your body can maintain its weight pretty easily with variations as great as 250-500 calories difference per day. I guess if you always ate 500 extra calories per day, you'd gain weight, but I hardly think 50 is going to do anything. Similarly with weight LOSS...you have to do some serious exercise to burn off 500 calories a day. You aren't going to lose much of anything by walking 10 minutes a day (although, it's not a bad idea) unless you are very very out of shape and can't do other activity. But even then, you have to combine an eating plan that's lower in calories with an exercise plan so you can create a caloric deficit and eventually lose some weight."

I don't think carbs make you fat, or protien makes you fat or ....fat makes you fat its how much of any you choose to eat that makes you fat. Add to that inactivity and it really is no wonder. All these type of books do is to add to the confusion."
