I'm torn on this issue, because I don't want to see people suffer, but the state of immigration is getting really out of hand. There are times (and I know these are extreme cases, you don't have to tell me) when crazy laws and loopholes make it such that the illegals have it better than citizens."

Of course the Mexican GOVERNMENT wouldn't go for it... That's sorta the point :p"

That is why there are programs like Doctors without Borders and doctors that go down there to do pro bono work for people that can't afford to see a doctor in the city. I think that illegal immigrants should be entitled to get healthcare, even if their paperwork is missing or whatever. If they are working an honest job, they should be entitled to see a doctor."

I am sorry I am wording it this way but as a First Generation American who is a daughter of two very hard working immigrants from Cuba and Italy- my parents did it legally and these people should too. I don't like how my taxes are paying for them to receive basic care. They need to do things the right way. They need to send them back because these people broke the law. THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO RECEIVE CHEMOTHERAPY WITH MY TAX DOLLARS. Governor Spitzer of NY is trying to pass a law where illegals can get their driver's licenses. Are you fricken joking me? Some of these Politicians are just handing everything out to these people. What the hell has this country come to? It seems like they don't have any control over the borders when we need it most! I seemed to go off topic a little b/c this is a very touchy subject. My boyfriend was rear ended by an illegal immigrant and the idiot had the audacity to sue him for a million dollars?!? Isn't that a joke? First off, it was the guy's fault that he hit Pat and second- he had no license! And, he had the nerve to try and get money from Pat! Some of these people just want everything handed to them. That is not the American Dream to me."
DBrew said: "Well, that is probably the same treatment these people would get in their native land. I do not know if Mexico or the other countries down south offer a Medicaid type thing but it is doubtful. That is why they are here, right? To have a better life.
I think the ammount of illegal residencies IS getting out of hand, but that is no reason to be downright cruel. They should be allowed the chemo in my opinion. I just can not stand taking hope away from people and allowing them to suffer (they would suffer greatly either way, though, because chemo is nasty!)."
DBrew said: "Yay Lakelady! Hi !!!!!!
You are the master politician! You really should do something "copacetic" for the government!:)
BTW- I have been using the word copacetic on a regular basis lately. He he"

Dittoed!
You can really see it down south.. It's BAD. It's one thing to want to try to become an American, it's another to try to change America into Mexico.
I don't care where you are from, but if you are here illegally- you have NO rights (government wise- not human wise). You should not vote or have any say in the country. You should be arrested and shipped back to your country. Come here legally. Contribute to the society!!! If you really like it, become a citizen. Learn our culture and history. (i'm not saying get rid of your own, because i'm all about personal culture.)
Become an American. Don't destory it.
(this goes with any other country...)"
Kat_the_Amazon said: "I don't blame illegal immigrants wanting to come over here at all. I mean, this country treats illegals pretty darn good.
I do wish that the government would make it easier for people to become citizens. We def. need to reform that. I'm all about people coming into this country with good intentions. Help the country. Contribute to the society.
Of course, the government needs to become more strict with the illegal situation. Illegal IS against the law. I can't go out and kill someone because i want to. I can't rob someone because i'm poor. They need to enforce the laws, instead of creating laws for illegals.
And the healthcare... Doctors HAVE to help the people that come into the ER. They can't refuse to help because they are illegal and have no health care and no real way of paying. Millions of dollars are wasted because illegals jam up the hospitals and who pays for all this? The legal citizens."

I just think that is totally ridiculous. No country would ever agree to pretty much be taken over and re-arranged as another country sees fit. The only way that would happen is if the U.S did it by force... and that would probably start another war. I know Mexico is really corrupt and I really do feel for those people suffering there..
The U.S. really confuses me. One the one hand some people are being refused chemotherapy.. and on the other hand you read stories on CNN about a little boy being severely burned in a car bomb in Afghanistan and the states bringing the child to the U.S to perform a complicated surgery to help him.
Foreigners(I'm including myself here as a Canadian) don't hear about the refusal of chemo.. they only hear the stories about the U.S doing wonderful things for non-citizens. So I don't blame them at all for going over there illegally."

To Lakelady. I say leave Mexico out of it. Doesn't America already have enough troubles without "conquering" another country?"

You misunderstand. I don't want to 'conquer' anyone. I want to annex, the way a large, growing city annexes smaller towns nearby as it grows, making them the beneficiaries of that city's greater resources. Mexico has it all. Good climate, tourism, rich natural resources, shipping, oil, arable land.... The ONLY reason for the grinding poverty there is the firmly entrenched, totally corrupt, government. My airline pilot hubby knows several mexican nationals who are pilots with his company. They say if it were put to a vote of the people, whether or not they wanted to become part of the United States, it would be a landslide. As part of the United States the area would thrive, add BILLIONS to our coffers, effectively end illegal immigration because the biggest source of that problem would be gone. All Mexicans would now be U S citizens. It's a win/win for everyone concerned"
lakelady said: "
That's why I think it would be considered more "conquering" than annexing. The country isn't going to go for it at all. IMHO.
The people would go for it. The fat cats in the Mexican government who live high, while their citizen's starve, would not. You're right there. After a legal vote, where the U S was voted in....yeah...we'd probably have to shoot a dozen or so fat cats who are raping their own people so thay can have the best of everything. I have a really hard time feeling bad about that."
lakelady said: "In spite of all our social problems, In spite of our health care nightmare, In spite of bad things like Angel and Midnights nightmare, In spite of ALL of it, I love this country. American's from the richest to the poorest among us, give TWICE as much to charities, domestic and foreign, than any other country on earth! We carved this nation, just a baby compared to all the rest, out of raw, barren, completely untamed land. We didn't have social programs available to us when we got here to feed, house, and clothe us, and educate our children, or make sure we had roads, and water, and light and heat. We starved , died in droves from disease, buried our infants on the wagon trail, (my infant aunt rose among them) and built shelter literally out of dirt, We spoke dozens of different languages when we arrived, but we all learned one. And in spite of the fact that we barely had shelter, the very FIRST thing the smallest of communities did, was build a school. Gone the days when only the monied could teach their children to read and write. Schoolchildren reciting Tennyson on the way to fetch water from the creek, conjugating Latin verbs in a one room sod schoolhouse.
And in the face of these hardships we formed the best, most just, system of government in the world, a government that our countries of origin copied from US, the brand new nation. Each and every citizen guaranteed by our constitution, the protections of individual rights set forth in that document.
When teen was three years old, I had him commit to memory the opening paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence, to recite at the very (MUCH smaller) party we're preparing for now. With great pride he recited, "...We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their creator with certain UNAVAILABLE rights....."
Of course everyone burst out laughing, with comments like, 'ain't it the truth'. But in reality, no other country on earth has managed to incorporate so many different religions, and cultures, and plural ideas, as this one has. Faced with the same dilemma, though with fewer cultures, the former USSR had to resort to communism and restricting the freedoms, both of travel, and lifestyle, of ALL it's citizens. Of course that country has now reverted back to it's nearly original boundaries.
Oh, we're different. We rail at each other, we scream at the stupidity of everyone who doesn't agree with us, we complain about the government, we moan at our plight. But when attacked we come together as a unit thousands of times stronger than the sum of our parts.
As world war two raged around us, we minded our own business. We were a sleepy little, largely rural, country with barely any Navy, or airforce , or a trained army. Then Japan attacked pearl harbor amd killed 3,000 defenseless, unprepared, sailors and civilians. The oil from the engines of the U.S.S. Arizona floats to the surface to this day. I've seen it. And the names of the sailors buried with that fine ship.
On that occasion, on 8 Dec 1941, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said prophetically, "I fear we have awakened the sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve."
Boy was he right! The U.S. government asked the car manufacturers for 1000 planes in three months. They got 10,000. and jeeps, and tanks and guns and ammo. My mother took time out from her nurses training and built bombs. She dropped her watch into one. My dad, born in 1906 and too old to go to war, trained navy pilots. Knitting, pie-baking, flower-growing housewives put on their cover-alls and built the most indestructible ships, the toughest airplanes, the most reliable bombs, and guns, and bullets and.... They grew their own food, they went without, they collected pennies and bought war bonds instead of food. No-one complained.
We've done it again after 9-11. We've managed to walk the line between the war on terror and the constitutional rights rights of our Muslim faithful citizens. Miraculous!
It's a sappy song, I've always thought so, but day after tomorrow when my teen's little garage band plays, "I'm proud to be an American", I'll have a tear in my eye...so will he, so will everyone there from airforce vet to punk teen. I AM proud to be an American.
And now, the resources that our forbears, and our sons and daughters now, give their very life-blood to protect, are threatened by an invasion of people who did NOTHING to build this country, have done NOTHING to protect it, and have done NOTHING to advance it. They are however, willing to suck all the resources we charitable Americans will give them. Americans were badly suppressed. They corrected that. It was called the Revolutionary War, and it was won by children, and farmers and sailors and housewives, with no military training at all, against the best trained forces in the world at the time.. If not become part of us, [B]let them solve their own problems. We did.
