Yard WorkYard Work
shrkntz said: "I think that doing yard work is a great way to workout if you can't make it to the gym. There are so many things we do at home that we don't realize is classified as dredded excercise. The bending, lifting, pulling etc, are very good excercise. Don't feel bad when you can't get to gym. Make it when you can and as long as your still active, its all that counts."
shrkntz said: "I went out and got some dirt and seeds and started doing planting. I also cleaned my yard and did spring cleaning. I saw the post and decided maybe it is time to do some weeding etc. because it is so nice out. I was out for about 3 hours, daily I go outside and weed the yard. I love gardening. Reward... some darn nice strawberries and cucumbers. Nummy!"
shrkntz said: "Buy some thin gardening gloves from dollar store, saves on torture on the hands and if you have to, throw em out...they were only a dollar ;O)
Now when do I give my adress for the shipment of salsa????"
shrkntz said: "Let me buy a huge bottle of calcium and rethink the request heheh
It sounds so good though *wines*"
shrkntz said: "I like to have extra hot salsa and mix low fat sourcream in with it, then dip some low fat tortilla chips in and watch a good movie. I watched fear factor last week and they ate habanero peppers. I think you have to have a strong stomach to eat the hottest pepper there is. Banana peppers to me are the hottest lol."
Heather said: "The fresh air and sunshine will do you wonders.
Plus, you still break a sweat.
I have a dumb question (maybe you can answer, maybe not)
The other day I spent about an hour pulling wild green onions out of the landscaping by our front door. There are no other weeds, really. Just wild green onions.
Is there anyway to stop them from growing besides getting the bulb all the way out?"
Heather said: "I think that I got most of the roots, pulling those nasty things is a pain!
They don't smell good, and to make it interesting, there are low ground pricky bushes you have to pull them through.
I almost feel like tearing all of it out. Even wearing gloves you get pricklies.
Just start over."
Heather said: "That will be a great for making fresh salsa.
And then you can add some of those pesky green onions, too!
LOL."
Heather said: ":)
I found more of those crazy things on the other side of the house!
I'm gonna have to go pull and dig, again."
Heather said: "Thanks!
Have fun with your tiller. Today is Earth day, so a good time to play in the dirt!"
Heather said: "I doubt I could eat that sort of hot, hot stuff!
Mild banana rings are about as hot as I get.."
Heather said: "I like frogs!
Congrats on the new addition to your family :)
I can hardly wait to see the pictures!"
helplesscase said: "That sounds like a pretty good workout...It probably made up for not going to the gym."
UniqueMystique said: "I know that this sounds really bad...but I haven't been to the gym since Monday. I started working in the yard and our land Tuesday and haven't been able to stop. I think I'm getting a great workout though because the scale has moved a bit since last week. I've been burning weeds, mowing, chopping, digging, planting, watering, cleaning outside windows, cleaning up our patio and front porch, etc. Feels good getting some good 'ol vitamin D from the sunshine too....I feel so energized."
UniqueMystique said: "I seriously doubt it...unless you use some sort of weed killer. I think they are kinda like grassburrs...if ya don't get the root out...ya still got a problem!"
UniqueMystique said: "*Sighs* I thought we had some semblance of grass popping up in our back pastureland......I was wrong...it's those danged onions.....millions of them....sprouted about 2 inches above the ground. Good thing that we don't use that place much since we no longer have horses. I just hope that they don't creep up into my yard!!!!"
UniqueMystique said: "Much more fun being out in the sunshine on a nice clear day than couped up in a hot sweaty gym!"
UniqueMystique said: "As long as it's not a power 'riding' lawn mower. ;)"
UniqueMystique said: "We have quite a bit of land that we used to have horses on. We no longer have the horses....so someone has to keep the pastures cleared. That someone happens to be me since my husband doesn't like doing anything that requires sweat! :p He does mow the yard occasionally...but he uses the riding mower. I hate it....so when I mow, I use the push mower. We've quite a few trees, flower beds, and a landscaped yard."
UniqueMystique said: "I planted 20 tomato plants today. No idea where my husband got them but he only paid a dollar a piece for them. They are about two feet tall and already have blooms on them. Seems like I'll be freezing a lot of tomato sauce...hehehehe! Now if I could just get the rest of the garden tilled up and ready to plant in."
UniqueMystique said: "Ha!
Ha!
Ha!
Very funny, Snap! :p"
UniqueMystique said: "Well...I'm off to see if I can get my tiller started. Wanting to get my garden area in good shape! Happy digging and pulling, Snap! :p"
UniqueMystique said: "I love working in the yard...but what drives me up the freaking wall is getting dirt under my fingernails!!!!"
UniqueMystique said: "*Laughing* My salsa would probably burn a whole through your stomach lining! I am in Texas...remember? Hehehehe!!!! I can eat whole fresh jalapenos without whincing and I often cook with habaneros! But lay that address out for me if ya think ya can handle it! ;)"
UniqueMystique said: "OK.....I'm all stoved up this morning! I worked from 8am yesterday morning until 1pm in the garden. I took a break and went to a movie with my kids and then came back to work in the garden from 5pm until the sun went down. Every joint in my body is stiff and aches!!!!! I tilled up a 90 X 30 area and then hoed and raked it all into neat little rows and planted a few things. I'm still not done planting but plan on getting it all done in little spurts this week.
Advil!!!!! Please kick in soon!!!!!
*Puts a note up to send Qian a bottle of salsa*"
UniqueMystique said: "We had moles in our yard when we first moved here. Not sure why but after we planted St. Augustine grass...they moved to the pastureland behind us. Maybe the roots are too dense for them to push the ground up...I dunno."
UniqueMystique said: "Ok....I had something very odd happen here on Saturday morning. I had just bought some plants from the Wal-mart here and came home to plant them that morning. The lady at the store was watering the plants and complaining that she was having to water them by hand because they all came in on a truck late last night and no one watered them when they were put out. She couldn't drag the hoses out because it was during busy hours.
Anyhow....I planted the flowers in some outside pots that I have. Watered them.....then went to discard the cartons that they had came in. I went back to look at my accomplishment and to my surprise....something was looking back at me!
This may not be weird to some of you...but it was definitely weird for me. There was a Green Tree Frog staring back at me. We do not have these creatures in this area....all we have are brown toads and horny toads! I was facinated with it. It was so tame too that I couldn't leave it outside to get eaten by one of the many cats in the neighborhood....so my daughters now have a new pet...they named him "Sticky".
All I can figure is that the frog was buried inside the plant containers. I did some research on the plant company and they are based in Alabama! This frog had a long ride! He's so cool though!
I'll post some pictures when ever I get them downloaded on the computer."
Razor said: "I am a yard freak. I will have yard of the month. My subdivision is brand new though and they are still building a bunch of houses so our trees and such are still new. I fertilize, weed , and mow constantly. I have a manual reel mower. The kind you would see on Donna Reed or Leave It To Beaver. Now there is some exercise. I have some landscape lighting and I have to edge using the weed eater around them and all that bending made me very sore the next day."
Holly said: "You've burned calories, lost weight, AND you have a fully spring-cleaned yard.
Sounds good to me."
Holly said: "Oh my goodness! What a cute discovery! :)"
Qian said: "I was looking at fitday.com and mowing the yard with a power mower still burns about 700 calories (it takes me 2 hours to mow my yard). That's an awesome workout."
Qian said: "UM your a woman after my own heart, I love spicy. The hotter the better. Funny thing is both my kids are the same way. My daughter (13 months) eats salsa straight, and my son already eats jalepenos straight. My favorite spicy food is called ma po do fu. it is a dish from szechuan china and is extremely hot. The best i ever had was when a lady used a spice called mala. it was so hot my entire mouth went numb. I loved it."
Qian said: "Mowed my yard for the first time on saturday. Remebered why I hate my yard. lots of very steep hills, and a lot of mole hills. I hate moles. Any ideas on getting rid of these pests?"
Qian said: "I worked at Sutherland's a while ago. We would get our plant shipments in and there would always be frogs, and the occasional snake in them. Lots of fun."
