Down and Out

Samara said: "Well I haven't said much lately on here...actually a good reason for that. I joined the local gym and have been going almost everyday for atleast an hour. Mainly walking, stair climbing, and stationary bike for now because I don't know what half of the othre equipment is for. :( Any how today I only stayed for 30 minutes walking and biking. I feel bad that I didn't stay my whole time but I just felt so tired and worn down that I didn't want to stay. I'm hoping tomorrow will be better. Just kinda down tha I didn't stay, I could back but I know I wouldn't have anymore drive to workout now then I did before. Anyone have any suggestions on what keeps you motivated to go everyday to the gym. I can still do my sit-ups at home, but my feet are killing me from walking and work. >< Thanks for hearing me out ~Savannah~"

The machines will get easier. If you find you are sore in certain areas, such as calves, and abdomen, work easy but steady on them as they will not hurt so much as they get used to everything. I remember when I first started a year ago and it was horrid. My legs hurt, my whole body was tight, I was sore. As I went more and more, my body did not hurt so much. It takes about a week before it will fade. If you keep at it, you will find that you will get used to some of the machines. I found that if I stretched my body before I worked out that I was not so sore the next day, stretch your muscles, most gyms have handouts that they can give you on proper stretching. The whole tiredness will go away. Make sure you eat an hour before you go. Nothing too heavy, an apple or sandwich. Another idea, take a warm bath later on that day, it helps relax the muscles. I drink a bottle of water that was previously frozen during my workouts, keeps you hydrated and less tired too. Start slow and don't worry about situps and other things until you are set at doing the 30 minute workout first. Little at the start, maintain a plan of what you'll do each day. Set aside smaller steps before the big ones. Make sure and ask an instructor to guide you through the machines again if you are not sure how some work. You don't want to injure yourself due to improper lifting. It is also good to stretch before you work out as well, and a short walk to warm up. No question is a dumb question."

I think you guys were right saying that was my body's way of telling me I needed a break b/c after my day of rest I hit the gym with unbound energy...well okay maybe not that much but I definitely head more stamina and brighter outlook. I feel so much better after a good hour and 45 mins. at the gym. I'm also trying to get outside and into the sunshine more. It really helps my mood and motivates me. Again thank you all so much you're totally awesome and wonderful!!!! :D"

Most people would have been like, "Aw screw it, I'm having a crappy day, I don't want to go to the gym...I'm tired!" Besides, you can squeeze in a pretty darn good workout in 30 minutes. The key is intensity...30 minutes at higher intensity will be as effective as 45-50 minutes at low intensity (depending on what you're doing, of course).[/QUOTE] I agree......"

Holly said: "All good thoughts. I just wanted to add that if you've been going to the gym everyday, perhaps you needed a day off? Maybe you're body was telling you to take it easy. I think we all agree that six days of regular exercise should be followed by somehting lighter. Maybe doing a yoga tape at home or if it falls on weekend, planning to do something fun outside (or frankly, my feet are pretty tired after a full day at the mall ;) )."

I only did 10 mins on the bike last night as i was too tired to do anything else, but like you-i did it rather than NOT doing it!! The gym isnt for everyone, maybe try some swimming on days you feel too tired to work out-give yourself a variety and it wont seem quite so boring. I do my yoga dvd on days when im tired too as stretching and toning is important too, :)"

I have to say I am very proud of you (even though we don't know each other :D ) You have an awful lot on your plate right now, when most 20 yr. olds can't even handle a quiz in class and get all spazed out and can't remember their name! Give yourself credit. Yes, your bumded b/c you only stayed 30 min. at the gym but you know what, you went you, worked out and your smart enough to know when your body needs a rest and says STOP I HAVE HAD IT FOR TODAY. Seriously, there is always tomorrow and it's not like your sitting in fron of the t.v. with a bag of potatoe chips in hand complaining. You are doing something, you are moiving and you seem very resposible and seem to have a good head on your shoulders to know your limits.
