Heather said: "Welcome to Featherish, Betsy! It's nice to have you here. Lots of great advice here already. Fruits and vegetables are your friends.. they have lots of nutrients are pretty low in calories for the most part. Steamed or stir fried vegetables over rice is always a filling meal."

spectrachic311 said: "Hi Betsy! I just want to say welcome to Featherish and I hope we can help you meet your goals. I would say first off...how did you get to your "goal weight" of 100 lbs? Do you think that's a realistic weight for you or would you have to struggle a lot to maintain a weigh that low? I say this because right now, I'm at about 100 lbs and I'm only an inch taller than you. And I'm pretty skinny looking....I'm also not getting my period and my doctor is trying to help me GAIN weight. My ideal weight is closer to 110. Maybe you should set a goal weight of 115 or so at first and if you get to that point and still feel that you could lose a bit more, you can tweak it a little. Remember, you're still growing so you shouldn't cut too many calories yet. I think you probably aren't eating enough calories, which could backfire on you. I went through a phase where I was barely eating and what happened was this: I felt so deprived that I started eating everything in sight and I gained back about 20 lbs. Now, I don't really count calories or anything, I just focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods and working out. I run a lot, which is part of why I can't seem to keep on weight. Diamond's right though...where are the fruits and veggies? You should be getting about 8 or 9 servings of them a day! I usually eat about 6 servings of veggies a day and at least 2 fruit. The oatmeal is a good breakfast choice though. Also, you should probably try to get some more dairy in...looks like you only got one serving. You need to shoot for 2 or 3 servings a day so your skeleton gets enough calcium. I try to eat 2 servings of dairy a day, plus I take a calcium supplement and I eat a lot of spinach and dark leafy greens that have calcium in them as well. Hope that helps you a little. Besides the jumping rope, are you planning on doing any other exercise? Do you belong to any sports teams?"

spectrachic311 said: "Yes, definitely try to be realistic about a goal weight. Right now, I have to try and gain weight because my doctor is sort of concerned. She tells me that I'm not necessarily too underweight, but that because I have a lot of muscle mass, I'm "underfat". I'm on calcium supplements right now, but my estrogen levels are a bit on the low side. I really feel for you if you hate veggies. I think they are your best friend when you are trying to watch what you eat without starving, lol. I found out that when I was hungry, I could snack on celery sticks and baby carrots and I wouldn't be so hungry anymore. I also started drinking water between meals instead of snacking...I used to be so bad about mindless snacking. I once had a history paper to write and I was so stressed about it that I wound up eating an entire box of Goldfish crackers while I wrote it. Another time in college, I had a big term paper to do and I ate a whole box of Chips Ahoy cookies while doing it. Once I learned to only eat at mealtimes and not snack on crap when I was just bored or stressed, I actually stopped craving the junk. What you can maybe do to get yourself to like more fruits and veggies is to try them prepared a couple of different ways. Sometimes you have to try things a few times before you like them. I thought I hated zucchini until I tried them just barely steamed with a little lemon juice on them. Then I loved them!"

spectrachic311 said: "Just thought I'd take a peek at your progress...looks pretty good so far. Your diet looks a little on the unbalanced side: not enough fruits and veggies. The oatmeal, grilled chicken, lowfat milk and tilapia are all good things to keep in your diet. I would lose the breaded chicken (that adds unnecessary calories) and maybe add in some fruits and veggies? Oh, and try to avoid ketchup if you can. It's full of high fructose corn syrup and sugar and it's not that great for you. As far as your workout routine, looks pretty good to me. Are you doing any weight lifting or just doing cardio? Since your not that overweight, you should do strength training so you'll get a nicer body shape. Just doing cardio will make you lose fat, which is fine, but if you really want muscle definition and form, you need to do some strength training. Don't worry about getting "bulky" or anything...you're a girl, so you don't have enough testosterone to really build much muscle mass. You can get kickass biceps though...check out mine in my avatar. I have a lot of definition, but they aren't huge or anything. Good luck!"

spectrachic311 said: "As far as veggies go, you really can't overdo them. Go for about 5 servings a day (more if you can). I don't count my veggie servings because they are so low calorie, it's hard to overdo them. With fruit, you have to be a little more careful...it has more sugar in it, so I try to limit myself to 2 servings a day, sometimes 3. Just be sure your veggies are prepared with no butter/oil/fat and your fruit isn't prepared with extra sugar. As far as how many reps I do...I usually do about 3 sets of 8-10 reps of bicep curls, bench presses, and overhead presses. I use weights that I can lift comfortably for only 8-10 reps (anything lighter than that is pretty useless). So usually for me, it's curls with a 15 lb dumbbell, presses with two 15 lb weights, and bench presses with a 60 lb barbell."

spectrachic311 said: "Ah yes, elliptical machines are awesome! They really do give you a good workout! Just curious, are the ellipticals you use the Precor ones? I love those. I wish I had one, but mine is just a generic Walmart one that is stuck at the highest level (so it really DOES kick my butt when I use it, lol). Sounds like you're doing ok with your eating. Just try to sneak in fruits and veggies when you can, especially when you're exercising. The antioxidants in the fruits and veggies will help you to keep your stamina up and help your body repair itself faster. I also remember being in high school and thinking that my friends were so lucky because they could eat whatever they wanted. Truth was, I just ate a lot more than they did and I NEVER worked out. I walked a block to school and back each day...that was all the exercise I ever got. I remember being in PE class and having to run 3/4 mile for fitness testing. I was gasping and panting about halfway through and had to walk the rest of it...I finished last, of course and the teacher made fun of me. Well, I went back to my high school for my little brother's graduation 5 years after I graduated and I saw my old gym teacher. He couldn't believe how good of shape I was in! It was kind of nice to be able to flaunt that :)"

spectrachic311 said: "Hi Betsy, Ooh, tempura! That's one of the things at a Japanese restaurant that you're NOT supposed to eat, lol. But I guess if you only ate a little of it, that's not so bad. You're still a little skimpy on veggies...have you tried maybe drinking a V8 juice or something like that? One of those is 2 or 3 servings of veggies, I think. Also, as far as the ellipticals go...the Precor ones will say "Precor" on them and they DON'T have moving arms. In reality, you don't need the arms to move. You burn the same amount of calories either way. Also, the Precor ones have adjustable resistance AND incline, so you can vary your workout more. They are UBER expensive though...I'd buy one for myself if they didn't cost $3000+. I used to sell them and part of my job was to use the machines so I could show other people how to use them...I got SO spoiled!! Now I kind of hate my own elliptical...it's pretty ghetto."

spectrachic311 said: "LOL, yeah, tempura's kind of one of those "special treat" foods that you should only eat sometimes. There's this Japanese restaurant in Madison that I go to sometimes and I was in line behind this HUGE guy. He ordered tempura and the chef said "That's deep-fried, you sure you want that?" and the guy said "YES, I'm sure I want that! Now give me my food!" I almost started laughing because the guy was so angry :) You can still enjoy Japanese food though...order sushi (I usually get ahi tuna) or an order of steamed mixed vegetables and ask for only half an order of rice. Or even better: Order the steamed mixed vegetables and no rice. Then make your own brown rice at home and eat that with the veggies. If you're going to eat rice, brown rice is a MUCH better option than white because it has more fiber and nutrients."

DBrew said: "Hi Betsey, Brittany has some good advice for you. It may not seem important to you at this point to have good nutrition, but it is very important. You will thank yourself when you are my age if you take care of yourself now. You will have better skin, posture, age less than your peers, and feel energized. You should definately see to it that you get enough vitamins, minerals and protein."

DBrew said: "When a woman gets too thin, the mechanisms that control hormones necessary for a period go on hiatus. It happens to anorexics and athletic woman. It is not healthy and I would not go for it. I was anorexic in high school and it happened to me. When it did, the docs were very concerned."

DBrew said: "Betsey, fruits might be better than veggies for snacking right now. At least they have the sweetness factor. I love cooked veggies but raw things are just not very tantilizing to me unless they are on samis or tacos, etc.... I like eating apples, bananas, berries, and nuts with yogurt and things like that for snacks. When you add a a small amont of fat like a tsp. of pb plus a little yogurt to some berries, it makes for a fun and satisfying and low fat snack. That is what I would choose. I am not big on the celery and carrot sticks. They taste like nothing to me."

DBrew said: "You rfood sounds pretty healthy!!!!!"

naynay said: "Hmm wish your mom would say things in a different way, she prob just cares but that would hurt me to....you dont have that much weight to lose I would just try to think that she cares and try your best not to let her bother you welcome:)"

Diamond said: "Hiya Betsy! Pardon me for being nosey, but where are the veggies? Perhaps you aren't eating enough in a day and that might be hurting you in the long run?"

Diamond said: "Hi Betsy. I wouldn't so far as to call that horrible. A glass of milk for dinner doesn't sound very filling, even if you ate some fried foods earlier in the day. As for not liking vegetables, have you tried something like a veggie stir fry over rice? You could use broccoli, snap peas, carrots, water chestnuts, onions etc. Believe me when I say that they aren't that bad! Especially if you use your imagination to cook them creatively."

Diamond said: "The best thing is just to stay consistent. Exercise and being mindful of what you eat and I'm sure you'll do fine, Betsy."

Also, it would be nice to go shopping and find clothes that actually fit you and you wouldn't have to be teased at school for being "a little rounder" than the other girls. :sad010:
Do you have a large or small frame? 100 pounds is pretty light, so unless you have a small frame you should probably aim for a heavier weight like 110. I'm going for about 100-105 because I personally have quite a small frame. This is what I used to figure that out: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/imagepages/17182.htm
I'm a big junk food lover (aka fries, burgers, pizza, and FRIED foods) and I wanna get rid of that but my cravings just really take over and I'd usually give in. problem of mine.
Ha, sounds like me a couple months ago. I think all teenagers at least start like that. I’ve forced myself to eat healthy foods for so long I actually crave them now, LOL. As far as the treadmill, if you mean 7.9 miles per hour and you did that for 45 minutes, I’m REALLY jealous of you. Don’t worry about screw-ups, they happen. I’ve screwed up, and as long as you’re on a diet where you are losing the weight slowly as opposed to 20 second diet things, you won’t gain it back (at least this has been MY experience)."

betsylulu said: "Hi everyone!! I’m new here,I’ve visited the Featherish forums a couple of times and I finally decided to join (I signed-up just recently). I’m really excited to be here because I know how everyone here is so friendly and helpful :D. Before I move on, I’d like to say a little something about myself: I’m a 16 year old girl, 5’2, I weigh 125 pounds and here are some of my goals (at the moment): To lose 25 pounds, to get myself ready for prom and graduation (!!!!), to be (and eat) healthy, to tone my upper and lower body, and to get rid of my emotional eating habits. I always say I'll start eating right tomorrow but it never happens but this is it!! and I'm feeling pretty nervous for some reason :whacky011:. Any sort of output would be much appreciated! betsy "

betsylulu said: "I'll take this opportunity to make my first "official" entry to my journal: September 6,2007 Breakfast: Oatmeal (about 1/2 cup cooked) with 3 tsp. brown sugar and 1/2 cup low-fat milk Lunch: 1 cup rice with 1/2 cup fish and 2 pieces chicken (the chicken wasn't fried and each was the size of my fist and I didn't eat the skin) Dinner: A glass of low-fat milk, since I wasn't too hungry Water intake: About 5 glasses As for my exercise, I'll be doing 30 minutes of the jump rope since I didn't get to go to the gym. I'm really exhausted from school work since we're having our finals this week and I haven't been getting enough sleep. :("

betsylulu said: "Hello everyone! Thanks for welcoming me. That's one problem, I hate veggies! Whenever I have sandwiches with veggies in it I take them out :(. I know that sounds horrible but I'm not a veggie person. But I can really start eating it since I have to.The only veggies I can tolerate is lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes. I've always wanted to try more but worried about what to try because I'm not familiar with good veggies. Truth is, I'm not completely sure as to how I should eating and I know that timing my meals is a big thing. I'd love to lessen my bad carbs though and eat more fruits and veggies. 115 seems like a more ideal weight at the moment. I think it'll be easier for me if I made that my goal as for now (thanks spectra! wow, what made your period stop?!?). I just hate it when I get so hungry and end up pigging out. And yeah, I'm not a fan of calorie counting. It ruins the whole point of enjoying food. I'd really love to eat healthy and the way you eat sounds like such a great way to eat. I'm a big junk food lover (aka fries, burgers, pizza, and FRIED foods) and I wanna get rid of that but my cravings just really take over and I'd usually give in. But I really wanna start eating healthier now. It would be great if anyone could help me map out my eating plan (I don't wanna call it a diet, otherwise it would feel like it would last for only a short time) @DBrew, One other problem of mine is me losing energy. I have a feeling that whenever I get tired, it's because I've got bad eating habits and fried foods are definitely bad for me. I'm not sure which foods could up my energy levels though. I know that if I eat healthier, I'll feel better inside and out :). I recently signed-up at a gym and I would do 45 minutes of the treadmill and 15 minutes of the stationary bike. I used to play tennis but I haven't done that in a while. I'm planning to do it this Sunday though. I'd like to do 6 days at the gym and 1 day for tennis. How long should I run because I've got curves and my hips and butt have always been a problem of mine."

betsylulu said: "September 7,2007 Breakfast: Oatmeal (about 1/2 cup cooked) with 3 tsp. brown sugar and 1/2 cup low-fat milk Lunch: 1 cup of yakimeshi (Japanese fried rice with veggies and a little meat, so good!!! Too bad it's not healthy. Gack.) with 3 pcs. Ebi tempura and 2pcs Gyoza. Dinner: 1 glass of low-fat milk Water intake: 8 glasses Ugh, I did horribly today. I feel so ashamed :sad010:. I guess I was too hungry, and it was the final days of exams so it was sort of a celebration? I hope I can get through this. As for my exercise, I'm on my way to the gym to do 45 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes on the stationary bike. By the way, my speed on the treadmill is 7.9. Is that any good or am I too slow?"

betsylulu said: "Oh, no! I messed up again! Here's what I had today: Breakfast: Oatmeal with 2 tsp. brown sugar and 1/2 cup low-fat. Lunch: 1 cup of rice with 2 sticks of barbeque Dinner: 3 slices of banana bread and a glass of ice cream!!! I can't believe it! I started to get really hungry at 6 pm and had a craving. Ugh, I feel terrible :sad010: . I hate how my cravings control me. Another sad thing is that I had a pretty good workout today. One hour on the treadmill and 10 minutes on the bike. @Diamond, Wow, that sounds really good! I'm going to try that out. It's true how creativity is key when eating healthy. Everyday I tell myself I wanna eat healthy but then we don't have enough veggies at home. I can eat a salad with chicken though. It's something I can tolerate. But I can't deny the fact that home cooking is the best. When I worked out today, I wasn't hungry until I got home and smelled freshly cooked food. Rice is a staple in my family and that's something I wanna lessen. I just can't resist home cooked food :(."

betsylulu said: "Hello everyone! Sorry for the delay in posting since I didn't have access to the internet for the past couple of days. September 12,2007 Breakfast: Oatmeal with 2 tsp. brown sugar and 1/2 cup low-fat milk Lunch: Jamaican Patty again Dinner: 1 cup of rice with fish and chicken, and 1 glass of low-fat milk I got to do 45 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes on the bike."

betsylulu said: "Wow, I appreciate all the great advice and warm welcome! Hello Heather :D. @YK, Well, I my lower body may come off as pretty heavy (in my opinion) but my frame's pretty small. I think eating healthy just takes a lot of getting used to which is why I better start as soon as possible! It's more like 7.9 km/h :P. At least that's what it says on the treadmill. I've been screwing up A LOT lately which freaks me out. It gets me worried. @DBrew, I'm not a fan of raw things either which is why I don't turn to veggies (specially salads) as often as I'd want to. Those sound like very delicious and healthy suggestions for snacks! I'm definitely going to try those. :D @spectrachic, How you were college sounds a lot like me now. I eat whenever I'm bored or stressed and it's horrible because I don't feel like I have any self-control and I have no idea as to how to get over it. I'm definitely going to try to eat more veggies and have them in different ways just so I don't get bored. Good luck on getting your period back to a normal cycle :). I appreciate all your comments and suggestions! :D"

You really think so? Because my mum doesn't. :( She thinks the Jamaican Patty is unhealthy. May I be allowed to rant since I am after all writing in my "journal"? Well, I get really upset whenever my mum keeps mentioning stuff about my diet. She keeps saying "are you sure you wanna eat that?" or "I'm going to measure what you eat." I can tell she really wants me to lose weight which hurts because she doesn't even eat that healthy (I mean, she's the one who eats sweets more often than she should) and she's tall and slim (she looks like a former beauty queen or model) which puts my self-esteem way down and I feel so insecure about myself because I'm scared about what people say when they compare me to my mum. The reason why I'm trying to eat better is because I want to do it for myself and not because someone pressures me into becoming what they want me to be or do. Besides, I don't think it's always a good idea to take advice from someone who doesn't eat right. It becomes difficult when she expects me to eat right and she doesn't."

betsylulu said: "Hi nayay , Oh I know my mum really cares but it'd be better if she was more sensitive in a way that she'd be less offensive with her words. Oh well. :) Here's the scoop on today's food intake: September 15,2007 Breakfast: Oatmeal with 2 tsp. brown sugar and 1/2 cup low-fat milk Lunch: Salad (lettuce, tomatoes and grapes) with a 2 tbsp. vinaigrette 2 pieces of grilled chicken breast (each are as big as my fist) I didn't finish the salad though since I wasn't too hungry. Dinner: Tilapia and 2 pieces of chicken (same as lunch) with ketchup :D I got to go to the gym today and did 1 hour on the treadmill which made me feel pretty good."

betsylulu said: "Hello all, So, it’s been a while since I posted something. The good thing is, I’ve been eating the same thing for the past 4 days so it’s not that hard to remember :P. September 17-20, 2007 Breakfast: Oatmeal with 2tsp. brown sugar and 1/2 cup low-fat milk. Lunch: Grilled chicken breast fillet with ketchup (about 3Tbsp.) Dinner: Breaded/grilled chicken breast with tilapia; After a few hours I'll have 1 glass of low-fat milk. As far as my exercise goes, I've gone to the gym twice this week (doing 45-60 minutes on the treadmill) or i do the jump rope (for 30 minutes (100 jumps per minute)) on the days that I didn't go to the gym. This is the first time I was able to go 4 days without having something sweet or giving in to my cravings and I'm so thrilled!!! YAY! I hope I can keep this up. Please comment on how I've been doing lately :)."

betsylulu said: "I'm glad you reminded me about the content of ketchup. I just have it to add taste to the grilled chicken. Maybe I should add garlic or spices instead? I'll definitely cut out the breaded chicken and add more fruits and veggies. How much veggies should I be eating everyday? That's one thing I'm not sure of. I was trying to lessen my carb intake which is why I only had Oatmeal as my source of carbs. How much is one serving? I usually focus on doing cardio when I go to the gym but I will get into weight/strength training probably this week. How many times a week should I do it? Since I'm heavier in my lower body, I'll focus on my legs, butt, and quads. Wow, your arms ARE kickass!! How many reps do you do? Do you watch your veggie intake?"

betsylulu said: "Here's what I had for September 24,2007 Breakfast: Oatmeal Lunch: Grilled Chicken breast (I forgot to bring some veggies to school!) Dinner: Fish sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes on Oatmeal bun Since I didn't have a ride to the gym, I did 30 minutes of the jump rope, 3 sets of 12 for lunges (I used 5 pound weight) and squats, bicep curls 12 reps 3 sets, curl and kick back 3 sets 10 reps. I used 5 pound weights for both arm exercises. Now my legs and arms are starting to hurt. I'm dying to lose the weight :(. I know I'm being impatient but I can't help it."

betsylulu said: "Today's (September 26,2007) food intake wasn't so bad I suppose but I'm still lacking a lot of veggies. I had the same (Oatmeal) for breakfast, for lunch I had grilled chicken breast, and for dinner I had 1 cup of rice with salisbury steak and carrots and corn. Exercise wasn't so bad as I got to do 30 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes on the elliptical machine (that machine is a monster!!! You really feel all the work in your legs. I find it to be a mix of cycling and running) and later on I'll be doing weights, squats, and lunges. My legs and arms still hurt."

betsylulu said: "Ooops! So sorry, I guessed I overlooked that one. I've changed it already. Thanks :D."

betsylulu said: "Hi Diamond , I try to stay consistent but it's hard trying to eat healthy at 16 years old. I mean, you see your friends eating whatever they want and you start to wonder, "Where does it all go?" They're not super skinny but they don't even have to try so hard to maintain their weight. September 30 I didn't have time to eat breakfast since I woke up late and I had to go to the gym right away so for lunch I had rice and chicken and a little bit of veggies. Then for dinner I had chicken breast and milk. I got to to 45 minutes on the treadmill and 15 on the elliptical machine. I started doing the ellitical machine this week and it's crazy! Since I do 15 minutes of it, I'd usually stop every five minutes to catch my breath but today I went for 10 minutes! Maybe I can do 15 minutes without stopping next time? I won't be able to access the computer (or the gym!!!) for about 3 days because of school activities so I won't be anywhere near home. Hopefully, I'll be able to control my eating habits. Wish me luck!!"

betsylulu said: "Things have been going well for the past two days (sugar craving-wise). I haven't had sweets since Thursday so I hope that I can keep it up. For Thursday I only got to do the jump rope since I couldn't go to the gym and I had Oatmeal for breakfast and a cup of fried rice and tempura for dinner (I know, it sounds awful!). I didn't get to eat lunch since I accidentally left my money at home. As for Friday (yesterday) I had Oatmeal for breakfast, a jamaican patty for lunch, and chicken and fish for dinner. I went through my excercise routine (45 minutes on the treadmill and 15 on the elliptical machine) yesterday since I got to go to the gym. I know I haven't been eating well but I'm trying my best. It's just so hard when I get tired from school and all. @spectra, How do you know if it's a precor one? Is that the one with the hands involved? I think I just AM eating more than my friends do. I doubt they go overboard and eat so much the way I do (specially when no one is looking). They eat whatever they want but in moderation I guess. Wow, you sure showed that teacher of yours! You ARE a lean, mean, running MACHINE!!"

betsylulu said: "Oh no! :dazed052: Tempura's the thing I ALWAYS have when I go to a Japanese Restaurant. It's one of my favorite foods! *phew* I'm glad you told me about it though, I'll be more careful about my portions if and when I do eat Tempura. Here's what I've had for the past two days: Oatmeal for breakfast, 1 cup rice with chicken (october 8) and a jamaican patty (october 9) for lunch, and half of the tilapia with 2 pieces of chicken breast and milk for dinner. I got to go to the gym on both days which makes me happy since I'm not always consistent with my gym visits :)."

betsylulu said: "I was always pretty hesitant to try brown rice because of its color. I get pretty grossed out (for some strange reason; maybe it's because I know it's not fried rice) but I'm aware about how healthy it is which is great! I'll definitely try your suggestions spectra. Sounds soooo good! Today wasn't so bad. I had Oatmeal for breakfast, a salad with chicken bits for lunch and some tangy dressing, and half a tilapia and chicken breast and milk for dinner. I'm gong to jump rope later and do some lunges and squats. I'm a little worried about my food intake. Hopefully, it isn't so bad."

betsylulu said: "Ughh. I had such a bad day yesterday. Everything was going so well until dinner time because I was so stressed about having to beat the deadline. At around 7 to 7:30, after having a bowl of fruits and milk for dinner, I had this HUGE craving for bread! So I ended up eating 2 rolls and 1 slice of wheat bread!! I hate it. I excerised really well earlier that day and all my hardwork just went down the drain."

I excerised really well earlier that day and all my hardwork just went down the drain."
