Happiness....

cvalh said: "lilphish, I sort of disagree. I think happiness CAN be a choice. Some people have all the makings of a happy life, but choose to be unsatisfied (I'm not referring to people with chemical deficiencies, some people really do make this choice). Of course, Stroutman, you have to define something here... What is the difference between happiness and satisfaction? What IS happiness? This question is very loaded... I think there are moments of "fleeting" happiness in everyone's life, when you just feel uplifted and carefree, but that doesn't mean you're a happy person. I guess I think there are two types of happiness. One is a temporary "feeling," and another is a state of being. You can also be a happy person experiencing a moment of sadness... AHHH! Feelings are complicated. (Sigh - you guys bring up interesting things. I can't keep quiet even when I want to)."

I think there are people that are just born happy and others that are not. I am one who falls in the middle. Some days, I am *****y and others I am extremely happy. What makes me happy? A sunny day sure does. Being healthy. Having a good job. My parents, my boyfriend and friends all make me happy. Shopping and buying new things make me happy too! Retail therapy is the best! LOL.
So what about this? Does perception create happiness? Don't we always have a choice?"

For instance, suppose you wake up, the sun's shining, it's a Saturday morning, your significant other is making you breakfast, birds are chirping, your boss calls and doubles your salary, and you win 250 bucks on a scratch off lottery card. If you aren't happy that day, somethings wrong with you. Happiness forces itself into your mind. The state of happiness, a more permanent way of being, I think is established through actually putting effort into controlling your thoughts and therefore your perceptions. Some people are certainly naturally happier than others due to multiple reasons. But on average, I think happiness is something you have to work at. Too many people let their minds run on auto-pilot. Negativity is going to infect all of us at some point. And from my experience, when you let your mind run on auto-pilot, even slight negativities have a cancerous effect on one's emotional state. Again, only my opinions, but certainly an interesting topic of convo."

A good example of choosing to be happy would be my mother right new. 4 years ago she lost both her breasts to cancer, it returned big time last year and is in many of her bones but she is so happy and optomistic. SHe tries everyday to figure out her healing and reads inspirational books all the time. SHe has taught me so much about life through her illness. She goes to chicago every month for treatments and she is planning to never give up. When you have children this is very important to teach them. I try to show them that life is hard work but do everything with a smile. That, and I am one of those naturally good natured people, like my mom.
It certainly shines through you Denise."

One should be glad they ran at all and didn't stay home on the couch/pig out or whatever a person would be doing before they started working out ( real life story! :) )
I wholeheartedly agree. :)"

Kat_the_Amazon said: "Happiness can definitely be both. For me, happiness was a choice when i was younger. I was going through a lot of stuff in my teenage years (as has everyone) and instead of trying to get over it, i allowed it to consume my life. I could have been happy if i chose therapy and chose to work through it. The only happines that i got from my horse. The feeling that i got from him was not a choice, but going to see him was a choice. He made me happy. The happiest was when we were galloping in cross-country jumping everything. That's fun stuff. Of course now that i am older (smarter), i chose to work through it and chose happiness. I am happy and choose to surround myself with stuff that makes me happy. I think happiness is a choice and a feeling because some things you can't help but feel happy about. :D"

BestinTess said: "Happiness is a funny thing....I personally spent a lot of time seeking it and not finding it and thus making myself more unhappy. But then it occurred to me that it wasn't worth the unhappiness I was feeling to seek this happiness...so I settled for contentedness....and soon I was happy! Thereupon, I started a journey to enrich my life. To make the content of a higher value...to make the happiness I was deriving more valuable, in my opinion. And so far it has worked. In my life, I have very few things to truly complain about. I can complain with the best of them. But I have done enough cognitive therapy to know that it's alllllllll about perspective. And for the most part, I have a very good perspective. (Cept of course, when it comes to getting my lazy butt out of bed to work out in the morning)"
