Stressed Moms Can Cause Restless BabiesStressed Moms Can Cause Restless Babies
DBrew said: "I do not think there is much merit to this. People can do all kinds of crazy studies, which do interest me, but something like this would be hard to prove. i think pregnancy is stressful for the most part. I felt emotionally horrible with my first son while pregnant, but he slept really good through the night. He was bottle fed and I think that was why. Then, I was very calm my 2nd pregnany, and it took about 16 months for hime to sleep through the night. He was breastfed and I attribute the sleeping problems to that. Even those are just my guesses. With babies, we never know.
My sister told me that if I was stressed during pregnancy, my children might turn out to be gay according to some study she read. I do not know how the scientists cam up with that!:whacky044:"
DBrew said: "yeah, Diamond, I am sure we did not even need a study to tel us that stress is bad for kids. it is bad for anyone.
When she told me, i acted like the study might have merit as to not insult her, but I did think that it was funny. i do not think I would care if my child was gay anyhow."
DBrew said: "Yeah, I do not see any gayness in their future, but some of the best people I have ever met were gay, so it would not be a problem. No matter what, my child's sexuality is not what I want to have on the brain-period.
Tess, I am glad you got fortunate enough to have a laid back kid. SHe must help you put things into perspective sometimes. Cool kids are, well, cool!:)"
Diamond said: "MSNBC featured a story that claims that moms that are stressed out during pregnancy might have babies that are restless or have other behavioral problems later inlife.
The results are based on a survey of more than 14,000 British women who answered questions about anxiety and depression symptoms during and after pregnancy. They were also surveyed about their children’s sleep habits at ages 6 months, 18 months and 30 months.
In general, mothers with greater symptoms during pregnancy reported more sleep problems with their children — such as frequent nighttime awakenings, difficulty falling asleep and, with older children, regularly refusing to go to bed.
What do you guys think? Do you think that there are any associations?

I doubt that a kid is going to turn gay because of stress, but that had to at least give you a laugh.
I don't believe every study I read, but I'm sure stress (both before and after a baby is born) has to have some effect on the child. Kids that are brought up in a
house with a lot of arguing have to have issues, I'm sure."

Not only are you a good mom, you're an understanding one, too. A lot of parents might disown their kids if they found out that they preferred an alternative lifestyle to the ordinary run of the mill relationship. Somehow I doubt that is something you'll have to worry about, anyhow!"

I was working, and going to school for my first masters AND working on what was then just a wreck of a house, AND hubby was overseas for most of the pregnancy. That baby just NEVER slept for more than two hours in a row 'til he was at least a year old. The rest of my pregnancies, life was calmer, and those babies slept fine. However, I think it's just as likely that a baby picks up on a stressed mother and reacts to her mood. I'm sure the moms in the study were STILL stressed after the baby was born too. It may have nothing to do with the moms's mood DURING the pregnancy."
BestinTess said: "I had an extremely stressful pregnancy which was filled with drama (I won't go into detail, but I'll say that the day before I was to be induced, my ex got me served to try to keep me within 150 miles of him!!! He stalked me...it was horrible!!). I worked 20 hrs/wk and went to school full time. I also did volunteer work (to keep myself around people at all times because of the aforementioned stalking thing) and my daughter has got to be about the most laid back kid ever! She's so cool like that...I'm jealous!
Maybe there is merit to the study, but every person handles their stress differently so I'm sure that for women who handle their stress in some ways might effect the baby...while other women might handle their stress in other ways that might not effect the pregnancy. Who knows..."
