Allowing kids to have bottles in their mouth all the time is one of the reasons this is happening to little ones. I couldn't imagine letting a kid wreck their teeth before they are old enough to even eat!"
Heather said: "I wonder it parents do this just so their baby won't cry without knowing how bad it can be for them?"

My mom swore it worked like a charm, but she told me that strategy would probably never fly today because everyone would be so against it. One of my friends is Italian and her grandma was from Sicily...when she was a baby, her grandma used to put a little wine into a bottle of water to give her when she was cranky and it always made her sleepy. She still blames her grandma for her taste for red wine to this day, lol.
I've always been curious about how it feels to nurse...I've always heard it is a good experience. In El Salvador, one of the villages I went to had a woman that nursed other women's babies for them while they went to work. The other women would pay her with meals and a little money and she loved her job. So if you ladies want to nurse again...there could be a job lined up for ya! That is, if you're ready to have another kid, lol."

She gave them bottles with juice and SODA (!!) once they were about 8 or 9 months old. Plus, most of her kids had malformed teeth due to being malnourished when she was pregnant (she is anorexic/bulimic and it really messed up her kids' health). One of her boys had to have his first pair of incisors filled about a month after they grew in because they were already rotten. I can not believe how irresponsible some parents are. It literally makes me ill to think that people would give their children soda and juice and stuff like that when they are so young. It's like they're handing their kid a sugar addiction on a silver platter. I think the only time I ever used a bottle was when I was being weaned off breast milk...my mom filled the bottle with water or regular milk for me to drink occasionally when I wanted to nurse. But she was tough with the bottles though...none of us were allowed to use one after our first birthday. That was also when the "nuk" got taken away, too. And all of us have great teeth, imagine that. ;)"

DBrew said: "Yeah, breast feeding someone else's baby would be weird. I think that used to be done alot in medievel times. Alot of women might not have been able to do it -just like today. It is a hard thing to do. Especially at first. It is nice they had that option."
DBrew said: "Well I did not succeed with my first child, so I know how disappointing not doing it as long as you planned can be. Then, sopme people make you feel like a loser if you do not do it and that I did not appreciate. You nursed Mason for a long time though. I am sure he got many benefits from it.
In some ways, I am happy, too. I do not have to worry about engorgement or leaky marks on my shirts. I also can wear what I want and do not have to think about how it will affect my nursing comfort. I do not have to stop whatever I am doing to breasfeed or pump my breasts morning noon and night. It is the bonding and closeness that is missed. It is also sad because it is one step closer to them being independant and able to make their own choices. You did really good Nay Nay. You were faced with so much tough circumstance this year, it is amazing how you kept you cool."
DBrew said: "I always worry about that. I never gave my kids soda-period- and never will. they do eat alot of chocolate and do not always brush their teeth. My first one was totally addicted to bottles and drank one until he was 3 or 4. I would not ever let that happen again!
I breastfed #2 and he never really wanted bottles or pacis.
My first son had a tiny cavity when he was 5, so I can not really talk."
DBrew said: "Maybe,Heather. I had such a horrible and sleepless year and a half breast feeding. I thought I would never get any rest. Maybe some parents just say enough is enough!"
DBrew said: "I guess I worded that wrong. I loved breast feeding. My son is two now and he just completely quit about a month ago so I let him be the judge of when top stop.
What drove me crazy was that the whole time, he woke up 1-6 times a night and stayed up for hours sometimes. I got so little sleep for about 15 months straight! It makes me appreciate so much every night that I get a good rest now.
Yes, it is very sad to wean children. I feel sad about it even now, but at least we nursed for 24 months. That is pretty good in my book.
The last couple of days, he has been asking for mommy's milk and I feel so bad I can not give him any. It makes me so sad inside."
DBrew said: "The hardest thing for me about being a medical professional would be dealing with deaths and unfortunate outcomes on a daily basis. Telling people they had incurable disease would be traumatic for me. I like to spread cheer so I could not do it either. The blood would probably not bother me, though."
DBrew said: "I think it is great that option is being reexplored. if I were a mom, I would just worry about the content of the other mother's milk."

with my baby there was a few times where i was giving him a bottle and when i took it away bc he fell asleep he would cry and not stop..i think he got used to falling asleep while nursing but i have realized that i was doing it and have stoped...now that in the last 2 weeks he has held his bottle by himself, i will give him one and he will be drinking it and fall asleep...he just did it tonight..i gave him one and went into the kitchen to get lillie a drink and when i came back he was sleeping...so i am glad for this post bc i need to not let him do it....i know how bad it is that is why i didn't let lillie do it...he doesn't take a "binki""

Another score for breastfeeding!"

I think that if child services caught wind of that today there would be hell to pay!"

lakelady said: "This is one of the other advantages of breastfeeding! My kids were so spoiled they wouldn't even deign to put a fake bottle in their mouth. None of them ever used pacifiers either. I don't have anything against them, I just never got into the habit.
I too know of kids whose moms have propped a bottle on a pillow in the crib, that have ended up having their teeth rot out before they even had them all. I always just want to say, "GOD! read a book, why dontcha" (but of course, I never do)
One of my pet peeves is seeing a 3 year old kid walking around a grocery store sucking on a baby bottle! Spec, your mom had the right idea. If you're old enought to hold a cup, you're too damn old for a baby bottle."

Oh Really Dbrew? It wasn't a good experience. That makes me sad for you. I was just the opposite. I cried every time I weaned a baby from the breast. It was WAY more upsetting for me than for them! Especially the girls! They pretty much weaned themselves. I've heard that from other nursing mothers of girls as well. I guess males are just way more interested in the female mammaries right from birth. ;)"

Oh! It's true! When my eldest (30 next week) was a baby, he NEVER slept and I was really hurting from sleep deprivation. (I saw a squirrel run right through my living room wall!:whacky044: ) I called my pediatrician and he TOLD me to have a few glasses of wine and nurse the baby. He said enough alcohol would get into my milk and we'd BOTH sleep better. He'd probably lose his license for that advice now!!!"

Actually, there are a lot of hospitals HERE where they have nursing mothers who have volunteered, nurse preemies to prepare them for surgery. They need the antibodies in mothers milk, but mostly they are too weak to nurse from a synthetc bottle, and the natural 'letdown' reflex of the breast makes it much easier for them to get nourishment, and they gain quicker. I never actually thought it would be strange to nurse someone elses baby but mahesh is right, I wouldn't want to do it for a living!"

Yeah, I've always wondered about that as well, but I'm certain the hospitals screen the volunteers carefully, and it's just until the natural mom's own lactation difficulties , whatever they are, are solved."
