Atkins

Heather said: "Hello Jessica Leann! It's nice to have you here. The Atkins diet is like most others diets. You eat the way they tell you to for as long as you can before you can't take it anymore. Its a way to lose some weight quickly but as soon as you return to eating normally it tends to come back. How much weight are you looking to lose?"

I have two slices of bread a day that are whole wheat and eat my cereal in the morning which is Organic Grains as well. I don't eat anything with white flour. And, my carbs are eaten before 12 Noon. It worked for me. The good thing is if I go to a BBQ, I eat a hot dog or hamburger without the bread. This is once in a while of course but it works to keep the weight off! If you can live without Pasta and Bread, than you can do this. Good luck!"

But I didn't lose weight that way, I used it for maintenance. I lost my weight on low fat, but who knows?, I may have lost it faster on low-carb, and for sure I would've gotten to eat more! The really good thing about it that I found, is after just a few days on it, all your cravings for the bad stuff just disappear. It's a real commitment though, it's not a way of eating you can cheat on for a day and then go back to. It takes DAYS to get your metabolic advantage of low carb back after you cheat!"

I'm sure it's like anything else and depends on a variety of factors. I have an acquaintnce who lost 11 pounds the first week! but she was VERY overweight. At the end she was losing around 3 pounds a week, if I remember correctly. She also had a daily workout routine. You don't have very much to lose so I imagine you can expect around two or three pounds a week."

After reading and comparing, and also doing my homework on what the body needs to function in a healthy way, I took from each one, bits and pieces of information that would be beneficial for me personally. I have found that the basic idea of Atkins is useful in the attempt to lose weight, however; I believe it goes to far to the extreme in taking carbs out of ones diet. I believe that is where the failure comes with using that diet lies. You will deny yourself for so long eating any kinds of carbs, that when you finally do start to add them to your diet, they over compensate, and will also start to eat the unhealthy carbs {anything with white flour and sugar} which will affect the bodies sugar levels, which can cause the body to have strong feelings of cravings. In reality, the body needs carbs for energy, and scientifically, it actually needs carbs to aid the process in burning fat. The healthy balance in what I walked away from with the Atkins diet was to eat only smaller amounts of the "HEALTHY" carbs. I stay away from white flour and white sugar. I also try to keep my carbs in my afternoon meal. I have experienced a significant amount of success with eating this way and weight loss. I also try to stick to healthy lean proteins. If I do find myself in a position, like at a barbecue or a party where there are a ton of unhealthy choices, I will choose to eat the protein that is offered just plain. Like a hotdog without the bun or a cheeseburger without the bun, topped with lots of tomatoes and sweet onion and a small side of light mayo or catsup to dip the meat in. That might sound unappetizing to some, but actually it taste quite good and is very satisfying. I think rotissere chicken is probably my favorite thing to eat. If I find that I am still hungry after that, I make a nice plate of fresh vegetables to dip in a light dill dip. I love small sweet cherry tomatoes, slices of green pepper, carrot sticks, and slices of cucumber. Eating ANY of those types of carbs has never stopped me from seeing my scale go down. And if I get a craving for any kind of bread, I will eat a slice of whole grain with a dab of real butter, or a wheat pita filled with grilled chicken pieces and a dab of lowfat Caesar dressing, topped with a tablespoon of shredded swiss cheese and tomatoes chunks. I guess to sum it up, most of the fad diets contain a good idea that one can use to incorporate into their own program. If you are interested in having a list of the healthy and unhealthy carbs, you can google it under the title "low glycemic" food list. Good luck in your weight loss![/B][/I][/COLOR]"

The first time I lost 35 lbs in 4 mo's, I was so excited, then I got pregnant. Oh well...after the birth of my son, I went back. As I was sitting in the waiting room, all the patients were telling each other how many times they had been there...I was shocked. Most of the group had been there 3+ times. They all gained the weight back and had to come back to lose it again. What a racket! Needless to say, I was less enthused about my 2nd visit. To sum it up, I think it's motivating in the beginning, but you do get burned out in a few weeks and it is HARD to maintain. Hope that helps!"
