Dangers of MSG

GreenEyes said: "Lakelady and DBrew, both of you are very beautiful! I'm Scandanavian :) I'm trying to get my nerve up to post pictures.....LOL I have always hated pictures of me, except when I was younger. Anyways, I wanted to add something to the MSG thing. I can't eat MSG at all. If I do, I swell up like a balloon, get a nasty headache and feel very thirsty for awhile. I have always heard that MSG was very bad for your body. It's very interesting that China consumes so much and doesn't have a rise in health problems. I might have to study up on it more."

DBrew said: "Do any of you science buffs have information on MSG? I always thought it was a cancer risk and assumed it would not be used in products anymore. I was wrong. I checked the labels of all the chips in my hous and it was in all of them. How dangerous do you think it is to consume this chemical on a regular basis. It appears as Monosodium Glutamate. I would appreciate any input."

DBrew said: "Thank you all for the input. You definately made me feel a little better about eating it. I think I will moderate it as mch as possible. Yeah that is me, Karen. When I saw your pic, I thought there was some resemblance for sure."

DBrew said: "Well, I am not a natural blonde. I have almost black hair. I am irish, Hungarian, and German as far as I know. When my hair was dark, people always thought I looked like someblyd they knew or had seen on TV. We will jussay you are my Featherish MAMA or twin sis!"

DBrew said: "Green eyes, we are all friends here and we all want to see each other! The only reason I have not posted until now is because I doid not know how. i had my hubby do it for me. That is a strange allergic reaction,Green Eyes. I think most foods can cause allergies to at least someone. I just read that link that Hdales posted and it does make me think twice about eating it. I do not even know why it is necessary. It really puzzles me that needless things are put into food for no apparent reason. I am sure the things would taste just as good either way. I definately do not need more hunger issues than I already have!"

DBrew said: "WOW. I would be really scared if I had a deadly allergy. Did you find out about the herring by trying it? If so, what was your experience? It is frightening feeding toddlers new foods. You never know if they might be allergic. I think I do remember 'accent. I never used it but I saw it in the store when I was little."

DBrew said: "OMG, that is a major scare. I guess we live in a world where the carrying of epi pens is commonplace. You were definately meant to survive if someone had one at that party! Thank goodness, 'caus we love having you here on this Earth with us! I did not realize people used Pickled Herring so much. It sounds gross!"

HDales said: "I would have to disagree and say that msg IS bad for you.. In excessive quantities. http://www.thefitshack.com/2007/04/12/exactly-why-is-msg-so-bad-for-my-body/ Just google msg and you will find tons of info."

lakelady said: "'brew, I was alive and well during the MSG controversy. As far as I remember it was never thought to be a carcinogen, but it WAS found to temporarily exacerbate symptoms of asthma. I realize you have zero respect for the FDA, but they consider safe. Oh, It DOES in fact have an enzyme which 'makes you hungry later'. lol Hdales link is correct as far as it goes. I think it's best to avoid it during weight loss, but in general, there's nothing about it that's dangerous to your general health. p.s. is that you in your avatar 'brew?, 'cause if it is, I think we're related! You look SO much like my niece you could BE her! You're BOTH stunning , BTW"

lakelady said: "
Yeah that is me, Karen. When I saw your pic, I thought there was some resemblance for sure.
Yep, side by side, even hubby sees a resemblance. Any Scandanavian in your antecedents? Maybe we have a common viking ancestor."

lakelady said: "
We will jussay you are my Featherish MAMA or twin sis!
Better make it mama, seeing as how you're younger than my oldest child!:)"

lakelady said: "
That is a strange allergic reaction,Green Eyes. I think most foods can cause allergies to at least someone.
My Dad was so allergic to eggs that we kids put him in the hospital once by blowing the insides out of eggs into the sink, so we could have easter eggs we could keep. Just the fumes got him. I'm DEATHLY allergic to pickled herring, (Pretty easily avoided) but not fresh herring. ..and about MSG, I agree it just doesn't make that much difference in the taste of food. Anybody remember 'Accent? It was a seasoning that was pure MSG and a couple of recipes I used to use called for it. I ran out once and just went ahead anyway, omitting it. I couldn't taste a difference, so I just stopped using it. Nobody ever noticed."

lakelady said: "
WOW. I would be really scared if I had a deadly allergy. Did you find out about the herring by trying it? If so, what was your experience?
I ate some at a family picnic. I was fairly small and our relatives in Denmark were always sending us these little wooden boxes of salted herring (my dad missed it from home and you couldn't get it here at the time) and I LOVED that, so when I saw herring at this picnic I thought I'd like it. My breathing passages closed up and I was suffocating. I Believe it's called anaphylactic shock. My brother was (is) EXTREMELY allergic to bee stings so my mother, who was a nurse, always carried a syringe of epinephrine with her (like anaphylactics carry epi-pens now) and immediately injected me. 30 years later, I accidentally ate an hors douvre at a party that had pickled herring in it. Fortunately there was a party guest with severe asthma who carried an epi-pen and recognized the danger I was in and used it on me. The emt's said he saved my life. Needless to say, I never eat any hors douvres now, that I can't clearly recognize ALL the components of!"

MissVenus said: "Glutamate is naturally occurring in a number of foods. Monosodium Glutamate is simply the salt crystal form of glutamate. It ISN'T bad for you (there are a small number of people who have an actual allergy, the rest is just placebo affect). Glutamate makes things taste better, its a flavor enhancer, found in everything from kelp to tomatoes to young peas to Parmesan cheese. Because of the sodium, it probably isn't a good idea to consume a ton of MSG, but it is NOT going to hurt you. (MSG is one of the most popular seasonings in China. Check out their health stats. No one in China suffers from Chinese Restaurant Syndrome...)"
