Calorie Question

DLT said: "My brother-in-law had bypass surgery done around Christmas. He's 6'4" and weight in over 400 lbs. After the surgery, I can't remember the number of weeks he had to do this for but he was put on a liquid diet, then food was introduced back to him. He was able to consume a whole tablespoon of Jell-o in a day, and he couldn't finish it, it filled him up. There are certain foods that you can't have and others that have to be introduced back to your body. For instance, if he eats a regular M&M it makes him sick enough to throw up. If he eats a peanut M&M he's fine. Everything he eats now is very, very small portions and he is actually full."

If too little calories equals no weight loss, why do people that have gastric bypass lose a bunch of weight?? I doubt they're eating 1200+ calories a day with they're stomach reduced to such a small size. Anyone have an idea?"

Cupcake said: "Thanks for the info. It confused me how people who have had the surgery can consume so little calories and still lose weight, while someone who hasn't had the surgery doesn't have weight loss when they go under 1000 cals. This sheds a little more light on it, thanks."

helplesscase said: "Well, I always figured that the less calories you eat, the more you lose. But that is unhealthy as im sure you know. And people who have that surgery lose weight because of the "surgery". I dont know though, im even confusing myself."

I'm sure their metabolisms are slowing down, but if you think about it, someone who weighs 400 lbs probably burns a lot more Calories than someone who weighs 180 lbs. And once their "pouch" heals and stretches a bit, they usually can consume about 1200 Calories and continue to lose weight. It's tricky though, I know a woman who had GB done and weighed like, 290 before surgery...lost down to 175...then gained back to 250 by "cheating the surgery"...that is, she drank a lot of sugary fluids that pass right through the pouch without filling her up. It's not as miraculous of a surgery as most people think it is. Most of those people have to really try hard to lose the remainder of the weight...through good old diet and exercise.
