Slim-Fast

DLT said: "I've tried Slim Fast on many different occassions. Those shakes taste good but don't fill you up. I end up irritable, hungry, get a head ache and eventually shake. I felt so desperate for some solid food that it always failed. Not to mention that it costs lots of money for their shakes and bars. Companies like these get rich from our failures. The only true thing that works is to watch portion sizes, monitor fat and calories, drink lots of water and excercise. You can't diet just to lose weight, it has to become a new way of life or you will put the weight back on."

I have used it in the past and found it sweet and grainy no matter what I did. It is best to eat the amount of calories your body needs to maintain itself daily. It takes you just as long to eat a handful of carrots and drink a half glass of milk as it does to drink the shake. Most ask for milk so that is high in fat as well. Most of the powders are replacement for food, it is best to stick to healthy foods rather than replace food with drinks."

I haven't been counting calories really at all, but have eliminated pasta, rice, bread and other refined flours from my daily diet. I have lost a lot of food cravings, too. I can't afford to munch myself to death."

Heather said: "
SnapPea, Do you count carbs or have you simply eliminated the items you mentioned? Are you still eating healthy amounts of vegetables, fruit, and dairy? It sounds like you're doing it very healthfully.
I have eliminated those items. Plus sugar. I have been counting net carbs, eating chicken, turkey, low fat cheeses, salads and steamed veggies. I seem to be stuck right this second as far as the scale goes, so I have ignored it. I also assume that I am building some muscle mass."

Heather said: "A date with a tape measure could easily confirm it. I'll have to look for it ( I know there is one around here somewhere )"

UniqueMystique said: "I can't even drink the stuff....definitely is not palatable to my taste buds. Be careful....Slim Fast has been linked to gallbladder problems."

UniqueMystique said: "It's with prolonged use of the shakes. I know you are only thinking of trying it for 5 days which should be fine. I was just throwing information out there for others to be careful if they use it or have used it for an extended period of time. I should have made myself more clear.....I apologize. I had a few episodes with my gallbladder a few years back and the first question that I was asked was, "Do you or have you ever used Slim Fast?""

spectrachic311 said: "Just my 2 cents on Slim-Fast...I couldn't do it because the shakes made me too jittery and gave me the runs. Then again, I do have irritable bowel syndrome, so if you have that, probably skip doing the Slim-Fast shakes ;)"

SnapPea, I might be wrong (and I will go check after this post) but didn't you just have a weight loss breakthrough? If yes then be proud, very proud of keeping that crap out of your diet. Remember that our bodies are more technically advanced than any machine on this, just for emphasis reasons, universe! We were made to work off of natural energy folks! For example...we all know that vitamin D is a very important vitamin right? Especially in women. We have this shitty thing called menstration, which it turn leads to bone mass, structure, etc, loss. Well the reason the doc tells us women to get as much calcium in our diets to avoid that loss is because Vitamin D needs calcium to have that positive reaction for us. The reason we need that calcium to react is because MOST of the vitamin D we get is refined! Now for the facts. Ever wonder why your grandmother said playing outside keeps you healthy? The natural source of vitamin D comes from the sun, and it does not need calcium to react. Every waking minute you spend in the sun, you are soaking in God's (or whatever you believe in) pure vitamins. Of course everyone is scared of cancer these days but reminder SPF-15 is the recommended amount every 50(or so) minute intervals! This allows you and children a lot of good sun."

Holly said: "Has anyone here tried the Slim-Fast Jump start plan for a little rev up in thier diet? I'm thinking about doing it for 5 days and then going back to healthy, balanced eating. I just wanted to hear some fellow dieter's thoughts first. If you're not familiar with it....You have 3 slim fast shakes a day, 1 big salad, 3 servings of fruit, lots of vegetables (other than the salad), and sugar free jello galore! Of course tons of water and daily exercise is also recommended. I know it isn't an interesting diet for your palate, but it is only 5 days. We've been talking about how mixing up your calories can be beneficial, so I thought I would give this a try. I did it years ago and lost quite a bit, but I was heavier then and so that made weight easier for me to lose. I weighed myself this morning and am stuck in a rut. I feel a need for a push in the right direction. (down!)"

Holly said: "Yes, I totally agree with you. I do know how to lose weight. I've gone from 210 (or more, I hated to weigh myself) down to about 135 over a two year period. This being my senior year as an undergraduate, I've decided to be a full time student (I'm no longer running around the sales floor 40 hours a week) and I think that has caused my weight to increase by about 15 pounds. (Bringing me to 150) After losing the weight, I kept it off and maintained for about 5 years. Now, I just need to kick myself in the butt again and get those last 15 pounds back off. I think I'm looking for a solution where I don't have to put too much concentration on measuring and calorie/fat gram watching. I'm feeling very bogged down with reading, writing papers, and my finance projects. Plus, I'm trying to line up a job for June or sooner. Not to mention, planning a wedding for this summer. I'm doing really well with exercising and drinking water, I'm just lacking in the food catagory. I like watching my servings in the "fat race" diet, but I guess I'm doing something wrong. I want to see at least a couple pounds drop! Alrighty, I'm not going to give up. The weight loss quest continues. ;)"

Holly said: "Oh, wow, that is a good thing to know. It is definently important to have the facts before starting anything."

I'm sure that it is the muscle mass thing.. :D"

I actually felt so bad that I was sipping the shake so slowly that I felt full half way through it. I did, however, have the other half in the middle of the day. I have not used it for weight loss."
