Attention Pet Owners! Pet Food Recall

Sweetvirgo said: "My two cats are okay because we rarely give them canned / pouched foods and the dry food isn't affected according to the main website. But, even if one of my cats had been affected, I really cannot see myself spending $50,000.00 for treatment like someone did on their dog. I would readily spend it for a child but not for an animal. It might sound cold-hearted but I'm all for the $60.00 needle to put them to sleep and going to the Human Society or somewhere else to pick up a new one to love and nurture (so long as they're healthy and not already near death)."

Heather said: "Just thought I'd pass the word that there has been a massive recall of pet food for both cats and dogs.
Menu Foods, the Ontario-based company that produced the pet food, said Saturday it was recalling dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food was distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway. An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said.
To find out if your pet food was issued in this recall, the complete list is here. 48 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food were recalled."

Heather said: "You're welcome. We use Dad's cat food so we weren't affected either. All of those are familiar brands and I feel bad for the people that lost their pets, too. It isn't a good story at all.."

Heather said: "They look like you're coming after them with newspapers or something. Both very cute little rascals though. I love the markings on your kitty!"

Heather said: "They've extended the pet food recall again. Here's a link to the list of foods affected. Menu Foods Recalled. Just thought I'd give a heads up!"

Heather said: "Just a follow up for anyone that cares.. 2 people have been detained for suspicion in these animal poisonings.. What sickos!"

cvalh said: "Ok, I have to chime in... I don't remember exactly what my parents feed Mars, but I do know it's one of these big grocery store brands... Because, as someone else said, it's the only one that doesn't give him stinky runs, and that he's willing to eat! And to share a picture of him and Isis (he's almost 2 years, she's almost 1 year), though this was taken a while ago. She's bigger now. Even in that pic, he's a 13 lb cat, and it's pure muscle. The vet complimented my dad on what good shape he's in. Mars is, of course, the orange one."

spectrachic311 said: "Thanks for the heads up, Heather. I feed my dog Iams Active Maturity, but I haven't bought any recently. I'll make sure that the next bag I buy is a different brand. I actually think Purina ONE is pretty good food; I just have to find the Sensitive Systems kind in a store by us and I'll be all set."

spectrachic311 said: "Hey, SisMorphine...that's so cool that you are really into canine nutrition. My parents breed Shetland Sheepdogs and they feed theirs Canidae, I think. It's pretty good stuff, I guess. I was wondering if you have any food recommendations for a dog with digestive system issues? My dog gets diarrhea at the drop of a hat and I'm looking for a really good food to feed her that is highly digestible and won't give her the runs. I had her on Iams Active Maturity, but that was going right through her and it was like feeding her sawdust. Any ideas? Thanks :)"

xlilphishx said: "I heard about this too. As nutty as this sounds- I make homemade dogfood. Top breeders do this because rumors have been around that dogfood is not good at all."

xlilphishx said: "
Hope you don't mind a newb chiming in on a subject I actually know something about. Good quality pet foods come from pet stores, not grocers or department stores. I feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's soul to my chihuahua, (and fosters when I have them) and while the pricetag on the bag is more than, say, kibbles n bits, it lasts longer, because there is less filler, which equals less waste. Smaller meal quantities with bigger results. Her poops are smaller, her weight is better (she was a chunkhound before I knew better about the foods), and her all over appearance is better. Smoother hair, etc. I feed Diamond Brand Kitten to my 1 yr old cat, and it is the "low end" of the "high end" foods. So the price is very reasonable, same concept as the dog food, less filler=less waste, and it's good for her. I do feed the ferals the cheap stuff (special kitty, meow mix, etc) as I can't afford to supply all of god's creation and wildlife with the "expensive stuff" so this recall hits close to home here. Hope everyone who bought the recalled food saw the notice before feeding fluffy or fido. :)
Crazy- I see you have a Chuihuahua. I have one too. He is 14 pounds! I feed him the reccomended amount and he doesn't have a thyroid problem. How much does your dog weight if you don't mind me asking?"

xlilphishx said: "
I think homemade dog food is the best idea. Can you guys that make your own tell me what you use other than meat products? I have never made any myself but have been thinking lately and reading labels with all the fillers you really are not buying the best thing to feed your pets that you love as family. And as to the chicken thing, I never like there chicken anyway, but maybe we need to find out more bad things on food served in restaurants and we all would only eat from home or bring our food with us. It is the same principle as with the dogs it has got to be better for us in the long run.
Ground Turkey, Rice, Carrots and Peas. They LOVE it."

GreenEyes said: "This is very sad, and my heart goes out to the pet owners that have lost their beloved pets:( Side note, Iams might claim to be a "good" company but they truly are not. They test on animals and make them live in really bad conditions. I have seen hidden video footage of their labs and what is done to the animals. It was not good, not good at all."

HDales said: "EEEEEEK!!! I just bought Max (my kitty) some IAMS food. I read the press release on that site and it sounds like its just that wet gravy food that is bad. Hopefully. I just bought Max $30 worth of hairball & weight control food. I have heard bad things about Iams.. but its the only thing my cat can eat. everything else gives him the smelliest runs and most other brand food he refuses to eat. He has the nicest thickest softest coat on him. I hate supporting a company that might do terrible things to animals but I don't want to starve my Cat because he refuses to eat the other food and I don't want to give him food that gives him the runs.. so I am stuck :P Also.. have you seen what the chickens that KFC uses to make food are like?!?! Featherless beakless creatures.. soooo gross. I never will eat KFC again in my life!!"

HDales said: "Its just nasty to read about kfc's torture chamber for chicken.. poor little birds. I have seen pictures of the featherless ones and I am not sure if the beakless is just a rumor. Nonetheless.. ICK!!"

angel_rising said: "Thanx for the heads up. Thankfully we do not have any of the affected pet food here. Angel"

Diamond said: "HDales - I haven't seen those chickens, I don't think I want to either!"

Diamond said: "Just thought I'd post that more pet foods have been recalled. This time it's Del Monte. Here's a link to brands that were recalled: More Pet Food recalled Be sure to check your cupboards!"

Valalor said: "im not sure what brand we use. but we make sure our cats eat 100% natural food.. non of that meat bi product stuff cuz you dont know whats in that..."

lakelady said: "This is terrible. Pet owners who really care about their pets buy the pricey eukanuba and iams pet food. Interesting that it's manufactured and brand named by someone else! Looks like the people who buy bargain purina were the safe ones! Of course my pets are safe, my nutty husband MAKES our dogs food and freezes it. I have to thaw it out the night before to feed them. And HE says he doesn't believe in spoiling animals or children!"

lakelady said: "Yes , Heather, I seem to have forgotten the IMPORTANT thing! Thank you for the tip. You may have saved some people from shattered hearts today! Feel great about yourself!"

lakelady said: "
Ground Turkey, Rice, Carrots and Peas. They LOVE it.
yep, and Dan also puts in some steamed beef liver, and some type of vitamin mix he concocted and some flax seed.(no, I DON"T know why) oh, btw, if you feed cats a totally veggie diet they go blind, something with their retinas and a vital fatty acid missing in veggies and grain."

lakelady said: "Hey, you guys remember Dan's Christmas pup? In case you don't, here's two pics, then and now. Oh, btw, he named him Chaucer."

**Shorti** said: "Thanks for the alert! I buy cat food at both Food Lion and Walmart, luckily we only buy Friskies and Purina dry food so our kitties are safe. But we used to feed them Special Kitty a long time ago, glad we stopped feeding them that stuff!"

**Shorti** said: "Aw what cute pets! I also have a turtoise-shell colored cat. :) Genetic mutations they are...and all of them female! Mine has much lighter tan patches though....and is also missing an eye. :D I love my one-eyed kitty. My other cat is a nice and fat generic grey stray. Shes also lovely cause she has one yellow eye and one orange eye. My house is just a bunch of freaks!"

CrazyBird7 said: "lilphish.... My chi weighs in at between 8.5 and 9.5 pounds. She's a nice stocky 8.5 when I'm successful at keeping her out of the catfood. She was a very overweight 11 when I was feeding 1/2 of the recommended daily amount of cheap lil'bites made by purina I believe. And she too, does not have a thyroid problem. :) Here she is snuggling with the cat. Do they look busted or what? "

And I wouldn't give her up now. :) Shorti.... I love your one eyed kitty!! I have this "underdog complex" and I love animals that are somehow "less than perfect" or considered less desirable by the general public. :)"

CrazyBird7 said: ":( http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=2975912&page=1 Rat Poison to Blame for Pet Food Contamination March 23, 2007 — ABC News has learned that investigators have determined that a rodent-killing chemical is the toxin in the tainted pet food that has killed several animals. A source close to the investigation tells ABC News that the rodenticide, which the source says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food. Watch "World News" for full details on the extent of the poisoning. A news conference is scheduled for this afternoon by experts in Albany, N.Y., where scientists at the state's food laboratory made the discovery a week after a massive recall of 60 million cans and pouches was issued. The chemical is called aminopterin. What investigators can't say so far is whether this is the only contaminant, if it is in all of the recalled food, or if it's in enough quantity in to sicken more animals. There is some good news according to the source. Knowing the chemical should aid veterinarians who are treating animals that have been sickened by the pet food. Aminopterin is used in the United States in, of all things, a cancer drug, according to the source. For a week, investigators have been looking for a cause behind the 15 confirmed pet food deaths tied to contaminated pet food. Many animal doctors, including those at New York's Animal Medical Center, suspect there will be a much larger rash of cases after they learned about an additional 200 reported cases of kidney failure in animals. Doctors at the hospital, which is considered the Mayo Clinic of veterinary medicine, say they noticed the kidney failure while studying sick animals from last Friday to Monday, and traced the cases back to the 60 million cans and pouches of recalled food from Menu Food. "I was shocked and surprised — acute kidney failure is not a common problem," veterinarian Cathy Langston told ABC News. "I've already heard about 200 cases, and so I bet that there are probably going to be thousands." So far, the government and the pet food maker, which sells food under 91 brand names, have confirmed 15 deaths. But the investigation to locate the toxic contaminant that caused the kidney failure in animals had not pointed to a cause until today. "This is very much like finding a needle in a haystack," Don Smith of the Cornell Veterinary School said earlier this week. "We're going to keep working at this until we find the cause." Investigators had already begun looking at the possibility that a pesticide or chemical may have been on the wheat used to produce the Menu Foods dog and cat food. The Food and Drug Administration, which was notified of the tainted food one day before the recall, said it's frustrated and realizes the growing crisis is an emotional one. "This is tragic," said Stephen Sundolf of the FDA's Veterinary Medicine group. "It is certainly uncommon. We expect pet food to be safe." And it's a crisis, if the New York hospital is right, that may not end for weeks. "I'm worried that there are more deaths to come from chronic renal failure over the next several months," Langston said. "It's not over." This whole thing stinks. And Menu Foods is a huge corporation. They package foods for so many brands out there I think the recall list will only continue to grow. And I wouldn't be surprised if by the time it's all said and done, some dry foods are found to be tainted as well, either from direct usage of the tainted product, or cross contamination....."

SisMorphine said: "If anyone wants help in deciding what is best to feed their pet please let me know! I am a canine nutrition nut and am always happy to help someone in choosing the right dry food for their pet, or help them if they want to venture into the world of raw!! In addition to my regular job (daycare and kennel coordinator) I am apprenticing with a trainer and work in a pet food store on the weekend (ie: right now). Not one of the foods we carry has been recalled, so there's something to be said for knowing what to stock!! My dogs are usually on raw, but due to my current lack of a freezer they are on Innova Evo dry."

SisMorphine said: "California Natural is pretty easy on the stomach (actually was specifically developed for sensitive stomaches and allergy dogs). My dogs like the Herring and Potato formula, but they also have a chicken and a lamb and rice."
