cvalh said: "Spectra, you sound like me... I'm Irish, English, German, Cherokee, and possibly some other things."

I think some of our neighbors made it too, based on the smell outside this afternoon :P It's kind of hard to make boiled cabbage without it stinking up the place, but if you use enough water and cook it right, it doesn't smell hardly at all. BTW---Is anyone here Irish? I am, a little anyways. I'm about 50% German and the rest is a mix of Irish, English, Welsh, and Native American (Cherokee). My hubby is 100% German, but he celebrates St. Patty's Day too!"

Soda bread is a bread made with baking soda. It's very good and you can play around with it and make tons of flavors. I hope everyone is having a fun, happy and lucky day!:) Best wishes and blessings to all."

lakelady said: "We're having a party! Soda bread, Corned beef and lots of it for sure! Also Irish whiskey! i REFUSE to dye good beer green though. Still, it won't be a bad party for someone born in Denmark! (my MIL was half irish, she gave me tips!)"

lakelady said: "Sorry help, getting ready for party, didn't see your q til now. Here's MIL's (the irish one) recipe for soda bread, WAY, WAT better made a day ahead (don't know why) Soda Bread 1˝ cups white flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 2˝ cups whole wheat flour 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons molasses 2 cups buttermilk Heat oven to 400 degrees. Sift together white flour, salt and baking soda. Add whole wheat flour, stir together. Cut in butter with pastry cutter or two table knives. Stir in molasses. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour buttermilk into the well and mix just enough to form a “raggy” dough. Scoop out dough onto a lightly floured surface; knead only a few times. Divide dough into two round loaves. Place loaves on a greased (or use a no-stick cooking spray) baking sheet. With a sharp knife, cut a criss-cross across the top of each loaf. Bake 45 minutes. Makes two loaves. p.s. If you don't want to go out for buttermilk just sour some milk by adding a teaspoon of vinegar to it and waiting 10 minutes, tastes the same."
