Obesity Surgery Triples among Us TeensObesity Surgery Triples among Us Teens

I can't imagine a worse punishment for a kid...rerouting their digestive tract before they have a chance to try changing their lifestyle. I guess when I was 18 and overweight, I would have probably thought a bypass operation would have been great because it would have been like minimal effort (I know it's not, but teenagers sometimes don't see all sides to some issues). When you're a teen, your metabolism's at its highest and your habits are forming...it's the optimal time to begin a new lifestyle and NOT by cutting yourself open and rerouting your guts. It's a little different if you are older and physically disabled by your weight and have literally exhausted all of your other options.
Lakelady--farm work IS hard, but yeah, you can be fat and still work that hard. My brother in law is definitely chunky (even though he can bale hay like mad), but he eats so much (and drinks a lot of beer) that it cancels out the amount of exercise he does. He gains weight every winter when farm work tapers off and loses most of it during the summers when he's very active. Baling hay is definitely a good workout...it's great for the upper body. And chopping wood is great too. When my husband spent his semester vacations chopping wood for an hour a day, he got THE most ripped abs ever."

It's so hot and stuffy up there and the bales just fall off the elevator and if you aren't careful, they'll bonk you on the head. The worst thing is that every time I help my husband do it, he reverts back to this "farmhand" mentality and sort of forgets I'm his wife. He treats me like I'm a tough farmhand and when I start whining about being hot and itchy and my arms hurting, he tells me to suck it up. Which makes me mad, of course. Once I threw a 55 lb hay bale at him for being such a punk and he stopped right then. :)
We don't have copperheads by us, thank God. Just little garter snakes that get in the bales occasionally. Or the odd gopher now and then. Pretty gross :P
We never have to go get bales out of the fields, though. We have a wagon hooked up behind the baler, so the bales just fly up and you stand on the wagon and stack as you go. It's no fun, but it would sure beat picking them up from the ground."

REASONABLE portions.
More activity.
Slower eating, less rushed lifestyle.
Do these things and you won't be on the path to obesity. The portions at restaurants here is just insane. Kids in this country aren't signing up for sports or going to the parks or just doing anything productive. Video games and staying at home...not burning the calories. And we eat like we're in an eating contest. Slow down!"

Then we have the fake healthy foods, such as all the products that say trans fat free. It is sad to say that many people are fooled into thinking that these products are good for you. YEAH RIGHT

[*]Rushed lifestyle

I think we all know people that grab mcdonalds or other fast food atleast 4 times a week instead of cooking themselves. When asked why most of the time these people say they just dont have enough time to cook

Many people eat way to fast. They do not even relize that they are full until they have eaten too much

[*]Seditary lifestyle

It is sad to say that most people sit on there butts all day. wether it is becuase of a desk job or becuase they enjoy videogames to much, sitting around all day helps contribute to the problem
I hate to say it but the "American" lifestyle is killing us. We need to redefine the way we live, not just for ourselves but for our children who are paying for our epidemic with an epidemic of there own. We need to set a healthy example for future generations. It is sad that so many children are to the point where they are turning to surgery.

Europe is also facing problems with a "fat" country.
Portion control might have something to do with it, but what about the foods the kids are eating? If they are eating like a lot of crap like other teens I'd blame that."
Diamond said: "Think about the demographics for a minute.
Who are the primary employees at fast food joints?
Teenagers.
Working in a fast food place probably helps contribute to overweight teenagers, too."

lakelady said: "Matts right. I've come to the conclusion that it's ALL about portion control. Yes, we want our teens to be more active, BUT we are far too quick to blame the video-game-mtv-watching lifestyle. This is farm and ranch country and I personally know rural kids who get up at the crack of dawn daily, take care of stock, haul feedsacks and hay, maintain farm equipment, and OTHER major heavy activity, all before breakfast! (I used to be one of them) In the summers they can spend ALL their daylight hours walking up and down corn rows with rogueing spades and later, pulling tassels off each plant, often in sticky, irrigated rows! These kids have as many problems with obesity as the urban kids do! The sheer amount that they eat is STAGGERING! Even the sled dogs in the iditarod do all that work on two dried fish a day!"
lakelady said: "Spectra, you bring back not-necessarily-so-fond memories of my youth! The actual baling wasn't so hard, but the picking up the bales and throwing them on a moving wagon was HELL! And of course we baled with twine back then, so while the hay was drying we had to go out and turn the bales so the twine underneath wouldn't rot. (plastic 'twine' has since done away with this chore). I don't know HOW many nests of baby copperheads (local poisonous snakes) we uncovered every year underneath those nice warm bales, but it was a LOT. Not a job for the faint-hearted!"

:sad010: Its just so so so sad. I feel like we are all surging out of control...I feel scared... like I have to loose this weight now, I dont want to become diabetic, or have heart problems or high cholesterol, or worse...go under the knife because I cant stop eating awful foods. I am scared I will always be big....that something like this will happen to me. My fear drives me to the gym everyday, hopefully for the rest of my life.
Aww, *gives Shorti a hug* :("

When someone has a severe weight problem in their early teens, I can only think it's due to valid medical reasons, or feeding habits that were established in their more dependent years, when their parent were making the decisions about food.
Most teenager metabolisms ought to be high enough that weight loss through diet and exercise would be very effective treatment (not always fast, but effective), if you can still walk, and you can decide what to eat (And you have no medical reasons that diet would not work) you ought to be able to lose weight.
Don't most obesity surgeries involve limiting the amount of food one can ingest? Obviously, if one only eats 3 oz of food every five or six hours, they will lose weight (unless you can find 3 oz of extremely calorie-dense stuff).
I hope (but perhaps in vain) that the children, even the older teenagers, that had these surgeries were at severe and/or immediate health risk that warranted what I would call a drastic solution, and that it wasn't done simply as an 'easy(ier) way out'.
Don't worry Shorti, if you keep working at eating healthy and getting a reasonable amount of exercise, things will start looking up, I don't know how 'big' you are, but I don't have any doubts about your ability."
