Grams of Fat?

Starfish said: "This is probably a very elementary question, and I apologize... but should I only be counting calories? Or grams of fat as well? If I should be paying attention to grams of fat, what is a good amount to eat yet still lose weight? 6 grams of fat a day? 4? And last, should I be paying attention to 'total fat' or 'saturated fat'? I'm lost."

Starfish said: "Wow - really? *blinks* That's great news! Thanks! I was terrified that it would be far lower than that. See, there's this chicken drumstick in the fridge... taunting me... Now that I hear it's okay to eat it, I will. Happily. :D"

Starfish said: "Thank you! That was very informative! :)"

DLT said: "You need to monitor both fat and calories. Check out http://home.earthlink.net/~the-fat-race They have an explanation and also a great planner that allows you eat right and without having to get out a book or read labels and start counting everthing."

shrkntz said: "It is best to read the white labels because then you know exactly what you are eating. I have been able to get a exact count on reading the labels and it is easier to keep a journal by doing so."

Heather said: "The Zone diet is one that goes by a 40/30/30 plan. Here is the basic way it works: Your daily diet consists of 40 percent high fiber, mostly low-glycemic carbohydrate; 30 percent high-quality protein; 30 percent fat. This is supposed to help eliminate cravings and hunger pangs. Just another way to count calories, really."

helplesscase said: "Well, I think it would be a good idea to count both your calories and grams of fat. But as for how many exactly, I dont really know. Sorry.... :("

spectrachic311 said: "Calories are ultimately what count. But you should know that fat has more Calories per gram than protein and carbohydrates. Fat has 9 Calories/gram while protein and carbs have 4. But yeah, try and shoot for about 25 grams a day of unsaturated fat and as long as you're not eating a ton of calories from other sources, you should lose. Try to shoot for about 1800 Calories/day (depending on your age, sex, ht, wt, etc) :)"

Holly said: "As long as you eat healthy foods and stick to about 25 grams of fat, you should do alright. I would try it for a while and see if it provides enough of a calorie reduction that you start losing wieght. You just have to be careful. Jelly beans and red vines are sugar free right along with fruits and vegetables! My mom counts fat grams rather than calories simply because it is quicker for her and that makes her more likely to stick with the plan. :)"

bound_inamorata said: "I remember back in college all the girls would eat only what was 3g of fat or less per serving. Is that a good rule of thumb or just way out there?"

Qian said: "You don't want to cut fat down too low, usually you want 25 to 35 grams of fat daily and you will lose weight. Don't cut it out completely though."

Qian said: "Per serving of what, everything is going to be different. Is this at every meal?"
