cvalh said: "animal fat... is really not that bad for you. I have nothing against vegetarians, and I think it's great that people are able to eat that way... But we can and many of us DO eat meat, and every time we do, we eat a little of their fat.
Now, there are lots of ingredients in those cupcakes that might turn me off, but that is definitely NOT one of them."
cvalh said: "Ok, now we're being "duh," as my students would say. I'm not saying I buy hunks of animal fat and eat it. I do buy lean mean, and in fact, I don't like the texture of fat, so I cut off whatever else I can. Nevertheless, it is naturally occurring. It's not some weird, unknown chemical.
I'm gonna stick with my usual mantra - everything in moderation. With obviously more focus on the known healthy stuff."
spectrachic311 said: "I haven't seen these, but I don't buy these kinds of snacks because I do not eat 100 calories' worth. They are too addicting and I'm not 100% sure I like the idea of eating some of those ingredients, either. The beef tallow is used to replace the trans fats, but some of the emulsifiers are kind of freaky.
I make my own muffins too...I use AllBran cereal and I think mine have something like 90 calories each. When you bake yourself, you control the ingredients and the finished product is often MUCH better tasting."
DBrew said: "Okay, I was at the store today and something caught my eye in the baked good section. It was a box of hostess 100 calorie pack cupcakes. Every 100 cal packet is complete with 3 mini, delicious, sinful looking cupcakes. So, I put the box in my cart. I had a nagging feeling the whole time they were in there that the health oriented part of myself would want to know the ingredients. So, finally I talked myself into looking at them and they included a possible dose of BEEF FAT, Hydrogenated oils, BLEACHED flour, high fructose corn syrup, and many other atrocities.
BTW-the front of the box had the "trans fat free" quote written on it.:signs053: The fats in these cakes can not be healthy if they are animal fats and hydrogenated oils! They were so tempting, but I knew I should not put that pollution into my body. When you sweets lovers see these tempting treats, please turn a blind eye and keep walking. I think your body will thank you in the end."
DBrew said: "Shorti, that is a great idea. Unfortunately for me, it is very hard to control myself around home baked goods. For some reason, those little plastic packages are a great barrier for me. If I could control myself, I would do exactly as you said. Do you use ener-g egg replacer by any chance?
Oh, Matt, I agree with treating oneself. I think home baked goods or bakery products are alright. These cupcakes had some really bad ingredients, not just decadent ones, BAD ones."
DBrew said: "Even if you are a meat eater, you should stick with the leanest meats possible. Animal fat is highly saturated and not heart healthy. The only animal fat that I know of that is healthy is the omega 3 fat found in fish oils which are not found in those cupcakes. The fat in those cupcakes is lard which even Mc Donalds does not use anymore."
DBrew said: "That is nice that you share with your co workers. Or, do you take them there for yourself?
I HAVE to have icing on cupcakes. I am an icing fiend- especially frosting. I will have to look for that kind you mentioned.
I WISH I could take some of my baked goods somewhere when they are done but my home is my work so all the things I make stay here and go into my tummy."
DBrew said: "Well, Klynn, if we were not human we would eat that way all the time-lol. ANy of those boxed little debbies and hostess snacks frighten me a little because they do not even resemble food. They are cute. They look like plastic toys and I just think there is probably no way they are harmless.
Once in awhile, I have bought the regular ones but the enormous list of incoherent ingredients made me think; Do I really want my loved ones eating this stuff? The answer was no. Now I buy chocolate candies. I know what the ingredients are for the most part and real cocoa has antioxidant benefits( though not as much in the milk). Sure it is not great to be giving myself and family sugar at all but you gotta live a little, am I right? I just do not think the snack cakes are safe, though delicious they may be."
DBrew said: "Moderation sounds good Cvlah. I cant eat products with lard being a veg, The idea sickens and saddens me but i do eatome naughty plant fats on occasion.
Brittany, if i would have caved and bought those, i am sure i probably would have eaten all the cup cakes in two days. You brought up a good point. 100 calories seems harmless but they add up fast when you eat pack after pack. I am sure I would not get full from them, either.
'
Bran muffins sounds nice and filling and also not addicting. I like muffins, but unless they are chocolate chip, I can control myself with them around."
DBrew said: "Yes, Klynn. It is not too very much, especially if you have a particularly clean diet. If it were not for the animal fat thing, I probably would have bought them but I am glad I did not for the many other reasons listed."
klynnfosh said: "Ok, I confess I actually bought the hostess cupcakes. They are not bad. Three small cupcakes about a couple of bites each for the 100 calories. I think a controlled treat if it keeps you from bingeing on something worse than it's not all bad even though it is not a healthy food, if we only ate healthy then there would be no extra sugar, no extra fat, no processed foods and we would all eat more fruits, nuts, and vegetables as we were intended to eat."
klynnfosh said: "Well I do agree it is not the best type of fat to put in your body but just to clarify we are talking 3 grams per serving and only 1/2 gram saturated fat. So although not a great choice to have bought not a terrible one as well. I think Shorti has the right idea though make them at home and you know what goes into them and then you can feel better about what you are putting in your body."
Matt_9 said: "Where'd you get them? I'd like to try those. :)
As long as you KNOW they aren't as healthy as eating 100 calories of fruits or veggies then you're alright. It's the people who think that 100 calories is acceptable no matter what it is that have a problem.
I'd say treating yourself to a 100 calorie Hostess cupcake every once in a while isn't going to kill ya! Now, if you have 3 a day...everyday...for a couple of months, yeah, that'll probably effect your overall health!
Edit: Oh, and I realize this post went against everything you were saying DBrew, sorry! I just can't see anything wrong with a pastry or a cupcake every now and then. Health nuts who restrict themselves to very certain foods kinda scare me..."
**Shorti** said: "Evil, dispicable, deceptive cup cakes!! Guess what?? you can make your own 100 calories cupcakes and control the stuff in them.
I buy the cupcake mix, and use applesauce instead of oil (low/no sugar variety), fake eggs instead of real ones... and if you stretch it out to 24 cupcakes thats less than 100 calories a cup cake (if the box nutrition and my estimates are correct). Try making a batch, and eat them like muffins without icing. It takes some getting used to but once you do they are a great low cal snack! Honest!
The best are the flavored kinds like strawberry(sorry lakelady), spice cake, sherbert, and party confetti. the Chocolate kinds usually are more calories because they have 'fudge sauces' to add, which is hard to substitute.
Also pillsbury has finally come out with a 'healtheir' (I use that term VERY loosely) icing for cupcakes. 1/2 the sugar because they substitute splenda. It still isnt a low calorie food, but its better than the original. So next time you are required to bake a cake or make cupcakes for your kids school, look for the low sugar icing, I bet they wont know the difference!:th_dblthumb2:"
**Shorti** said: "I just use the generic egg replacement at the grocery store. :D Its the cheapest and money is super tight right now.
When I do make an entire batch of cupcakes I take 5-10 to work 5-10 stay at home and the rest get packaged up to travel. That way they are portioned off. If I get to binging on them there arent that many to binge so it helps keep me in check when I only see 6 cupcakes in front of my instead of all 24. :) It reminds me I only have 6 so I better only eat 2 right now if I want to have some later."
