Annual Check-up

Heather said: "Thanks for the reminder, Unique. ((Sends good vibes for upcoming tests))"

Heather said: "Now the waiting game starts.."

Heather said: "I'm sure that everything will be fine. That's what preventative medicine is for. A while back a friend of mine went in for an examination because her husband found a lump in her breast.. after testing they found the same thing.. a cyst caused by caffiene. I wonder how caffiene can cause cysts?"

Heather said: "I'm happy to hear that your PAP came back clean. I'll bet your mammogram will come back clean, too! ((hugs))"

Heather said: "I'm happy to hear that you got the "all clear" Unique! Another good one for the books. :)"

Heather said: "Unique.. I think it's great that you are so open with your daughters.. Your kids seem like a riot!"

UniqueMystique said: "Well...it's time for me to play the waiting game again. I go for my annual female physical tomorrow morning. I so hate waiting the two weeks for the results. I'd rather know right then if I had something major to deal with. For those that don't know...In 2005 I was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cervical cells and had surgery to remove them. I had to go for check-ups every three months and then every 6 months and now I'm back to annual check-ups. Several of the tests came back abnormal after the surgery and I had to undergo even more tests. I hope that everything goes well and that the pre-cancerous cells are staying away!!!!! Ladies....if you've not had a regular annual exam....please don't put it off. If I hadn't had my problem caught early it would have turned to cancer. If you don't do it for yourself....do it for your family!"

UniqueMystique said: "Lakelady---the cauterizaton is still performed but only if conization doesn't work. Conization is where a cone shaped chunk is taken out of the cervix. HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer. HPV is sexually transmitted. However, my situation did not occur from HPV or any other sexually transmitted disease. My case is one of the few that resulted for an "unknown" reason. I urge you to get checked even if you feel that you are not at risk. I'm living proof that it CAN happen!!!!"

UniqueMystique said: "
Now the waiting game starts..
Yep...and it's definitely not fun! My visit turned out to be three hours long. I was sent for an unscheduled mammogram on top of the check-up. I found a tiny spot last month about the size of a BB. The doc wasn't too concerend but had the radiology department squeeze me in since I travel a ways to see her. It's probably a cyst due to caffeine consumption. So...here I am....waiting.......:whacky011:"

UniqueMystique said: "Thanks guys! I'm not really worried. I would just rather know now than to have to wait so that I can deal with it if there's a problem. I know that some people would rather NOT know things...but I'm not one of them. I'd rather do what I have to do and move on....ya know?"

UniqueMystique said: "
I wonder how caffiene can cause cysts?
I dunno....but I understand that caffeine and nicotine put a woman at a greater risk for the cysts."

UniqueMystique said: "
I am so glad that young girls can now get the injection to help minimize occurances of cervical cancer. It is so important to be checked regularly though......
Although my scare was not from the HPV, I'm glad that they now have a vaccine. I am, however, not glad that the state of Texas is now "requiring" the vaccine for girls ages 9 and up. It is required as one of their school vaccines! So....I now have to take my oldest, 11 years old, in for this vaccine. She knows about sex (thinks it and boys are disgusting), she's not even menstruating, hasn't even seen a gynocologist yet....how do I tell her that she has to get this vaccine to prevent a sexually transmitted virus?????"

UniqueMystique said: "Wow! My pap results came back quick! Everything checked out just fine. No problems. *Happy dance* Now....I'm just waiting for the results of the mammogram. :)"

UniqueMystique said: "Well...the mammogram came back good too! :D *happy dance* No more worrying for another year! Hehehe!!!!"

UniqueMystique said: "From my understanding....HPV is only spread through sexual contact. I'm not 100% sure though since I did not have HPV. My problem was not caused by HPV....I'm one of the lucky ones in the low percentile range that acquired pre-cancerous cells out of the blue! Texas is trying to make it so that the HPV immunization is "required" for school admittance along with the other school immunizations. They want to start giving it to girls at the age of 9. I have "mixed" views on this."

UniqueMystique said: "Conversation with my 11 year old after hearing it on the news (she's also terrified of injections): Daughter: *Puzzled look on her face* Why are we going to need another vaccination? Me: It's to help prevent girls from contracting HPV. Daughter: What's HPV? Me: It's a virus that's transmitted sexually and can cause cervical cancer in females. Daughter: So...you have to have sex to get the virus? Me: Yes...that's what I've heard. Daughter: Ewwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!! Then why do I need the shot????? Me: So that you won't contract HPV and possibly face cancer later on. Daughter: But.....I'm never gonna do that stuff!!!!! That's just icky!!!!!!! Do I have to get the shot even if I'm never gonna do that stuff????? Me: Yes. Daughter: But why???? I'm never gonna do that!!!!! Me: Cuz if they make it part of the immunization process then, by law, you'll have to take it. Plus....you might want to do that stuff when you get older. Daughter: Nu uhhhh!!!!!! Never!!!!!! That's just gross!!!!! *Mumbles* Can't believe I'm gonna have to get a shot for something I'll never need."

UniqueMystique said: "
UNIQUE! :th_SmlyROFL: If this conversation occurred at my house it would go more like this..... Daughters; why do we have to get another vaccination? me; to keep you from getting hpv Daughters; what's hpv? me; the virus this shot will keep you from getting, now be quiet and get in the car. depending on the age of the child, I'm definitely from the do-it-because-I-SAID-SO school of thought.
I don't keep much from my children. Especially if it has to do with "their" bodies....they have a right to know why something must be done. If they ask me a question....I do my best to answer it honestly and in a way that they'll understand. And Shorti----I'm not against the girls getting the vaccine....I'm very open and honest with my kids and I just want to know how I explain this to my youngest when she's 9 and required to get the vaccine. Especially when they don't give sex ed classes until they are 11 & 12....and it's extremely VAGUE!!!!! When I talk with my oldest about sex and boys she wants to stick her fingers in her ears and go "LALALALALALALALALALALALALALA" until my mouth stops moving. I know there are girls out there having sex at very young ages...and I know the vaccine will help. Since I'm so open with my children, how do I make a child of that age understand that they might need the vaccine when they feel that they will never be in a position to actually need it?"

xlilphishx said: "I personally do not think people should push the vaccine right now. It just came out. Wait a few years. Who knows what the side effects are. My gyno suggested getting the shot and I told her I am holding off because I am too afraid- who knows if it causes death or possibly passes cancer on to babies...."

GreenEyes said: "Yeah I was just thinking that it's about that time for me too UM. Last year was my first checkup in 10 years! Bad I know, but it was good to go and know that nothing was wrong. The doctor was pretty upset that it had been so long. My mom hasn't been in over 20 years, I try to tell her that she needs to go and be seen but she doesn't listen. I will keep you in my thoughts UM, hope everything goes good. Keep us posted."

GreenEyes said: "Oh I'm so happy for you UM! That's great news."

GreenEyes said: "I'm happy to hear the great news UM!"

DBrew said: "I did not know that, UM. I could see why you would be worried. Those tests worry me and I have not had any issues thus far. At least you are staying ahoead of the game and going to all your check ups. You can breathe easy knowing you are doing all you can do. I guess just try to stay as busy as possible to keep your mind off things- best wishes."

DBrew said: "Unique, I hope you will get your results soon so you will not have to be in agony too long.Don't you love how we are made to wait? Teaches us patience I guess. If your lump is something at least it is very small and hence very treatable. When my mom discovered hers, it was over 4cm- Huge for a tumor in the breast. I think you are okay if it is any consulation. Let us know what happens, kay?"

DBrew said: "Yay! I bet you are so happy!:)"

naynay said: "can u only get HPV as a sexually transmitted disease ? i saw a ad on tv about the vacine and didnt know if i should have one and if it is only from that then i have no need to get it"

scottish jen said: "I hope it all goes well unique, I'm sure it is very nerve racking waiting for results. I am so glad that young girls can now get the injection to help minimize occurances of cervical cancer. It is so important to be checked regularly though...... sometimes I think men really have things easier than women! However, men do have to start getting their prostates checked when they get older.:dazed052: .....Im sure thats not pleasant! maybe that makes up for some of the crap that women have to go through! jen"

Diamond said: "I'm happy to hear the good news, UniqueMystique!"

mahesh67 said: "Good luck with everything."

lakelady said: "I know that this probably won't help unique, but I had a diagnosis of pre cancerous cells on my cervix when I was 22! They were removed in office and the site cauterized. I could smell burning flesh for WEEKS. (I don't think they do it like that anymore) Biut in the intervening 30 years the condition hasn't returned and I can only imagine that treatment has improved VASTLY since then!"

lakelady said: "Oh, unique, I get checked VERY year. It's a condition of my health insurance from work, but I'd do it anyway, but thanks! And BOTH of my girls (even the married one), have gotten the vaccine, WITHOUT me nagging them! smart offspring I've got there!"

lakelady said: " :jump:  :th_alc: 10CHARACTERS"

lakelady said: "My views on this are a bit mixed as well. As everyone here knows, I'm against almost evry type of government interference. However, in this case, I don't see how this is any different than all the other childhood vaccinations we require. herd immunity would apply here just as it does with all the rest. A lot of people say it will encourage promiscuity in our girls, (which, btw, I consider a MAJOR load of bull) but assuming we all manage to keep our girls celibate until marriage,(ya, right) presumably then it's ok for them to have sex with their husband....and we can't control where HE has been!"

**Shorti** said: "This is so sad to admit but I really didnt much about HPV until I contracted it. I remember something about it in high school sex class but it didnt really get retained. What I think stinks is that men are the main carriers of this disease...and they dont even get any symptoms! IT can be very hard to detect in men so even if you STD screen your sexual partners before having sex (which abut 1 in every 150 women do now-a-days) you probably wont be able to tell who does and doesnt contract the disease! HARUMPH! Anywho its really a lot more common than people think and its getting worse and worse because it seems like no one talks about it! I equate it to getting chickn pox from one person that didnt know they had it or was contagous. Its just something you contract that you can fight. The stigmatism it gets from being sexual transmitted is what freaks everyone out into not talking about it. My sister contacted it from her now husband when she was 25. And I have talked to many other women that got it from their husbands as well. I contracted it from my BF. (boy did he get an ear-full) but it really wasnt his fault because he didnt know he had it. So anyway, long story short I think this vaccine is a great idea. I am still stuck on the mandatory part of it. But I think the topic of it being mandatory is scaring people into not getting it at all voluntarily which I think is a shame. Do you know how many 12-13 year old girls are sexually active now-a-days? More than I ever cared to know. But its true. Girls are having sex young. Want to do something about it? Have better control over your kids, don't deny them a vaccine that may help them in the end. Rant offically is over! Thanks for listening!"

**Shorti** said: "What I try to do with my neice when explaining something she doesnt understand is compare it to something she has already experienced. For example, as a little girl she HATED pink. Her favorite color was blue and dont even think about getting her in a dress. I would remind her of those feelings she had, and she would agree. Then I would ask her to think about now, how her favorite color in the world is PINK and purple. Everything must be pink, even her room is all magenta and purple. I would tell her, "See, even though you thought you would never like pink, you have changed over time. Now you love pink and there is nothing wrong with changing your mind. When you grow up you change, it happens naturally." I would tell your little girl that just like you want her to wear a helmet when riding a bike to prevent her head from getting hurt, you want her ot have a shot to prevent a possble sickness. Also bribery helps. Tell her it is very important to you and that if she'll only do this one little shot that you'll take her to her favorite place to celebrate surviving it! :) Another angle not yet mentioned for contracting HPV is getting it from medical institutions. Not even doctors and nurses are perfect and it is possible to contract the disease if instruments from one person are used on another. This idea may be too scary for your young one, but it is possible. Same way when you take your kid to the doctor and everyone in the room has the flu, you tell them to be extra careful not to touch anything. Same concept, they might understand it better."
