Does anybody know anything about aspartame?

Phenylketunuriacs can't have phenylalanine because they can't break it down. They also can't have dairy products, certain meats, and a couple other foods until their brains develop. The two amino acids in aspartame are present in other foods, so that's why I think it's pretty much safe to eat. The FDA has done lots of testing on it and they have definitively said that it doesn't cause cancer in humans. I still think Splenda has a better flavor profile and I like the fact that it doesn't break down in your system, but aspartame is a lot cheaper and it is more commonly used. Bottom line: If you're healthy, you can have aspartame without too much worry. It does have a bit of an aftertaste, so if that bugs you, you may want to try Splenda instead."

I use Stevia(an herb) or Xylitol(a plant based sweetener) or just plain old sugar. I do not want to take any chances. I know it is tempting to buy products sweetemed with aspartame, but I am pretty sure it has been shown to weaken the bones of women, and cause migranes., and a host of other things. I do not believe the government when they say something is safe. If it does that to you, think of what it may do to your baby if you breastfeed. Once in a great while, I buy some Splenda sweetened ice cream. It seems less harmful than aspartame, but I think chlorine is involved in it's production. To me, that makes it a very iffy thing to put in my bod. Alot of people think these things are harmless(esp. you science nuts!), but I do not want to take chances with myself."

naynay said: "wow a lot of for and against it....I think I trust that in healthy people, it is safe....I don't drink a lot of it..i just bought a drink mix and saw it on there so looked it up....I love my water and real juices..and I don't plan on drinking a lot of aspartame so I should be ok..but it is nice to know about what i put into my body:)"

I have mild fibromyalgia symptoms and they can be caused by aspartame along with other problems, be sure and note there are a number of other problems it causes. I came across the information while research fibro. Many people who give up the aspartame are becoming symptom free. It is a poision and I will no longer put it in my body. Hope this helps you."

klynnfosh said: "Shorti, they now have the diet drinks with Splenda as well and it is better for you than aspartame, they are also making sugarfree products as in snacks with splenda as well. There is a lot of options for diabetics now days, my mom lived with diabetes for 30 plus years so I understand his struggle, I also have a best friend with the disease, and she is giving up aspartame and has found she feels better."

lakelady said: "I really don't know anything bad about aspartame, I used it forever until splenda came out and it's in all my diet drinks still. I don't think anyone in reasonable health has anything to worry about. You should check if it's in any way bad for your breastmilk though, naynay. From the chemical make up, I'm fairly certain it will stay intact into your milk, but I don't know if it's bad for your baby or not. I REALLY doubt it though. Spectra's a science chick, she usually knows about these things."

lakelady said: "Okay naynay, I knew that aspartame was made from common amino acids that are in nearly all our food. what I didn't know was if you could get TOO much of these in breast milk from using it as an additive. I cracked one of my textbooks, here's what I found out... Aspartame is made from two amino acids, parts of protein, identical to those found in, for example, meat, cheese, fish, or mothers' milk. When we consume aspartame, it is broken down in the digestive system to very small quantities of common dietary components. Aspartame therefore brings nothing new to the diet. The two amino acids in aspartame are aspartic acid and phenylalanine (the reason pheynylketonurics should NOT use it). We consume these amino acids in much greater quantities in foods we eat daily as part of our normal diet. For example, a glass of milk (220 ml) contains seven times as much aspartic acid and more than three times as much phenylalanine as a serving (330 ml) of soft drink sweetened with aspartame alone. A new born baby will obtain more aspartic acid and phenylalanine from his mother's breast milk every day than there is in a litre of soft drink sweetened with aspartame. So it's safe for you to use as a diet tool even while nursing. Hope this helps."

I think those that experience bone loss, I would ask them how much calcium and milk they were drinking? Do I think it is good to drink a large quantity of diet drinks? NO, everything in moderation. It's really that simple. I do know of women who drink 5-8 diet cokes a day when I was in college. Did it help keep their weight down? probably. Did it contribute to ill-health because they werent also drinking milk, natural juices and water? most definably. All in all I think it is okay on a moderate scale, just like everything else. Yes I think you should let your body have natural sugar every now and then. However you wont find me swearing it off my diet due to BF's diabetes. If he didnt have these alternative sugar free drinks, his quality of life would be much lower. Plus we would go through insulin like CRAZY. And it is already the most expensive thing we buy at approx. $100 for a little 2 oz bottle. Sorry for such a LONG answer because all in all I think it boils down to moderation. Simple."

**Shorti** said: "Yeah we love splenda in our household!! We always try to substitute splenda for other artifical sweetners, but then there are some that dont trust that either. So anyway we just try to keep a balance of everything. I know he is going to live a long healthy life... even if he starts loosing his eye sight at 40 and all the other 20 complications that juvenile diabetes brings on. We tend to live by the moment we figure that's the best thing we can do for each other."

I like the one that can be used in baking, I forget the name? Malitol or splenda? i'm not sure but it tastes good in some things. I actually don't mind the yogurt with artificial sweetener in it. The brand is Source or something, it's delicious. I don't know much about aspartame but i've heard alot about it being neurotoxic and all sorts of crap. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but whenever my mom drinks anything with that in it, it really upsets me. Apparently it causes cancer in rats so I'm not really sure. I've also heard that fake sweeteners do contain calories and your body uses them just like normal sugar but it could be b.s. Knock yourself out , just be careful with that stuff. Aspartame is my least fav of the sweeteners out there. There are plenty of other sweeteners like Malitol, Sucrose and some other ones which are pretty taste. Splenda is supposed to be somewhat healthy but i'm no expert. [COLOR="Black"]Can somemone please answer the following question for me and send me a P.M if they have time, thanks ladies, and gents.
