Pharmaceutical companies are such money-grubbing jerks, I swear. No kidding...Restless leg syndrome? Give me a break. I saw another drug out there called "Relaxane" meant to be taken if you're stressed out. I wish people would realize that you can change your health so much without drugs just by improving your lifestyle. Chances are, your legs are restless because you just sit around on your butt all day, your blood pressure's high because your arteries never get a good workout, you have IBS with chronic constipation because you don't eat right (I have IBS and it's one of those diseases that is VERY responsive to diet and exercise)...etc. It seems like doctors these days only know how to prescribe pills and the pharm companies KNOW that if they "ask your doctor to tell you more about.....", that the doctor will give you the brand name stuff and probably won't offer a generic. It's so damn sneaky.
I did a lot of research during my undergrad at a lab that studied the link between tamoxifen and breast cancer. We also studied the effects of introducing different genes into cancer cells to increase estrogen and progesterone receptors to make them more susceptible to tamoxifen. Estrogen, in the proper amounts, is present in all women to some level. Too MUCH estrogen is bad for your body. This is why obese women tend to have higher levels of breast cancer: estrogen is fat soluble so when you have more fat on you, you have more estrogen as well. The whole HRT thing mimics that...it introduces lots of estrogen into your body which can cause cancer. Many of the symptoms of menopause are just uncomfortable-ness things...hot flashes, irritability, etc. Nothing major...I don't see how you couldn't just live with it until the symptoms ease up."

Everytime I see my doctors, they seem to say"there is a medicine for that". They give me a sample or prescription, and when I read the side effects, I do not take them. I have wasted 40$ this year on unused medicines. My cabinet is full!
Also, Ialways have to wait at LEAST an hour in the waiting room and it is not due to other patients, it is due to all the pharmeceutical reps that come in there. I would say there is about 1 every 15 minutes. They come bearing gifts, too. I once saw one come in with a huge tray of subs- it was crazy.
Thank you for the support concerning my mom. She is so caring she does not deserve this."
DBrew said: "Exactly! My mom never had a chance to know if she had menopausal symptoms. The docs put her on them to stop all of her periods and made it seem like a risk free wonder drug therapy. There are a couple other women in my community(mainly friend's moms) who had been put on HRT and ended up with double masectomies.
It is so sad to see the suffereing my mom has and is enduring. She is only 53!What a waste. She will not see my kids grow up."
DBrew said: "Did anyone watch the Today show this morning? Their was a brief report stating that there is a definate link between breast cancer and long term Hormone Replacement Therapy, even short term in some cases.
I just wanted to warn any menopausal women that might be on this sight because this is a truth that I have recently known well.
My own mother was on major HRT for approx 10 years and ended up with a very agressive form of breast cancer. Her tumor grew in about 2 months and was 5cm, stage 4, when she noticed it.
Her treatment consisted of a double mascectomy, chemo, and radiation. This was two years ago. Now her cancer has returned to her bones and it is incurable. She has to be on chemo for a year and now is pretty much crippled because she lost her whole upper leg bone on the left side to the cancer.
If you are a woman considering this type of treatment, please seriously weigh out your oprions and decide if this treatment is REALLY needed."

I am just starting the menopause transition and I too believe you should stay away from drugs as much a possible, and speaking of the rest less leg syndrome, well my mom really had it and they didn't have anything for her to take, and I have heard the old remedy of sleeping with a bar of soap under the sheets did the trick for a lot, but I went to the doctor a couple weeks ago for muslce relaxers for my neck and shoulder and I mentioned my legs were really hurting after putting new flooring in the house and he gave me samples of the Relequip the new restless leg syndrome drug. After I read all the side effects and things that could go wrong I didn't even take them, but all they do is push the new drugs when you go to the doctors they must get a huge kick back or big bonus for pushing these new drugs. I say if you have to take different drugs you are always better off with a old one that has been around and tested then everything new that they put out for us to be guinnea pigs with. I hope your mom D will not suffer and that she can have good days, my thoughts and prayers will be with you both."

It does exist
I have had restless leg syndrome for years. I just never knew what it was until I saw the comercials for the pills. Mine is annoying but I never found it bad enough to mention it to my doctor, and it definatly is not bad enough to take pills for it.

My mother told me they were bad when I was a kid! (she was a nurse and nurses always notice patterns before anyone else) That, of course, includes birth control pills, hence my 'dividend' baby, but pharmaceutical companies keep pretty quiet on the big increase of cancer, strokes, ovarian cysts, ete, etc, in women who take artificial hormones. Now they have on those commercials about how great they are, and they are second to none in research, but profit is the bottom line. Who even heard of 'restless leg syndrome' until they invented a pill for it! Then people flock to their doctors for it and put in on their insurance, and OUR rates go up! They DO make constant advances in cures for serious disease, and the pills for restless leg syndrome and toenail fungus pay for that somewhat, but it's getting out of hand when they are allowed to use lauren hutton to tell us all how great these cancer-causing hormones make her life! (bet she doesn't touch'em!)"
lakelady said: "Yeah, I've known about this for a while. It just burns me up that the pharmaceutical companies use celebrities to convince women it's (hrt) some kind of panacea. For MOST women menopause is no big deal, it's a natural, normal cycle of life, not something to be 'cured' by artificial hormones! They're dangerous and the medical community has known that for 30 years!"
