Heather said: "You've got to be happy that they are putting security measures into affect if those types of things are happening. School was a lot less complicated in the 80's.. LOL."

Heather said: "That's great news, Unique.. I'm happy that you were able to help initiate change in the school system. I'm sure many student athletes will be happy to hear this.."

In special circumstances, you could sub other activities - which sometimes really stunk, because then you didn't do ANY physical activity (like the people who substituted the school play or something). Lakelady - I didn't know Nebraska was abstinence only. I think that surprises me, based on the health classes I had in 4th and 5th grade, when I lived in Omaha."

UniqueMystique said: "Yes.....the town that is closest to us and where everyone does all their shopping and extra activities offers this option to their high school students. The school where my daughter will attend used to allow this option about 10 years ago but I've no idea why they stopped. Anyhow....I dropped the bug in my chiropractor's ear (he's also a member of the school board) that my daughter was considering switching to the schools in the neighboring town because of this. He immediately took it to the Superintendent and they don't want to lose any kids in this district if they can help it. I have to prepare a report detailing the hours and the types of activities that the gymnasts partake in on a daily basis and submit it to the board. I have the Superintendent on my side as well because he's a former gymnastics coach. So....that's 2 members out of the 6. Just 4 more to sway. It will go to a vote in June. I'm also going to send a seperate letter with signatures from the parents of the children on the team who's children also attend this school district. Let them know that it will affect them on down the line too. We're not going to say that our children will not partake in PE or in the athletic program....we just want them to have this option available to our children if they should want to use it. We're also going to push for it to become available in the junior high level...not just the high school level."

UniqueMystique said: "I have a question. :) Does your public school system, at the middle school, junior high, and high school levels, allow outside physical activities count for thir P.E. and/or Athletic credits? I'm curious to know because I'm trying to get this instated at my daughter's school for the upcoming year. She'll be in the 7th grade (junior high). Many of the larger towns in this area allow it to count and therefore they are allowed to take other classes in it's place. Her current school system does not allow it. My reasoning for it is that my daughter is in gymnastics and already exceeds the states requirement for physical activity for the week. The state requires a minimum of 4 hours per week of physical activity to receive credit. My daughter is in the gym working out a "minimum" of 12 hours a week and often in excess of 20 hours per week. I just don't see the need for her to get 4 more hours of physical activity when she can get ahead on her academic course work."

UniqueMystique said: "
Have you heard anything back, UniqueMystique?
No...I haven't heard anything back yet. They are holding a policy change meeting mid-January but this issue probably won't be looked at until mid-June when more policy changes will be looked at. They are making so many security changes at the schools that the first meeting in January will be to resolve financial issues associated with the security changes. It's a "wait and see" game."

UniqueMystique said: "We live in a very small town....the population has fell under 1000 now. The entire school system has about 800 students though....many trough transfers from neighboring towns. We've had a few bomb threats and a few incidents with weapons amongst the students. Last year....a woman managed to get into the elementary undetected.....she was whacked out on drugs and was scaring all the kids. There was also a couple that was dealing drugs out of the doors that the kindergarteners and 1st graders used to exit the building after school last year. There have already been many security changes put in place but the school board is working on getting more high tech things put into place. Right now no one can come into or leave the building except from the main entrance. If a door is opened anywhere else an alarm goes off and the entire school can hear it. Cameras have been placed in all of the hallways. There are more "little" things that have been done too. It's a shame....I went to a high school in a town of over 100,000. My graduating class was over 800. The worst thing I ever saw in my entire school career was fist fights and cigarettes. My daughter....who is in elementary has to worry not only about about her classmates but about people from the outside too.....I think that stinks!"

UniqueMystique said: "I just found out this evening that the PE/Athletic credit proposal that I submitted was accepted and will be instated this next school year! I'm so excited about this passing! I really didn't think that the school board would pass it since school sports are a big deal in this small town. I'm so relieved that my daughters won't have to have more required activity on top of what they already do!:jump:"

spectrachic311 said: "That's a really good idea, UM. Our school systems here don't let kids do that, but they should. I knew a girl who was in figure skating and she skated a LOT outside of school. She complained that PE was just a waste of time for her (it probably was; we maybe "exercised" for about 15 minutes and the rest of the time we were doing other stuff) and she felt her time would be better used on a study hall so she could do homework at school and practice skating after school. I think you should push for it...it can't hurt to try. Are there other schools around that do a similar program?"

missred said: "I've never really even thought about any of this. When I was in schoool, band was the only other thing that counted as a PE credit (but I also lived in a small town where there weren't other outside sports activities to participate in). Here, many students participate in the Boy's and Girl's Club sports, so I wonder if it counts here? I don't even know. It should. PE is such a waste of time, at least the way it appears when I have done observations at local middle school and upper elementary. No wonder everyone hates it so much! I would hate spending 30 minutes doing suicides and then jumping rope. BORING. AS for health classes, they were a joke when I was in school too. I have no idea what they are like now, but I imagine they are still pretty useless. No one takes teaching health seriously, but students do need to know more about nutrition and, yes, even sex-ed, ect. There are ways that health classes could actually be meaningful, but I don't see that happening."

Brina said: "My high school and even my old elemenatary won't give gym credit for anything other than a gym class. You could have everday practice on a school team and it still won't count, but I think its a good idea to give some credit."

angel_rising said: "My little one might only be 2 months, but when I was in high school I checked into doing the same thing for myself. I was taking 7 hours of martial arts weekly. They told me that they could not do it becuase at our school they combined p.e with a health class. They would alternate days that we were in the gym with days we were in the class room. I still believe they could have let me go to studyhall on gym days, but it never happened. Did the school system give you a reason at least? Angel"

Diamond said: "Have you heard anything back, UniqueMystique?"

Diamond said: "Thanks for the update, UniqueMystique. I hope things go your way. Security in schools is becoming a bigger and bigger issue these days. I couldn't imagine having to walk through a metal detector just to go to classes, but I can't argue, either. Children need to be safe when they go to school."

Valalor said: "hey congrats... thats really cool. wish they did that at my highschool. all we did was play dodgeball or something, was really stupid... and with the security thing, ya its diff times, but i think they are getting carried away.. all they need is to lock all doors but one and post a cop at every school. They do that here and it seems to be working."

lakelady said: "Cvalh, I know, when my eldest was in school, it wasn't like that. He's 29 now, and says that when he and his wife have children, they're moving across the river. (He lives in a suburb of Omaha now) I asked my 14 year old's health teacher about it, because I think it's a VERY irresponsible and dangerous policy. Know what she told me? She said that it was a rider on some other bill and that it is now FEDERALLY mandated that all schools recieving any federal funding must teach 'abstinence only' or lose their funding! So I guess my son and daughter in law won't have to move my future grandchildren to Council Bluffs after all, but this policy is unconscioniable!"

lakelady said: "...so I did a little research on the sex-ed thing on the 'net, and found out that 4 states have rejected receiving any federal funding for their schools , because the federally mandated abstinence-only was contrary to their safe-sex and AIDS prevention program. Those brave states are New Jersey, California, Maine, and Pennsylvania. The rest of the states are whiny little cowards, as far as I'm concerned!"

lakelady said: "My youngest son's school (he's 14, and a high school freshman) gives p.e. credits for sports activities, but only if they are connected with the school. Also P E is connected to the required health classes, so it's hard to separate the credits. The health classes make me mad because they are two-semester classes and I think that time could be better put to use with academics, or maybe in the weight room. He had 'health' in middle school and elementary school too. How many ways are there to say, "don't do drugs, don't drink, don't eat too much junk, and don't have sex"? (our state, sadly, mandates 'abstinence-only' sex-ed) He has been on a city LaCrosse team for 2 years and is very active in gymkhana. I'd love it if that could get him out of health class and into something more productive!"
