Choosing a C-Section might triple you baby's chance of death

Heather said: "I hadn't heard this either. I wonder why the first 28 days are so different for babies delivered using a C-section?"

Heather said: "Thanks for the explanation, fallen. (As you can probably tell, I havent had kids yet!) It makes a lot of sense when you put it like that. I wonder if the same dangers exist for babies that are carried to term and delivered by C-section?"

cvalh said: "You know, the other thing about c-sections is they're more "dangerous" for the mom. Many people don't think so - but natural childbirth is just that: "natural." It might hurt more at the time, but it doesn't involve majorly invasive surgery and it doesn't HAVE to involve serious drugs. Now, I'm not against C-sections, I do think they have their place, but people are forgetting that they ARE surgery. And most people seem to think that they can be up and doing whatever they want shortly afterwards, but there IS supposed to be a fairly significant recovery time, as from any major abdominal surgery."

Women can schedule the c-section 3 weeks before their due date so the baby is smaller when it's born, thus reducing stretch marks on their tummies. I'm thinking that's why the babies are having more problems...they aren't fully mature yet. Yet another case of people being selfish and stupid and not caring about their children :P"

LEBZTA said: "UNBELIEVABLE!! I had not heard that. How ridiculous!"

Creaton Diva said: "Omg! I didn't know getting a C-section could make your Child Life suffer:eek: Thanks for telling me this very valuale information. But what about the ppl who have problems such as Gestational Diabetes and High Blood Pressure Heart problems what are they suppose to do? I think ppl need to do whatever they have to do to save their life and if its going to risk the babies lifesake than they need to take it if the Doctor thinks its in their Best Interest."

angel_rising said: "the first 28 days are so differnt becuase most of the elective c-sections are done at 37 weeks instead of 40, so the first 21 days were sopose to be spent in the womb finishing developing. My baby was born spontaniosly at 38 weeks and he had to spend 2 days in the NICU becuase of complications that they said would not have happended if he finished off his last 2 weeks. Angel"

angel_rising said: "The article is refering to the people who chose to have c-sections even though there is no medical need for them. In instences where the baby is in distress, such as Creation Diva mentioned, it maybe safer to go with a c-section. The best thing to do is to talk with your doctor about the risk of your specific pregnacy. They are all different, with different risk, so all delieveries should be considered on a case to case basis. Angel"

lakelady said: "OMG is right! My last pregnancy ended with a c-section because I had a placental abrubtion. An emergency c-section saved my baby's (now 14) life! he was about 5 weeks early, and weighed only 5lbs., 4oz., (my first son weighed exactly TWICE that!), but otherwise perfectly healthy. We left the hospital together less than 48 hours later. I didn't know that his chances of death were tripled. I'd have never let him out of my sight! My husband teases me because I never even let the kids in the Jacuzzi alone until they were 8 years old, even though they all had swimming lessons from birth, beginning with water babies at the 'Y' (hey, we live on a lake). here's the thing, though, I've had this surgery now. I can't imagine anyone choosing to have it! It's not fun. IThose staples up your belly itch, walking is painful, I don't know how I would've managed all that and a new baby too, if I hadn't had the older kids to help! (there's nearly 16 years between the births of my eldest, and my youngest!) Why on earth would anyone go through that voluntarily! My mom had 3 c-sections, all necessary. I had new respect for her after mine!"
