Life Beyond Cats

cvalh said: "So, I've not been around because I've been super busy. Graduated from college on May 15. Left for South Africa 2 days later, got back to Rhode Island on June 1. Have been cat sitting and unsuccessfully job-hunting ever since. Sounds less busy than it was, but this job-hunt thing is kicking my butt. I've had a number of "you were our second choice, sorry." The weight hasn't come down, but it hasn't gone back up either. I just need to get back into the swing of things."

I mean, yes, there were poorer settlements, and yes, there were lots of different languages, and yes, the demographics were different... and yes, they drove on the other side of the rode. BUT... In all, society felt very similar to the USA. Which I suppose makes sense, in that they frequently try to emulate us in terms of democratic and economic growth, but it was sort of weird. The coolest thing ever, though, was that I got to go on a day-safari. We saw all of the Big 5 (although the lions were so far away, it was more like 4 and a half). The main places we went to were Johannesburg (and the townships of Soweto and Alexandra), Kruger National Park, and Capetown (and it's township of Guguleto, as well as on down to the Cape of Good Hope). As for the job hunt... I'm applying to a job at a Classical Christian School teaching (hopefully) 7th and 8th grade science, out in Oklahoma. We'll see, but this is the most recent prospect."

I just interviewed for a different microbiologist position and I REALLY hope they hire me because the pay/benefits are desperately needed!! How was Africa? I've never been there but it's the next continent I want to visit."
