crunches
full situps
bicycles
toe touches (lying on your back, put your feet straight up in the air and reach towards your toes. be sure to focus on letting your abs do the work)
This will work out all of the muscles in your stomach, opposed to doing only crunches.
And you do need to make sure to do cardio also, because that is what burns the fat."
missred said: "Well, your sister is "more correct" that you. In order to burn off the belly fat covering the muscle, you must do cardio and work it off. You aren't totally wasting your time doing crunches because you do want to strengthen the muscle. However, everyone has a six-pack (actually I think it is 8) under that layer of fat that many of us have. You have to expose it fisrt. Now, doing 500 crunches is somewhat a waste of time. Crunches alone are not only boring, but only training the muscle in one way. The abs are divided into groups, you need to target each group, such as the lower, the obliques, ect. There are many exercises besides crunches that do the trick, and you don't have to to do 500 of them. You wouldn't do 500 bicep curls to work the arm, would you? You also wouldn't do just one arm exercise to work the arm either."
missred said: "That is the other element I forgot to mention, so thanks, Razor! You must eat well too, in addition to working out and strength-training. There are so many great ways to work the abs and not get bored. (I can't imagine doing that many crunches and nothing else...boring and something to dread for sure!)
The site that Fit Kid posted has many of the ones that I like to do, but there are even more. So let me see what I can find for you too."

I tell her that doing crunches will harden my tummy and build muscle, and while muscle is built, fat burns. Can somebody please clear this up for me? Who is right and any more info is appreciated. Also, does anybody know how much calories on estimate I will burn if I do 500 crunches in a row, a minute between each 100? I am five foot two inches and I weigh 150 pounds. Please help!!! Thank u all in advance!!!"

IN ADDITION TO CARDIO AND HEALTHY DIET (obviously) I recommend: Doing regular old crunches (people tell you they don't work, I say try it and decide for yourself ;) and get one of those ab balls -- For years I did 3-400 crunches a day effortlessly, I got on one of those one day...20 crunches and I thought I'd die. Something about using your core muscles to keep stability while doing the crunches--I don't know how it works, but such an awesome addition to any ab routine. (10 bucks at WalMart). Also doing side bends with weights (8-10lbs in each hand) and doing leg lifts (kinda reverse crunches, instead of picking your head up you lay flat and lower your legs without touching the floor, it's a killer, I never could do it well -- but even attempting provided results) There are so many ab workouts out there, pick a few that really hurt--that's a sure way to see results :D"
