Pop being Nixed in schoolsPop being Nixed in schools
jewly said: "Over here in Australia they government has recently introduced legislation to make school tuckshops more healthy. Most children over here take their own lunch and usually only have tuckshop maybe once a week if that. They've removed all potato chips and lollies but are still selling softdrink (pop) but I think eventually this will change and will only serve fruit juices."

Distributors of soda pop are not going to sell sugar and high calorie soda in elementary and secondary schools.
Diet sodas will be the only type available to high school students.

I think this is a very smart idea for schools, children and parents.
No need for that stuff in schools really.."
Heather said: "I think I remember hearing somewhere that most school lunches are prepared by outsourced companies and brought in daily.
School lunches have changed a lot since I was there.. They used to cost .75 per lunch. I know that can't even be close to what lunches cost today.."

UniqueMystique said: "The schools here took sodas out a few years ago. They added Powerade and Gatorade though...which is just as bad if you aren't a super active person. At least they recently added the Powerade Options which are lower calorie and sugar.
Now...if we could just get them to do something about all the processed foods they serve........"
UniqueMystique said: "I think that the school lunches here are about $1.35. My daughter started carrying her lunch a few months into the school year. She said that the food was gross and that there were very few things that she liked. She might eat in the snack bar once every two months. She tends to get a slice of pizza, a pickle, and a PowerAde Option (because she doesn't like fruit punch, white milk, or the PowerAdes & Gatorades).
When she takes her lunch (which she prepares herself) she takes a half of a sandwich, either Peanut Butter or turkey made with Iron Kids bread....carrot sticks....an apple....and a bottle of water. On a rare occasion, she may take a small bag of chips."
UniqueMystique said: "We never had pop machines in school either. Not even outside the cafeteria. Our choices were, white milk, low fat chocolate milk, & skim milk....nothing else. If you wanted water...you had to drink all of your milk and fill your container from the water fountain.
We were not allowed to waste food either. If you got it...you had to eat it. I remember a kid mixing all of her food up on her plate and then she poured her chocolate milk on top of it. The principal made her sit there until she ate every bite.
The food from my lunch line was a heck of a lot healthier than the food that is offered in my daughter's. In high school...we even had a great salad bar. Nothing but veggies and fruits....no prepared salads. I've tried to eat lunch with my daughter a few times over the years and it's just tough to swallow. Now...if I go and eat lunch with her...I bring something in for us."

That would be too easy."

To make it even worse, you could buy food at any time in the "commons" because our school had a policy where you could have your study hall there and eat while you did homework. They sold pizza, fries, packaged/processed things, donuts, Gatorade, etc., during study halls and then those things plus subs, burgers, soup, etc. for lunch. They'd have fruit too, but it was usually past its prime and no one bought it. We also had potato bar day where you could buy a potato and then select from tons of horrible toppings...chili, melted cheese stuff, butter, sour cream, etc. Yeah, our school wasn't exactly the healthiest place to eat. Most of the time I'd bring a lunch from home, but sometimes I'd have to eat the school's stuff.
In grade school it was a little better. We had prepackaged meals that you could buy that were fairly nutritious (sometimes), but they were pricey and my dad usually made us pack a lunch and we'd only get school lunch on the days where they were serving something good.
I definitely think they should take the soda out of schools. But they also need to get rid of the processed foods and offer healthier options. Maybe in the high schools they could post nutritional data for the foods so kids could make more educated decisions on what they were eating."

Most of our foods are fried . . they have a few sandwhiches and stuff and salads which I guess are ok, but I don't really know for sure as I never buy lunch because its way to expensive and just bad for you. They got rid of soft drinks in our lunch room too, but they still have them by the gym . . .which you can eaisly walk to from the lunch room. They use to have the 20oz bottles but they switched them to cans. Its a rip off though, for a 12 oz can of coke its like 85 cents or something like that, same with the mini powerade bottles, use to be 85 cents for the big one, now they are 1 dollar for the tiny little ones. Thats all in one years time that it has changed.
The school is trying to get better, I think they said by 08 or 09 they will no longer serve any fried foods, so all the chicken and other stuff they fry will be baked I guess. And they are adding vending machines with milk and minute maid in them. so they are trying to get healthier i guess"
shy_doll said: "That's a really positive change they're making :) We had access to pop in highschool and I think a fairly high majority of us drank it instead of milk. My nieces highschool sometime last year started putting fresh fruit out for the students. She says its in the classroom and office areas in a bowl...the students are allowed to eat a piece whenever they feel like it...pretty darn neat in my opinion."
Kat_the_Amazon said: "When i was a kid, they only served regular or chocolate milk (in those neat little pouches), juice and water. When i got into high school, they had a soda machine and a snack machine in the gym, but it really was only used after the last bell."
At-War-With-Myself said: "Last year(my senior year) my school was in its first year. of the healthy thing all schools seem to be doing... fresh-junior year we could get a huge boat of french fries and pizza for 2.50 and cookies for free on the side.. and buy a 20oz bottle for a dollar. My senior year.. they had no fries every again..lol we had chicken sandwiches.. and sometimes burritos.. but it made no sense as har as beverages..they kept the pop machines and added a milk machine.. which served 20 oz bottles of hersheys cookies n cream milk..like 480 calories.. and 8 grams of fat.. when you woudl be better off to get a pepsi.. LOL atleast there trying.."
klynnfosh said: "I think it is finally time they did something, when I was in school we didn't have soda available to us. Milk or water only! The only soda machine was outside the gym and we could only use it after school. Our school always prepared there food daily and most school here still do, I know several ladies who work in the lunch room as they say. Most of their meals are the right portion sizes but they usually do allow sweets everyday which is hard for the teen to say no to, when trying to eat healthy. But I think it is great that they are making changes to help ward off the obesity in our teen population, because the trend to be overweight is at such large percentages right now."
missred said: "My daughter's lunches cost $1.75 for junk! They get pizxza, burgers or other sandwich-type things everyday (5 choices total). Each grade level, the lunches cost more also. They serve just white and chocolate, and the chocolate is lower fat than the white! Go figure! She takes a lunch often, other wise she would eat pizza everyday! No candy is to be served in the school except for chocolate (b/c chocolate has some trace nutritional value), so no cookies or cupcakes at parties (which is fine by me!) It is just all ridiculous! And I don't understand why water can't be an option. I know that students do not drink enough water while at school."
