Calories etc...

SuperWmn said: "So, I am doing the weight loss thing the old fashioned way. ie, cardio and weight training. But lately I have been keeping track of how many calories I have been eating and burning. Personally, I thought the low fat, and low carb diets are somewhat of a fad?? I would hate to do something like Atkins, lose all the weight only to get it all back. I have heard the same thing happen to people with Herbal Magic. So I'm hoping that if I do it this way, I can continue to do this for the rest of my life... Anyways how do you really track calories to lose weight?? Are you supposed to eat less calories and burn more?? I haven't been trying to eat as low calorie as possible, I have just been making healthier choices. I was just wondering what the formula is for in vs out calories and how you burn a pound?"

Low calories usually means around 1200-1500 cals per day, and no lower than 1000. One pound is equal to 3500 calories, but you have to remember that most people burn at least 1500 (often more) calories a day just at rest. By adding additional exercize (make sure to do some cardio, not just weight training), you start to lose weight. Weight training is great, because muscle burns more calories than fat, but if you do weight train, ignore the scale to some extent. Muscle also WEIGHS more than fat! And, like I said before, cardio stuff is super important to burning calories."

Just some food for thought :D Also, your personal daily calorie needs will vary depending on your age/sex/height/weight/body composition/activity level. Before I started to lose weight I had a body composition test done (I was 29% fat) My doctor told me that I needed to eat about 1700 Calories/day to lose weight because I am active. Now that I'm at my "goal" weight/body composition (I weigh 119 and am only 13% fat...which is almost TOO low of body fat, actually), I can eat about 2000 Calories a day and not gain, because I'm fairly lean :) Hope this helps you! Keep up the good work, you can do it!!"

I know a woman personally that weighs in about 125 lbs with 12% bodyfat and she competes. To maintain that muscle mass she eats 2500 calories a day. Super, You are not doing it the old fashioned way, you are doing it the right way! People go through all these things and they just come back and need to lose the weight again. We all know what we can eat and what we can't eat. I mean if someone makes us choose which is healthier a big mac or a piece of grilled chicken we know which one to pick! So make healthy choices you know deep down what they are. Have treats and crap every once in a while do not restrict yourself, if you stay active a cookie every now and then will not hurt you. We have crap at work all the time and I never eat it. The other day I cut me a big piece of birthday cake and everyone looked at me like I was crazy. I said hey I am good every other day and I have not had a sweet in a month so I let myself go. I jumped right back on track after that piece though. In another month or so I will get a craving for some ice cream and go out and get some. If you go to a party tomorrow and they have some truffles out, then eat 1 or 2. Do not eat 8 but moderation is okay! Keep on those weights and cardio! Make healthy food choices eat 5 to 6 small meals a day do cardio lift weights be patient weight gone!"
