Tummy Trouble...Tummy Trouble...

The best way to lose that belly fat is simply to lose more weight. To do that I would increase the number of calories you burn- by exercising more- but more importantly but changing what you eat. Try to eat more fruits, vegetables, fish, and lean meats and less cakes, candy, cheese, red meat, etc.
I would not worry about cortisol. While it is true that patients with a pituitary or adrenal cortical tumor with supranormal levels of cortisol have an altered fat pattern, the pattern they have is not one of simply having a big belly. For example, they have a prominent "buffalo hump" of fat over the upper back. There is simply no evidence- for a person without a cortisol-secreting tumor- that trying to alter your cortisol level will reduce your belly fat.

Take a hot bubble bath, read something, light candles, use aromatherapy, etc., once a day to keep cortisol levels down. Other than that, there's not much else you can do to specifically target cortisol. And by all means, if you can do short intense workouts, try doing interval workouts on the treadmill or outside...run very fast for 1-2 minutes and do 2 minute recovery periods. In 20-30 minutes you will definitely feel the burn!"

I have a sleep disorder that prevents me from exercising too vigorously (otherwise I'm exhausted for days afterward). I've lost 13 pounds by changing my diet, but I've lost the weight from my butt and legs - not my tummy area which is where I need to lose it the most. A friend whose a nursing student was telling me all about the hormone cortisol which is probably why I'm hanging on to the weight there. Any suggestions? I'm good for short, less intense workouts. I've got a ways to go to reach my goal and I'm starting to lose my patience more often than I'm losing weight!!"
