Question For the ladies...Gents...you've been warnedQuestion For the ladies...Gents...you've been warned
UniqueMystique said: "I've always gained on pills and it seems a bit harder to lose the weight when I'm on them. Although I can't say that it's just the pills....eating habits helped contribute to the weight too. I think that pills are a factor....but not a huge one. If you're conscious about your eating habits and exercise habits....you should do fine and be able to shed some pounds. :)
Hey Sassy! We're on the same thing! I haven't had any break through bleeding either and I'm going on over a year on them. I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Mircette before these and I had breakthrough bleeding often which sucked because I was still having a monthly period too. I read a few days ago that a new pill is coming out this month that allows for a period only once a year."
UniqueMystique said: "I'm not sure if this is something that you'd be up for....but my dad substituted sunflower seeds in the shells for cigarrettes to curb the hand to mouth habit. He really didn't eat that many seeds because he was working to shell them....but it kept his hands and mouth occupied and he soon forgot about smoking."

If it is a big problem, try getting your doctor to switch you to a lower dose or one with a different form of progesterone. It may help. Good luck :)"
spectrachic311 said: "I have heard about that new pill that only gives you one period a year. To me, that sounds just a little bit unhealthy. I mean, I hate having mine, but I don't think we should suppress it to that extent. I know I've used my B/C to skip a period sometimes when I didn't want to get it (all you do is skip the placebo week and start the active pills right away again), but I don't think it's a great idea to have one period a year. Just my 2 cents worth...I don't know if screwing with your hormones so much is always the best thing to do."
spectrachic311 said: "I know it's not terrible to not have a period and I do know about the link to decreased ovarian cancer. Any form of B/C will reduce the risk of ovarian cancer since you aren't ovulating on it. But not having a period just seems sort of sexist or something to me...like we should be more like men and not have to deal with it. I'm not saying it's wrong to go on the Seasonale if that's what you want, but I'd just rather have my period every month to be, you know, positive that I'm not pregnant. :)"
Sassysurfnic said: "Hello there-
I just started Seasonal, the BC that you only get your period 4 times a year. My doctor put me on it instead of upping my pain medication even more (I have Dimenorehhea SP?). I have been on it about a month now and the only side effect I have had has been tender breasts, but I noticed that it isn't so bad now. I can't really comment on the weight part because I have gone off my diet and haven't exercised in 2 weeks because of the family gatherings and holidays and crazy scheduels, so I kow I put on some weight because of that. I know that one of the side effects of it is supposed to be break through bleeding which I haven't had (which I'm glad cuz that would annoy me!). In general though, I believe with most birth controls, you could gain anywhere from 5-10 lbs. That's what I heard, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Ok all, TTFN

Cosmopolitan said: "I used to be on birth control (B/C) but not because I needed the pregnancy prevention part of it. Because I had irregular cycles and horribly painful cramps that would cause me to miss out on school and life, so my doctor put me on it to get it back under control. So yes, one can be on B/C without needed it for it's traditional uses.
However, your doctor will have to prescribe it for you. And it is good to know that all B/C medications have side effects. Some of which include possible weight gain, blood clots (espically in women over 35 or those who smoke), nausea, headaches, dizziness, breast tenderness, and mood changes.
Some of the additional benefits offered by B/C include lighter and predictable periods, reduced cramps, reduce acne, and can even protect against some forms of breast disease, anemia, ovarian cysts, and uterine cancer.
Hurray B/C"

my ex was on ortho tri, and she put on around 10 pounds when she went on it. it was more like she swelled up rather than put on the weight. (water weight?)
anyways, just thought i'd mention it

Sarah_B said: "Hi Ladies! I have kinda a lady question. Have any of you experenced a weight gain due to going on birth control? I have gained 10lbs since I started BC. I recently switched types...the patch isn't all it's cracked up to be. My doctor said this was typical, but I was wondering how typical and what the average gain was.
Also, I gained another 5lbs on top of that when I quit smoking. I"ve been smoke free since October! :D So 15 lbs total with those two combined. I'm almost tempted to start smoking again and stop taking BC so I can lose that 15lbs...lol! No, I'm kidding...but gee...are these pounds sheadable??"
Sarah_B said: "Thanks for the advice! I had my doctor switch my BC to Ortho-Tricyclene (SP?). I was on the patch, and it just didn't work for me. It's supposed to stay stuck, but it didn't. Towards the end it's use, it would fall off in the shower, ect, so I decided to change it. I know quitting smoking has a lot to do with it. Nicotene has an appitite suppressant in it...plus, I can taste foods a lot better now. I find that the hand to mouth habit is the hardest to break. I smoked for 13 years, and old habits are hard to break. But, I decided everytime I feel hungry out of bordem (I'm a bordeom eater) or hand to mouth habit, I'm going to do 15 pushups and 15 situps. See if that helps. Thanks for your advice...it was well apperciated! :)"

There have been some studies that prove that having your period less can help prevent ovarian cancer. I used to think the same way, but then i took a Women Gender Studies class and learned about that. Also, back in the day (like waaay back- i should say before modern medicine) most women were usually preggers and therefore generally only had their period once or twice a year. *shrugs* i'm not a scientist, but it makes for an interesting case!
Also i've been on Yasmin for about 4 years now. The only weight gain i have seen is from my negligence."
