Loose Skin!

natefan87 said: "Hey everyone, im new here. My name is Nathan, and i'm 18. Well...i had decided when i was 17 to lose some weight because i had weighed 250 pounds and i was sick of being fat. SO i joined weight watchers (WONDERFUL program btw) and i lost weight at about 3lbs a week on average. Of course the first two weeks it was like 6 lbs a week but that didnt last. Unfortunately, as i was losing weight, i didnt exercise at all. About last September, i decided to join a gym. Im trying so hard to firm up and get a nice body and get in shape, but im really scared that my love handles, and some areas on me are going to be left with saggy, loose skin. Im currenly 18, and weigh 188 and i go to the gym regularly. I lift weights and do an hour of intense cardio at least 4-5 times a week."

determinedtolose said: "I agree with the others....You are young and your skin has much more elasticity than older people. Stick to the cardio that you are doing and you may want to ask a trainer at your gym to show you some exercises that target the areas you are trying to get rid of. Great job on the weight loss! Welcome aboard too!!!"

natefan87 said: "hey...thanks for all the words of encouragement. I do lift weights...but im not at the "free weights" stage yet, i use the machines. And when i use the elliptical i add alot of resistance to it. And as far as abs go, i usually sit on the platform they have (or a medical/pilates ball) and do them that way. And for my lower back i do a reverse crunch, and for my love handles i do side crunches with a ball. Hopefully im not a lost cause lol."

natefan87 said: "
What's a reverse crunch???
lol its so hard to explain...but at my gym theres a machine where all it is is this padded "thing" that sticks up and u bend over it, then u just lift ur torso so ur working out ur lower back instead of ur abs."

UniqueMystique said: "Great Job, Nate.....very impressive! Since you're at the gym a lot.....use the ab machines. Don't sit in the machine facing forward....turn your knees facing the side with your upper body facing forward and do the crunches. Switch to the other side and repeat. This will help tone the muscles in that area and shouls help tighten up that skin too. :)"

doctoru2 said: "As others said, your youth is a good thing. Being so young, your skin has more elasticity and will "snap" back. To assist it, though, I recommend weight training along with cardio. A lot of people do diet and cardio and it works - they lose tons. However, some heavier people have lots of sagging skin that has to be surgically removed. But these people are usually VERY heavy - at 250 you may have been overweight, but nowhere near the size of those who'd have this problem. Doing weight training adds much needed muscle. Skin clings to muscle - so the more you have, the less sagging you'll have. Weight training will also add muscle which might actually increase your body weight. Don't let that bother you. Just remember that a well-toned and muscular 200 pound guy is a lot better off than a sagging-skinned 180 pound guy. ;) So throw in weight training for your chest, arms, back and stomach, if nothing else. Of course, to even it out, you should also do legs too. Good luck!"

I use a BowFlex now and believe me, you'll feel it! I know some people swear by free weights, but I think those are best for the seriouis muscle body builder men and women, not for those trying to lose weight and/or get a toned body. Machines work great for that."

I still have a bit of loose skin, but really it's not that bad. Mostly it's around my tummy area, but it has gone back very well. I still have a washboard tummy even with the skin there, so it isn't terrible. I was 19 when I lost my weight and I'm 23 now, so I also had the "young body" benefits. I found that doing cardio and ab strengthening exercises helped a lot. Good luck to you :D"
