Yum said: "Now, as I told you before, I am young and I am not fat, 14, 5'6 and a half inches 121 pounds. But I don't like my abs. So, if you don't have comcast OnDemand, GET IT! There are free workout videos there. I tried belly dancing, and I am totally seeing results immediately!! :p Then, I rollerblade for about five laps on my street. I am not sure how long that is, but it should be about a mile or 3/4 of a mile. I rollerblade FAST! Also, you don't have to do this, but I am a figure skater and skate vigorously about 5 times a week. Since I am a figure skater, I don't run because I have enough impact on my knees already.
So if your not obese, I would try this! Good luck!"
pixiechic said: "bellydancing looks like a lot of fun.
how often is it on?"
Yum said: "It is on all the time on comcast on demand but you have to have it. Go to the on demand button then to fitness and sports then fitness then dance then bellydancing for weight loss. i notice a difference!"
Yum said: "REVISED! I am actually 5'7 117 pounds! Wahoo"
Yum said: "You guys seriously!!! I am not that skinny. I might be 115 but I have a lot of visceral fat around my stomach that can cause heart disease. Also, I don't think fat people or people who are flabby can be beautiful. I want to be. So, I am gonna keep exercising!"
Yum said: "No, it really bothers me and I don't think you guys understand. My official weight on my crazy scale today was 117, but I think I am losing it from the "wrong (haha) areas.
In figure skating, you have to have a lot of endurance. A lot! A lot more than you would find in most other "sports."
I am trying to get healthy and strengthen my abdominal area so it can have long lasting strength. You might not believe this at my weight, but when I sit, my fat hangs--no--rolls out over my jeans. I hate it. That is my goal. To get where I can see the abdominal muscles. I am NOT starving myself. But I realized I was eating crap a lot. Now, I try to eat a lot more fruit and vegetables, and I read labels. I look at portions, too.
One time, last year, I had ZERO fat (well not really but my friend said I looked emaciated!!!?) everywhere except my stomach. Apparently, it was huge. My friend, not realizing how bad it would make me feel, said when her mom saw me at the pool she was like "Whoa!" Btw, my friend was born with a FLAT stomach!
I want to get to the point where I can sit without being embarrased. I also want to look GOOD in my bikini/tankini.
I don't know if this means losing weight or gaining muscle, or both."
Yum said: "Snappea, it's not ice skating. And I don't want to answer your blatant question (other poster)"
Yum said: "Yes that is! A dumbell set? Could be a good idea. My diet varies every day but I usually have tons of fruit and vegetables (I actually like them though!) one cup of coffee, a little bread and water. I have chicken for dinner, which is usually where the bread comes from from being wrapped in tortillas or whatnot. I drink water because I love it!"
Yum said: "No! I do ice skate. But I am competing in September :D Yay! Ice skating does not "make me crazy!"
I just went to the hair dresser and she said my hair is so shiny and healthy. I got 4 inches taken off! Eek! Anyway, I love figure skating! I tried that thing yesterday where you skate then pull your leg up behind you and greab your blade, like in a biellmen spin.
I eat protein!"
featherish said: "Sounds like your as skinny as one can be.
I hope that youaren't looking to lose more weight."
Heather said: "I think that everyone here just a little concerned for your well being.
Sometimes when you are on the outside looking in, you can see things a little clearer. Unique offered a lot of good advice. Not being able to see the beauty in yourself is what I would call a self image problem.
You need to love yourself no matter what your size is. Getting yourself sick will only cause heartbreak to people like your mom that love you and don't understand why you are doing it to yourself.
If you don't feel comfortable talking to your mother, maybe you have a grandparent or teacher that you could trust?"
Heather said: "I'm not going to argue about what is right here.
I think you're making a terrible mistake.
Does your mom know that it's the ice skating making you think crazy?"
Heather said: "
Snappea, it's not ice skating. And I don't want to answer your blatant question (other poster)
She isn't ice skating. She made that pretty clear.
Maybe this isn't the right place for this young lady?"
Heather said: "I guess I don't understand what she is thinking. Many girls would love to be in here pant size.
I don't blame you for feeling offended. I have read many of your posts and think that you are a great member here. You are always quick to give a word of advice or a cheery thought. I apologize on behalf of her.."
Heather said: "I think that maybe her "goals" weren't in line with what this board promotes.
I don't think that anyone here wants to be held accountable for the choices that this young lady makes.."
Cupcake said: "I'd have to agree with you Unique."
Cupcake said: "
Maybe this isn't the right place for this young lady?
Unfortunately, I think you might be right Snappea."
Darren said: "Good luck to you, too."
cvalh said: "Both Snappea and Unique have made some good points. As far as heart disease is concerned... Yes, fat in the belly can effect it. But the fat that has the biggest impact on heart disease is stuff you never really see, that forms around your organs. If you have a little jiggle in your belly (and I find it difficult to believe that there's a LOT there, at your weight), it's not going to kill you. Being severely underweight could, if you let it get to that point.
On another note... Is Catherine Zeta Jones beautiful? Is Jennifer Lopez beautiful? Many people would say yes. While neither of these women are particularly large, they both have curves. Sometimes curves are what MAKE women beautiful! Don't hate yourself - what you see in your belly now might eventually give you that hourglass figure that many women crave."
cvalh said: "This has gotten crazy. I too was offended by the "fat people can't be beautiful," and Yum, people are concerned. If people are concerned, look at WHY, rather than getting mad and denying everything. All that does is validate our concerns."
UniqueMystique said: "Heather.....I'm concerned about this one. :("
UniqueMystique said: "14 and worried about heart disease? *Shakes head*
Yum......Since you are in puberty.......I'm gonna ask a personal and direct question here. Have you started having your period yet...and if you have...how long have you had it and does it occur on a monthly basis?
During puberty...the female body goes through natural changes. One of those is storing 'some' fat in areas to protect during pregnancy. ALL females go through this change.
Also...at 14...you still have a lot of growing to do. The female body stops growing around the age of 22. Your body could just be adjusting for a major growth spurt that may be in your near future.
If you haven't started your period by the age of 14....your LACK of weight may be the culprit.
Please don't shrug those of us off that are concerned for your well being, Yum. Some of us are trained to recognize 'signs' and 'symptoms'. Not saying that you are but......you sound like you are in denial that you have a disorder. Here's a few reasons why......You can't check out diet books or videos because your mom won't allow you to because she thinks that you are anorexic (your words). You are obsessed with how you look. You do not think that being 5'7 and 120, 117, 116, 115 pounds (whichever weight is actually the truth)....is thin for a female your age. It's mighty thin! If you lose much more weight....your body will have no fat storage to feed itself off of and it will start eating away at your muscles and then your internal organs...causing them to eventually shut down. This can and will lead to death.
My advice to you is for you to be completely honest with your mom. Tell her that you seriously feel that you are fat in some areas and that you are not happy with how you look. Tell her that you'd like to handle this like a responsible adult would and get some nutritional and exercise advice from a doctor and a trained nutritionist."

Gee...I just love having questions blatantly ignored! Makes me think I'm right about things."
UniqueMystique said: "Somehow...I knew that you wouldn't want to answer.
Females with anorexia drop their body fat so low that their bodily functions shut down. One of these functions is the menstrual cycle. Most times....the cycle shuts down completely....other times its very sporadic and unpredictable.
Another symptom is dull, non-shiny hair that starts falling out.
You may want to be beautiful.....but if this is how you are going about it....it's not going to work!
BTW.....do you just ice skate....or are you a competitive skater?"
UniqueMystique said: "
Does your mom know that it's the ice skating making you think crazy?
SnapPea....I think the "No, it's not iceskating" was in reference to this question above that you asked. I could be wrong though.....LOL.
There may not be an eating disorder here yet.....but there's a huge potential for one if her mother or coach doesn't step in. Someone is in need of some serious counseling.
I took offense to the comment of hers that "Fat people aren't beautiful". I do not have low self esteem like that. While there are some things I'd like to change....I've never thought of myself as 'not' pretty. Most people with the classic eating disorders have a poor self image.
You must love yourself before you can love another adequately."
UniqueMystique said: "Well....she is only 14....and I remember what being 14 is like! It's a terribly confusing and hard time. Add the stress of being in a highly competitve sport and you have all the makings for an eating disorder.
No one is going to bring me down by making comments about my weight or how I look. I like me and I'm doing what I need to do to get my weight under control. I've rarely lacked confidence in anything.
Thanks for the kind words out me, SnapPea. It's nice to be noticed for something good. You are quite the motivator, as well.....and you're always so kind with your advice. In fact...there are a great many here that are just plain wonderful people. This is a great forum!
I think I'm through offering advice on this thread though. It's starting to get stressful and it's not going to help the situation at all, I fear. I can only hope that 'history' files are checked at someone's home."

You can click there to say whether you like or dislike a member's post. I could be wrong though...but it makes sense."

it definately gives some insight to this conversation.
Also, I was in the same boat as Yum when I was 14. I am 5'7 and weighed 105 lbs at one point. I have to say I look tons better a little overweight than underweight.
Yum, I think you should be spending your teen years doing fun things rather than obsessing over a few pounds that you would probably be better off keeping."
spectrachic311 said: "Yum, based on what you eat in a day, do you think maybe you are not getting enough protein? Lack of protein in the diet causes abdominal bloating (this is one reason why third-world country people have the bloated bellies; they get the majority of what calories they DO get in the form of rice or some other starch). I know where you are coming from and I think maybe some of the other members on here might be right. You said that fat people are not beautiful. I disagree. I have always thought of myself as a beautiful woman, even when I weighed 190 lbs. That kind of confidence pushed me to become healthier and thinner. I got into competitive running which really morphed my body and got me in incredible shape. I thought eating less would make me lose weight in my "problem areas" as well. And, like you, I lost more weight in the "wrong" places. I got my weight down to 106 lbs (I'm 5'4") so I wasn't quite in the danger zone yet, but my family really started to worry. And I worried too, because I stopped getting my period and I was constantly cold and tired. I was slowing down when I was running. And I turned into a total b1%^&. No one thought I was all that much more beautiful when I was like that. They thought I was skinny, yes. I was concerned, too, because I studied the effects of malnutrition in college. I was worried about getting a heart murmur. (If your body is sufficiently starved of protein for a long enough period of time, you will start to break down muscle and eventually, you will start to digest your own heart causing it to weaken). I'm not trying to scare you, Yum, but sometimes people need to know the reality.
I had to go to a special nutritionist who told me to eat more protein, eat more polyunsaturated fats, and to strength train. I gained about 10 lbs of probably a little fat and a little muscle. But now my abs are very defined and all of my body is in more proportion. I am not underweight nor am I overweight. I feel a lot better physically and emotionally. And I can focus on more important things in life. :o"
spectrachic311 said: "I saw that article in the magazine when it came out. Pretty interesting stuff. If you think you're a smokin' babe, other people will too. A lot of so-called "sexiness" is just self-confidence. Like I said before, I got down to what I thought was an unhealthy weight for my height. I didn't feel good a lot of the time and realized that I had a problem. Other people recognized that too and I was isolating myself socially. The more I isolated myself, the more other people didn't want to be around me and the less desirable I felt."
Razor said: "Yum,
Tell me exactly what you are eating throughout the day. Take a picture and post it here to show us the roll you are talking about, also take a picture of you standing to the side to show us. Is this what you want your abs to look like? If so then I can help! You need to save up some money and buy a dumbell set and turn off that Ondemand thing. As well as have a CLEAN diet."
nattie said: "I think the big thing is, who told you you were fat and ugly? Cause if you are saying that you are fat and ugly on your own and noone has ever told you that you need something more than just losing weight. If someone is telling you that you need to tell them where to go and get away from them. When I was little my dad's dad would tell me I was fat and needed to lose weight. Let me tell you that has a big impact on how you view yourself. I finally got to where I would not go over to see my grandparents cause it really bothered me and it wasnt just me it was my sisters too. Because of that there is not a day I look in the mirror and think I am beautiful. In fact more times then not I think I am ugly. I am starting to get to where I think I am pretty and in a big part because of my fiance. He says I am beautiful no matter how much I weight or what I have on. What you need to realize is that no matter how much you weight you are beautiful and you do not have to be a size 0 to be beautiful. One of my personal icons is Queen Latifa. She is gorgeous and she is not a skinny mini. You really should talk to your mom. She is probably really worried about you.
Oh and it is natural for women to have a little bit of fat on their lower tummy."
Holly said: "Ok, I don't want to mean, but when you said you're friend described you as "emaciated" everywhere except your tummy, it made me think of the poor little African children that are starving. They can go without a meal for weeks, but their little tummys get all bloated.
I don't know. I think you should put on your Easter outfit and not think about calories, fat, carbs, or even food at all. You've been strict with yourself all week. Relax and celebrate on Easter Sunday."
Holly said: "How do you get banned?"
lotusleaf said: "yum, at what point will you feel beautiful?? Im interested as this is a very subjective thing to go on, and just want you to be aware that this is how problems can start. Im a psychiatric nurse, and have looked after ladies and men who have said that to me when they have been lying in intensive care being fed through a tube in their stomachs. Im not saying this is going to happen to you, but your remark that overweight people cant be beautiful, and you are going to keep exercising until you are beautiful worries me. It might be an idea to think about the reasons why you think you arent beautiful already, and if your major concern is your weight, then i think you may need more support that you are aware. Please feel free to email me any time, as i have some great things i can send you to help you do this."

Qian said: "I have found that doing deep breathing and some simple calesthnics has really helped my abs. One of the things I like to do are twists. I bend my knees slightly, and twist back and forth, my arms swing loosly with the momentum. That really works by obliques. I do this numerous times a day, whenever i get tired or need a stretch, it's a great way to wake up and rejuvenate. Another ab excercise I like is the vacuum. It was popularized by body builder Frank Zane. Talk about some sweet abs. One of the few bodybuilders to keep a thin waist. If you can find pictures he was awesome. anyway, you breathe in deeply and slowly let it out until there is no air left, then suck your stomach like your trying to touch your back bone with the inside of your abs and flex. It really reaches those deep muscles and helps to straighten you out and trim down your waist. Awesome ab excercise."
Qian said: "I really don't know too much about this whole thing, but you might consider seeing a doctor, trainer, or nutritionist. They might be able to give you specific direction to best attack your problem. Just a suggestion."
Qian said: "Razor makes a good point. If someone can give you a good weight lifting routine, it would probably help a lot. Good luck"
Qian said: "Being a guy, I just want to say women with curves are very beautiful. It does all depend on how a person carries themselves and acts around others. IF they act like they are an attractive person, then they will be. If not, I don't think people will think they are ugly, but people will not notice them, and they will think that because of this they are unattractive.
This goes for guys and gals, I was always big through out highschool, and was very quiet, and introverted, and didn't really talk to alot of people. Needless to say, not alot of friends. My Senior year I opened up. I did more activities, talked to more people, and even did some Yell Leading (Throw cheerleaders around). I was more confident, more outgoing, and dated alot more.
Attractivness is definitly a mental thing. Hallelujah for confident curvy women :)"
