Thoughts on karate?

BigJoey said: "Karate can be a great and fun way to lose weight!"

pixiechic said: "sounds like a really good way to get the new year started. i don't know how much the uniforms are  i would think less than 100.00? keep us posted on how it goes!"

Fagan said: "Ballzy move. I took katrate when I was a kid. I member gettin' tossed around a lot."

QueenBee said: "That is pretty brave of you! Hope you are feeling better :)"

determinedtolose said: "Keep it up and have fun!"

pixiechic said: "
Thanks for the well wishes! My next class is tommorrow morning at 11:00. I figured out why my shoulders hurt, they are bruised!
ouch! i never heard of that happening before "

QueenBee said: "Is it still fun?"

strawberryjams said: "Hi Snap pea, Congrats on the Karate. I've been wanting to do it for sometime. I have a couple of questions. Do you take an adults only class or are you in class with children too? If so, do you feel comfortable? Do you have to spar with anyone or are you still just learning the moves. I want to learn, I'm just not so excited about the getting hit part. Also, I weigh significantly more than you do...so I've been very hesitant to join until I lose more. How much is weight a hinderance in a class like yours? Thanks and continue kickin' butt (so to speak)"

USEDtobetiny said: "Hey Snap Pea, that's really cool that you're trying new things! Good for you! I want to try kickboxing, did you like it and why did you stop?"

believe said: "Something I thought about before. My sister and nephews have in the past. When they were younger my sister and oldest nephew got as far as brown belts, one away form black belt. I bought these videos off the tv one day. I saw a infomerical on kung fu aroebics. Let me tell you the introduction tape explaining some of the basic moves which is about 30 minutes long, is a workout in itself. Then there is the basic moves tape for self defense and fighting, then there is a kung fu aroebic workout that Is soooo....... hard I ended up giving it one of my neices who is more fit than me. It was the one tape that I wished I could of done.Oh well, when I get more in shape and loose more weight, after having exercised for awhile I can always borrow or record it and make a copy for my self. Good luck I think its great and something worthwhile. :)"

Julienne said: "That sounds pretty cool, SnapPea. I'll bet it is a challenge. You have more courage than I do! Have you noticed any difference since you started?"

Yum said: "I did Tae Kwon Do and outfits were moderately priced at $40, and then $40 to test."

rockprincessFF said: "OMGosh I love karate! It's uber fun! LOL :)"

featherish said: "It's a great thing. Plus, it helps you learn self-defense, which can come in handy."

featherish said: "That was a very sad story indeed. One of those cases where "it hasn't happened to me before". Being able to defend herself could have been the difference of life and death. A couple of karate moves could have at least scared the guy away. A couple of bruised shoulders is nothing compared to the loss of your life, SnapPea.."

Heather said: "I am going to start taking a Karate class this Saturday. Not only will it be a great workout, it will give me some self defense skills as well. I have done kickboxing classes before, but never karate. Is it harder than kickboxing? Thanks in advance!"

Heather said: "Thanks for the info, guys! I'm getting pretty excited about the first class. It is this Saturday. (I can see the kids laughing already, LOL) Do you know if the Uniforms are expensive to buy?"

Heather said: "I had my first class this morning, it was a lot of fun! I already learned a few thing that I can do if I ever got attacked, I could use. My shoulders and arms are starting to feel it already! Doing punches isn't the same as lifting free weights, I will say that much!"

Heather said: "I thought it was a lot of fun. My shoulders and legs are a little bit sore this morning, but I guess on the bright side, they are muscles that have been reactivated. I am going to another 2 hour class tommorrow! I figure there is no way this extra weight can hang on if I force it off."

Heather said: "
:) Sounds fun....
It should be. What do you do for fun?"

Heather said: "That happens, Fagan. My third class is tonight at 6. My shoulders are sort of sore, I've been trying to stretch them out all day.. I am going to do my best to do the whole thing (2 hours) we'll see."

Heather said: "I have 4 classes under my belt, and boy, am I feeling it. I knew I was going to be in store for a bit a pain, so it isn't like I didn't expect it. It's sort of cool really. There are muscles I never knew I had :)"

Heather said: "
Keep it up and have fun!
Thanks for the well wishes! My next class is tommorrow morning at 11:00. I figured out why my shoulders hurt, they are bruised!"

Heather said: "The class that I am taking is a lot harder than most karate classes. On the other hand, it is really challenging and I like it. The reason I want to continue with this is because I want to be able to defend myself against bad people if I am ever faced with it. I went to a website run by the sheriffs in our state, and there are about 15 registered sex offenders that live in my city. If you look by county, multiply it by 10. I am going to do my level best to make sure that I am not a victim of any of these people. This morning on Fox News, they have a video surveillance tape of a 19 year old girl getting kidnapped (in her own car) as she was leaving after her shift at Wal-Mart last night in Texas. Hopefully they will be able to find her safe and sound.."

Heather said: "The bruises were caused because I wasn't doing it right. I have a class again at 6pm tonight, and I'm feeling a lot better today. I did cartwheels for the first time in about 20 years in Saturdays class. They made me dizzy. But I almost felt like a kid again, too!"

Heather said: "Yes it is! I had to miss class on Saturday, but I think a little break has got me back to feeling 100%. At least until class at 6 o'clock tonight! Everyone there is really cool and helps you, and every class is 2 hours long so by the end of it you have worked a lot of different muscles. I'm sure it would be a lot easier if I were younger, but I can't let that hold me back. You can teach an old dog new tricks! LOL."

How much is weight a hinderance in a class like yours? Thanks and continue kickin' butt (so to speak)
Hi StrawberryJ! Thanks for the well wishes :) My husband and I talked about taking some martial arts training for a while and I'm glad that we did. The Dojo (school/ training center) that we go to is pretty small. It isn't a big "out of the box" training center that caters to young kids. I had the same concerns as you, getting my glasses broken, my butt kicked and being laughed at, but none of this has happened. Everyone there is very helpful and there is no sparring. It is more about training your body to evade and protect yourself in the event of a bad person attacking you. Instead you practice your footwork and work with the others in class to improve it. I don't think there is any weight hinderance. You go in and do what you can do and build your skills. You have to attend 30 2 hour classes in order to test for your first belt, so there is a level of commitment needed to keep doing it. We were also able to attend a couple of classes for free before signing any contracts, so that was cool. Everything that you do there works muscles, but more intensely than a stationary bike. :)"

Heather said: "
Hey Snap Pea, that's really cool that you're trying new things! Good for you! I want to try kickboxing, did you like it and why did you stop?
Thanks! I feel like I'm building really strong muscles, and it is an "unconventional" thing for a 34 year old woman to do. I was never a cheerleader or highly athletic while I was in school, and sort of regret it. But it is never too late. I have found some muscles I never knew were there, and found that I am still able to do cartwheels! I did a backflip for the first time (ever) last night too. You never know what you are capable of doing if you don't try or push yourself a little."

Heather said: "I did a lot of kicks today, so I'm guessing that my legs are going to be sore, probably tommorrow morning. It's one of the most physically challenging things I have done in a while. I think this is going to pay off big time. :)"

Heather said: "Thanks for the info, Yum. I still have to purchase it.. How long have you been doing Tae Kwon Do?"

Heather said: "How long have you been doing it for, Rock?"

spunkymonkey said: "my boyfriends daughter takes Karate classes and she has alot of fun, from what i have seen for beginners they arent too hard however there are a few things they do that if you are flexible they will be easier."

Elaine said: "
Hopefully they will be able to find her safe and sound..
They found her, but she wasn't Okay. What a sad story. You wonder why someone didn't make that guy leave? Pepper spray may have even helped her. It does make you think about being able to defend yourself. I always make sure I remember exactly where I parked, and I have my keys in my hand. Always be careful, girls!"

Elaine said: "I hope that you are feeling better. Are you still enjoying the class?"

Darren said: "Not only will you be lose weight, but you'll be able to whip people's asses, too. That's great for your confidence."

Darren said: "There's no doubt it could help. Did you see what happened to that girl at the WalMart in Texas? It pays to be able to protect yourself."

Darren said: "Another reason to not be fat. So you can "haul ass" when the time comes."

Darren said: "Sounds like this is working out great for you. Keep up the good work!"

helplesscase said: "Well, I wouldn't know since i've never tried it."

helplesscase said: ":) Sounds fun...."

helplesscase said: "Cool......:)"
