Concerns with Southern Cooking

determinedtolose said: "I was watching on the news this morining about southern cooking and diets...they were calling it the "stroke belt" due to all the high cholesterol foods. Most of those are fried foods. I even seen where one restraunt served a huge cheeseburger served on a split fried krispy kream doughnut. They even served a foot long chili cheese dog with two fried eggs on it. It showed people gorging on these and really enjoying them. Can you imagine what the cals., fat, carbs. and sodium they are eating. :o I have a lot of family in the south and they do eat heavy fatty foods."

One of us chose to eat for a full 12 hour day a very healthy diet with fruit, veggies and lean chicken breast and I decided to eat the unhealthy. I ate eggs, sausage, toast, McDonalds, and a big steak dinner with all the butters, and sour creams and deserts to top it off. 45 min. after each meal they drew blood on each one of us. The amount of fat serum that was on top of each test tube was very different. My friend had between 1-3 mm. of fat on top and I had between 6-8 mm. of fat on top. After a while that all slowly hardens. No wonder people have to have bypass or die of coronary artery disease. :("

Elaine said: "All these years later they are finally confirming that Southern diets that have a lot of deep frying are cause for concern. Here is an article on it. The hamdog sounds like quite a lunch."

Elaine said: "The Hamdog (as described by article) "The Hamdog." The dish, a specialty of suburban bar Mulligan's, is a hot dog wrapped by a beef patty that's deep fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions and served in a hoagie bun. Oh yeah, it's also topped with a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries. That is breakfast, lunch and dinner served in a bun. I hate to see the fat content!"

Darren said: "As I get older, I really have lost my taste for things like "hamdogs". :)"

cvalh said: "One of the orgs at my school decided they were gonna have a competition between the guys and girls to see who could consume the most hamdogs... i didn't go, but i could just hear the arteries hardening :-P"

UniqueMystique said: "Hmmmm......here I am as close to being 'southern' as I can get and I've no freaking idea what a 'hamdog' is. Maybe we Texans call them something else....what is it exactly?"

UniqueMystique said: "GROSS!!!! *GAGS* People actually eat that?????"

This sandwich (called the "Fool's Gold Loaf") was made of a whole loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly, and a pound of bacon. The entire thing had 42,000 calories! Here's a link to it, if you guys need a good gross-out: http://www.thrillist.com/archives/2006/08/fools_gold_sandwich.html"

Everything they served was deep fried and just crap. The food tastes good but when I eat that stuff, I get so sick. It's too rich for me."

Diamond said: "I went to a couple of restaurants in Miami - One place we stopped at served nothing but deep fried seafood. It had a nice location on a canal, though. I think I ate about half of my meal and left the rest behind. Not bad once in a while, but not something I would want to eat everyday."
