pixiechic said: "congrats on quitting the cigarettes. now you can take the money you save from not buying cigarettes and use it for something else. your lungs are already starting to heal!"

Fagan said: "My friend quit smokin' and he gained a buncha weight. But the important part was that he quit. Smokin' is very bad for your health."

pixiechic said: "i did a little some research on cigarettes and here is some of the things i found out. cigarette smoke is a haze filled with toxic gases, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and nitrogen. it also has tar that contains over 4000 chemicals. the tobacco itself has pesticides (used when growing the leaf) and other chemicals to "enhance" for better burn or better taste. there is stuff called cadmium, lead, arsenic, cyanide and nickel. a chemical mixture for death  that costs a lot of money."

pixiechic said: "
.....in a small town (less than 30,000 people) and we have only two restaraunts that are smoke free. The town that I grew up in (more than 100,000) has only two restaraunts that allow smoking. Doesn't that seem a bit backwards????
i can see where bigger cities might be more concerned with air pollution and other environmental factors. if you have a bigger population of people, and industrial factors (like factories, auto emmissions, etc) the air pollution from second hand smoke makes all of these other pollutants even worse? a smaller city might not be quite as worried and a little more reluctant to change."

Julienne said: "It's weird that smoking was considered "cool" a while back ago. I guess that was long before were studies done to see how bad it really was for you."

pixiechic said: "
We've two major industrial facilities here.....odd for smalltownsville. I was never ever sick until I moved to this place. I'm quite certain that the industrial facilities have something to do with it cuz I can leave town and I feel just fine. :)
i know what you are talking about. i live in ohio and sometimes the fog/haze here is so bad you have to wonder about the quality of the air that you breathe. winter heater air really gets old after a while, too. no humidity makes for dry, stale heat all the time. (thank goodness it has been a little warmer the last couple of days, so i have gotten in a couple of walks lately. ) add in some second hand smoke and yuck."

pwyatt said: "I have a wonderful reason to quit smoking. I stopped in December of 1998 and have never smoked again. The week before, I figured up how much I would spend each month and it was nearly $250/month. I desparately needed a car and after looking at the money I was wasting, I went to my Credit Union, found a car and bought it. I was able to make my payment by not smoking. It's paid for now, and I actually have some savings! Pwyatt :)"

April said: "I have been smoke free for about a month now and it really hasnt been that hard but thats just me. Ive always been able to quit pretty easily. My problem is when Im socializing with alcohol. I just have to smoke. It sounds crazy but its like the two go together. But this time hopefully Ill be smoke free forever. I hate it when people that have never smoked lecture me. They say "smoking will kill you". Oh really? Gosh I didnt know that. Thanks for the info. Us smokers, believe it or not, do know that smoking kills. Its an addiction that is hard to understand if you have never smoked or never had any kind of addiction. I must say I do feel better already and I plan to continue to be smoke free..................April"

I got diagnosed with asthma and that was it. I was very done with the wheezing, colds, smell of ashtrays, nervousness etc. I smell smoke now on someone and I gag. I just made a date, cleaned out ashtrays, threw away lighters and just quit. I found for the first three days I was grouchy but it got easier and easier as I found vegies to crunch on, low cal candies, crocheting. My health is not contributed solely by smoking but it is a huge factor. I now can bike without a wheeze or coughing fit, I can play with my kids for longer than 10 minutes. You have to quit when you decide is right. Do not look back, and if you want another one, look in your journal and read the reasons you quit. I kept my last empty pack and put 3 main reasons to quit. 1. my kids and husband 2. my health 3. the 250$ I was saving and money now for enjoyment"

Henrietta said: "Everyone can quit. Just use "The Patch". It makes life easier."

Henrietta said: "The best reason to quit smoking is that "pesty" lung cancer you pick up from the habit."

Heather said: "A lot of cities are now working to get public places like restaurants and bars smoke free. I think that New York already has laws in place that make it illegal to "light up". That means that cars are going to be one of the few places that smokers have left to do it."

Heather said: "Those pictures are disgusting! Good negative publicity for the smokes.. Good work to you ladies that quit! And to those that haven't yet, the website mentioned by Cyn can give you an idea of what your "missing""

spunkymonkey said: "quitting is hard to do but it is worth it, i quit back in november, and i was suprised how easy it was for me but i suppose the decition has to be set and you have to really want to do it, to be successful"

Elaine said: "I just got back from a vacation and I saw the craziest thing printed on a cigarette pack. It said "SMOKING KILLS" in large letters on the backside. I had never seen a cigarette package like that. To make it even worse, they cost a lot of money. It seems that a giant warning like that can't be ignored."

Elaine said: "Cigarettes are more dangerous than an extra 30 pounds. Whatever way you decide to adrress it, I wish you much success!"

Nice way to take your savings and invest in something that you need. Makes you feel better about yourself!"

UniqueMystique said: "Everyone in my family smokes. I have no idea how I had the willpower not to pick up that habit. Growing up...I never noticed the stench that cigarrette smoke made. I've since moved away and when I visit my family....I don't really notice the smell until I return home to my smoke free house. The smell comes back with me on my clothes, my suitcases, my hair, etc. My grandmother had COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder)...she was on oxygen and smoked up until her last days. My mother is a chain smoker...has a nasty cough...she even smoked while pregnant with me. I suspect she will have more breathing problems in the years to come. I've recently had minor breathing problems crop up and I'm sure that it is the result from living in secondhand smoke most of my life. Good luck to those of you who are trying to kick the habit!!!! You'll benefit greatly from it."
