Newbies Challenge! Let's all start and stay on track together!Newbies Challenge! Let's all start and stay on track together!
singlemomof2 said: "I did the photo thing when I was alot heavier and it is a good motivator. I still use some of those photos when I think there is just no way I will lose anymore and feel like giving up. I look at those and say I lost that much and look great now compared to what I did then. I feel better now, and I will lose the last 30.
I have a software program where I track my food and weight, measurements and just about everything. It was only like $20 and one of the smartest things I purchased. With paper I always rip it up and start over, so no way to see how far I really have come.
Right Now:
Weight 182
Measurements: Chest 42" Waist 39.5" Hips 43" Thighs 23.25" & 24"
There is my starting point. Makes me nervous!!
Good Luck all. :)"
singlemomof2 said: "I always thought I was big boned as well, come to find out it was just my build that allowed me to hide a lot of my weight. I never looked as big as I was, thankfully. But still looked bigger than I wanted. I still have rather broad shoulders and wider hips, those are things that just won't go away, so am focusing on what I can change.
I know about the boyfriend support...LOL. They love us how we are, we know this, but them and us would really love to see the thin goddess within. My bf is 6'4" and a bean pole, so I get a bit annoyed when he forgets and pigs out in front of me.
I agree, even if it is you and I alone. We can handle it. Pep talks and sharing the falls we have. Keep your chin up. Remember we are all a goddess inside!! ;)"

At this site we do not discriminate against newcomers, infact we even have persons who have already lost their weight and are in their maintainance stage that still post to this site.
As a regular I welcome you and if you have questions just ask away. You'll find that answers come to you from persons who are at all different stages of their struggle.
By just speaking to newbe's alone you cannot get the information and support that you came to this site for. You need to contact everyone. Persons who could give you advice on how they did it, along with persons who know just what you are going through. Just read any thread you're interested in and give a reply and you will be responded to. No-one is treated like a stranger around here. We're all treated, as you will come to realise, as if we're part of one big family.
Again I say, welcome.:D[/QUOTE]
Thank you for that advice. I guess since it was my first day I was looking to attach to someone else that was new. But you are correct in using the other members who have been here longer and may have a stronger center of conviction. I am new to this and did not wish to appear as if I was discriminating against anyone. Your message has made me realize that all of you can be a help in my weight loss, as well as me being able to help all of you.
Again, Thank You."
Almarie said: "Hey there!
I would love to join your challenge. I weigh 200 pounds and its about time I start to do something about it since I'm starting with a new chapter in my life next year. I'm giong to University. I really want to lose the weight so that nothing can hold me back form enjoying every moment of it. But I know how hard the first few weeks or even months can be so I really don't want to do this alone. So let us all stand together and help each other. I would really be thankfull if someone can help me stand strong to get through."
Almarie said: "Wow that is great Queen!!
I'm not going full on just jet but in five days when my exams are finished and all that stress is gone hopefull the pounds will go too. I'm too scared to gamble with the food right now coz I have very low blood suger levels and if I change my eating habbits right now I'm scared that i might not be able to consentrate in the exams. So I'm taking a five day leave and then I'm going for gold!!"
Almarie said: "Yes I'm still here, that is really great Oueen! Just one more day to go then I'm with you!"
shirley said: "Hi. I just joined today, and I think your ideas are great, and you already seem to be well on your way to losing the weight. I haven't taken my measurements yet, but I went to the Doctor this week, so I know I weigh 161. My goal weight is 135. I'm 27 yrs old, 5'7. My weight problem is directly related to having babies. Anyway, my husband is taking me to Hawaii in January and I really want to look hot in a swim suit by then, so here's to the journey ahead!

shirley said: "Sorry that you're feeling crummy. The kids and I have had a bug this week, too. Being sick really makes you really how much you take for granted being healthy. Well, I hope you get better soon. I'm going to take the kids for a walk now, because its nice and sunny today. :)

shirley said: "I was going to take my measurements yesterday but I couldn't find my tape measure anywhere. I'll keep looking. I also went to do Taebo this morning and my tape was broken!! (Yes, I have it on VHS because its prehistoric) I've had it for l like 10 years, since it first came out. I guess that's a good excuse to go out and buy a new workout video. That's a good Christmas gift idea for the hubby.
But this morning I weighed in at 158. Down 3 pounds.

We're all in this struggle together....we may be at different stages of the journey but we've all been at the beginning of the road at least once."
spectrachic311 said: "Doing a "photo diary" would be such an awesome progress tracker. I wish I would have done that. Take a picture every week in your undies and then at the end, you could do a "flip book" and watch yourself melt away!! Heehee :)"
spectrachic311 said: "Just remember, too, that even among us on here that are done losing weight, we aren't perfect either. We can all learn from each other. And we still have bad days or bad habits we should break. I drink more diet soda than I should and I probably don't eat enough calcium every day. And even though I've pretty much got the exercising thing down to a routine, I'm not always super-motivated either. That's why this forum is so great...everyone helps each other out, no matter where they are in their journey!"
spectrachic311 said: "I know it's hard to hold your family accountable. It's not an easy thing to do. When my mom was actively doing Weight Watchers, she'd always ask me and my dad for feedback on how she was doing. I think once my dad told her that she should be counting her points more accurately since she was using WAY more Cool Whip on her dessert than 2 Tbsp. She pretty much flipped out, even though he was right. But she didn't mind at all when her WW buddies told her that they counted extra points for bigger serving sizes. Cuz yeah, family can be weird like that. :)"

Good luck on everything! :)"

I love the idea of a photo journal wish I had thought of it... but it is still early enough for me to begin... I'll get film tomorrow for my camera or even try using my digital camera. I have already be doing the measuring thing hopefully the photo journal will help motivate me more. I'm curious to know what I look like in a picture since I tend to shy away from taking pics since I know how big I am.... Thanks for the tips!!!
Jacki
By the way.... beware of my typos lol :)"

Ovahkummer said: "Congrats Queen,
Keep up your efforts and don't get discouraged when the scale stops moving!!!!!
It's a really hard thing to lose weight but my philosophy is that if you have someone who will support and hold you accountable you are more likely to stick to your plan. Most of the time those who are around us namely, husbands, wives, girlfriends or boyfriends are supportive(or so they say) but they don't usually hold us accountable without comming off negatively. So that's why I love this place so very, very much."

QueenOfKing said: "Hi everyone! I just joined today and saw that there were a TON of others who just joined today or yesterday or this week as well!
Let's all stay on track together! Any of us who have tried to lose weight before know that the first few days, weeks, (Sometimes HOURS!) are the hardest. Let's all come here and talk and support each other and report on how we're doing.
Today is day ONE for me. I weigh 247 pounds. (UGGG)
I WILL do this.
Brandy"
QueenOfKing said: "Okay, I'll start!
Some things that I am going to do and I think would help us all are the following:
TODAY take your measurements!
Take a photograph of yourself in something such as a swimsuit or shorts, etc.
Write down your weight or keep it on a spreadsheet along with your measurements.
Keep a daily food journal"
QueenOfKing said: "Thank you Scarlett! I hope a few others will join me!
I can't wait!

QueenOfKing said: "Wow... still no one has joined me?? :(
C'mon people! I have seen at least 5 newbies introduce themselves. Don't tell me you've given up already! We're in this together!
Let's do this!

QueenOfKing said: "Hi singlemomof2!
Welcome! I will be taking my dreaded measurements tonight
I started yesterday at 247 pounds. I'm 29, 5'7, large boned, and I am very sensitive to carbs. The diet I follow is a combination of lowered carbs and lowered fat -- basically I eat lots of lean protein, chicken, fish, turkey, etc. and green veggies, with the occasional -- very occasion (maybe twice per week) oats or whole wheat tortilla.
I guess my hopes for this group is for those that are interested to check in and tell how they're doing, if they're struggling, let everyone help everyone else, talk about their obstacles, their successes. I know for me support is a hard thing to get, I have a wonderful boyfriend who loves me the way I am, though he knows *I'd* be happier at a lesser weight, and he's struggling with his weight as well. And let's face it, it's always easier when you have a female that understands what you're going through.
Anyway, my name is Brandy, glad to meet you! Can't wait for this group to get bigger, and even if it doesn't, you and I WILL DO THIS!
Brandy"

Ovahkummer...
I think you may have missunderstood the meaning of my starting this challenge thread.
By starting this group, just as singlemomof2 said, it is a group for people who are new to this site as of this week who want to start together, have a commonplace to come to to talk, without having to go through private email or messages. EVERYONE is welcome however... it was just a place for all of us new people to get together and talk and dish out our struggles. I am not new to dieting by no means, as I said in my post in my introduction thread, I lost 60 pounds last year... I know HOW to lose weight... that is not the problem, that is not why I need support or help... it's the support of being able to talk to other people who are going through what I am going through and so we can all support each other. I hope you understand...
Almarie!!! Welcome! Glad to have you here with us!
Today is day three for me and I'm down (drummmmrollll) 6.5 pounds. woo hoo!
Granted, that's water weight, but I'm glad to see the scale going down....
I also want to tell everyone that this group is not for any single diet plan... just as this site is for any diet plan, you will not be discriminated against for the diet you choose.... lose weight your way.... whether it be low fat, low carb, whatever....
Okay, that's it for me for now... I'm going to go clean a little house and do some scrapbooking :-)"
QueenOfKing said: "Almarie, good luck on your exams! I know studying can be stressful and hard on your brain but you're probably right to try and get through them so that you can
give 110% to eating right. Once you get on track then stay on track... that way next time the exams roll around, instead of reaching for bad things to eat, you'll know that it's not worth it wrecking your eating plan for stress eating.
I know that we have to find other ways of dealing with stress... and let's face it, stress hits ALL of us, sometimes EVERY day. We can't just say oh, that's it, I can't handle it, I'm going to eat XY and Z. We have to find other alternatives to dealing with stress than by turning to FOOD. I know for me, going to the gym and getting my workout done relieves stress. Going for a walk will do you wonders. Sometimes just getting out of the house and going to Wal Mart or something and just walking around even if you're not buying something, just "window shopping" for an hour or two... I know for me, if I go to Wal Mart, I'm headed to the women's clothing department, picking out three items, one in my size, a smaller size and trying them on... seeing myself in the mirror trying to try on something that is in a size that I want to be in, and then seeing myself not being able to fit in it, that does it for me everytime....

QueenOfKing said: "Good morning ladies!!
Well, it's about 8:30 a.m. here in Northern New York and I'm having my oats as we speak... will finish off with some green tea and then I'm supposed to be working :)
Have made up my mind nothing is stopping me from getting to the gym tonight... plan on doing about an hour of cardio and half hour of strength training... I know I'll pay for it tomorrow with the aches and pains but that's the price I have to pay for not going to the gym in a month.
I've got my menu planned out for today... wrote everything down after I weighed it all on my food scale, figured out the calories, fat, carbs, protein, etc. Here's what my menu looks like today:
Meal 1: Steel cut oats - 1 c. cals 115 - fat - 2 carbs - 16 - protein 6
Meal 2: Soup 1 c. cals 90 fat 4.5 carbs 5 protein 8
Meal 3: 4 oz chicken breast, celery, lt. ranch, 1 pickle, 1 oz cheese, salsa
(Chicken, salsa, cheese wrap with celery sticks and ranch on side)
cals - 396 - fat - 18.5 carbs - 23 protein - 26
Meal 4: soup - cals 90 fat 4.5 carbs 5 protein 8
Meal 5: 8 oz. haddock filet, 1 c. broccoli - calls 241, fat 3, carbs 8 protein 43
before workout snack: 1c. broccoli 4 oz chicken - cals 170, fat 4 carbs 8 protein 24
Totals: Cals 1102 fat 36.5 carbs 65 (gross, not net) protein 125
protein/fat/carbs ratios 55%/30%/15%
Took my measurements the other night...
Neck: 15.25
Around Breasts: 50
Under Breasts: 42.5
Bicep: 14.25
Forearm: 11.25
Wrist: 6.5
Belly Button: 46
Hips: 49.5
Upper Thigh: 29
Mid-Thigh: 25.5
Calf: 16.75
Okay, I need to get to work... (I'm here, but not working ;)
Will check in later!

QueenOfKing said: "Good morning, ladies!
Weight this morning 239.0
Total loss to date, 8 pounds
I made it to the gym last night, did a mile and a half on the treadmill at 5 % incline, 26 minutes and then worked out shoulders.
Food was good yesterday, didn't eat everything I had planned, as I wasn't hungry by the time meal 4 came around.
Will check in later... where is everyone??
Brandy"
QueenOfKing said: "Weight this morning 235.0

I went to the Y last night and did an hour of cardio (walked at 3.5 mph with incline at different levels throughout) didn't do weights, figured the incline would work legs. Food was good, monthly visitor went away and took four pounds water weight with her :)
Singlemomof2 are you still out there?
Almarie?"
QueenOfKing said: "Hi Almarie! How are the studies going? Good luck on those finals.
Well, I got back from the Y about an hour ago. Did half hour of cardio and then worked shoulders and triceps. And I'm getting a cold :(
I'm off to bed... will check in tomorrow.

QueenOfKing said: "Woo hoo! Welcome Jacki!
Yes, definitely take your pictures AND measurements. I have made the promise to myself to take my measurements each month to see my progress, and my pictures as well. I also printed my pictures and put them in my weight loss journal (a binder where I keep my daily menus, my measurements, my journal and an inspiration tab with pictures of myself and how I WANT to look)
Welcome to the group!

QueenOfKing said: "Welcome Shirley!
I have no doubt you'll be looking hot in a swimsuit by January! Welcome to the group and welcome to Featherish!
I will post more later... I did NOT have a good weekend diet/exercise wise as I've had some type of sinus infection/flu thing going on :(
I will post more later, but everyone feel free to check in and post at random!
Brandy"
QueenOfKing said: "Good morning all!
Shirley, thank you... I am feeling a little better. I went to bed early last night (9 pm!) hoping that rest would help. How is everyone else doing? Has everyone taken measurements and before pictures?

Very inspirational! I think having a goal other than just 'losing weight' is a great motivational tool - one that I'm in desperate need of myself!
And I'm hearing you about wanting the long slender legs!! I'm 6 foot too, and since mother nature forgot to give me anything in the boob department, gotta make the most of the legs!"

just yodelling by said: "Hi - i just signed up as a member and wanted to join your little crusade to personal splendour...
I'm 16 - figure i'm in the younger bracket - as a kid i spent my years first as relatively normal normal, then chubby, to overweight, to bordering obese, and here's the tough confession, cruel cold hard obesity (nobody actually told me this, but looking back i figure i was). Finally, unbelievably, obscurely, impluasibly i actually managed to commit myself to a regimine of exercise and decent eating (hmph  ). And at the beginning of this, i signed myself down to do the 1500 metres in the sports carnival - it was both absolute humiliation and encouragement. Humiliation in the fact that i came last by a number of 100 of metres. But i got a bigger appluase coming in to the finish than the person who came first! That experience gave me a lot of determination.
Anyways - i started at around 82 kg or 179 lb (i'm 6 foot) and sometime along the line i reached 64 kg or 141 lb. Nowadays i'm 66.5 kg (146 lb) and want to reach a dead six zero kg (132 lb- i like that number! :D ). I know i'll never be able to maintain this, but i hope never to return to my prior more extreme weight. But just for a while, a year or two, i want to be stunning - to make the most of the long legs i was granted.
Lastly - i want to run the 1500 again in my last year, 2006. I suppose i'll come last again, but i want to be hot on their heels. (it doesn't help being a fat lazy mole though - but i may dream!)
