Easy loss, my success and a question?

CK101 said: "Hey, I'm new here... again, my user name got erased or something, anyways I'm 18, big body type and I work out and have a nice ammount of muscle, I started out in the beginning of December needing to lose about 40 pounds to be just right. Now I narrowed everything, everyone has said down to a simple 1000 to 1200 calorie a day diet and I have lost 21 pounds since December 1st 2004 to this day, and I havn't weighed since Sunday, I weigh every sunday to see the bigger picture. I went from around 210ish to 189 :D. Now I am pretty sure that if I get down to 170 I should be in really great shape from everything I've researched. Just thought I would say, everyone has said your body will go into starvation mode and store fat, I personally think that is wrong. What if you eat a whole meal the 1 day and it is only 600 calories and it feels you up? Big deal, your body isn't going to store it all, anyways this is a life change for me. I have one question though, I have uhh a reason now I want to hit 170 by April, it should be possible. So my question being, I still have some stumache on me, do ya'll think that within the next 20 pounds I can get rid of it completely?"

As far as the diet and going low calories...it is true that the body will slow the metabolism rate down some in order to hold onto bodyfat because it thinks it is starving in a sense. One day of only 600 calories may not effect it as much, but if this a normal practice of several days it will switch the fat burning process to a slower rate. You need to feed your body to create fuel for it to burn the fat. Just like your car. Eating high protien meals with complex carbohydrates and a lot of water will also help you build your muscles. It is a good way for your body to get the proper nutrients too. I work with a lot a doctors and have spoke with several dieticians and the research I have read has educated me to this. I think what ever works for you is great. I think what is comfortable for the individual and is effective and you stay healthy in the process is good. These are my opinions. Congrats. on your weight loss."

Doing that to yourself won't help. I found this to be sort of an interesting calculation on how many calories you should eat in a day. An Adult male 18 or over should take his "ideal" weight and multiply it by 11. This is how many calories you need daily for this weight. To figure out how many calories per meal, divide this number by 3. Women 18 or above should take their ideal weight and multiply by 10. The rest is the same. According to this, I should be eating roughly 1,250 calories a day and each meal should be around 417 at each meal. Doesn't leave much room for McDonald's..."

Metabolism, fat weight vs. muscle weight, activity level, etc. there are other, more scientific, ways to calculate it, but i don't have access to my old class notebooks to be able to accurately tell you what they are."

Walk, ride a bike, climb stairs....do something. You can even lift weights at a much lighter weight than you normally use and do more sets....this makes it a cardio workout instead of a strength or muscle buliding exercise. I don't think that you can be completely rid of the tummy unless you incorporate cardio into your workout. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!!!"
