Getting really depressed

MarcyGirl said: "Hello to all first of all, I am new here! and of course i have a question that i hope someone can help me answer. I have been exercising now for 3 weeks and watching my diet. Been doing at least a half hour every single night sometimes 45 min or even an hour a night on my eliptical and i have not lost a pound! What is going on? I am 5'4 and weigh 170lbs. I have had 3 kids and i am 31 years old. What am i doing wrong and how come i cannot lose any weight? I am so frustrated yet i dont want to give up because i am determined to lose this weight!"

It is nothing more than a number that is a bunch of bologna, and I don't give any emotion to it anymore. I try to gauge by how I look and feel. That is more accurate most days. I hope this helps..
I agree as well. How are your clothes fitting. Do you see changes in yourself. If you are noticing these things then you are doing fine. Muscle weighs more then fat. Keep up the good work. Watch your diets for things like sugars and high fats. You don't want too much of those."

pixiechic said: "hi marcy. welcome to the forums. instead of being depressed, take a realistic look at things. it is really easy to be depressed about being overweight, but being depressed won't make it go away. i'm assuming that you always haven't been 170 pounds, and you didn't get to that weight overnight. most times, it takes months or even years to accumulate a lot of weight. have you set any goals? goal setting is very important. if you don't know what you are working towards, getting to there is a lot harder. imagine setting out on a cross country road trip. it would be a lot harder to do if you didn't have a roadmap or an itinerary. it would be insane! same thing goes for roadmapping a weight loss plan. diet and exercise are both very important highways you will have to travel to get to your weight loss destination. don't get too caught up on the roadblocks. you can work through them, and they are only temporary anyhow."

BUT DESPITE HAVING THIS SYNDROME I HAVE LOST 12.5LBS SINCE THEN EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT LOSE ANY FOR THE FIRST 2 WEEKS. YOU HAVE TO BE VERY GOOD WITH YOUR DIET AND PLEASE EXERCISE EVERY DAY OK. i have been working my butt off every day since dec 13, 04 and I AM 150% PROUD OF MY SELF FOR CHANGING MY LIFESTYLE. here is what you have to do. BE PERSISTENT, BE VERY PERSISTENT."

MarcyGirl said: "Thank you all so much for all your replys, they have helped me a lot. No, I have not always been 170lbs, I have 3 kids and before i had any of them i was 110lbs, after my first i went right back down to being 115lbs, after the second was when the weight did not just dissappear, i was like 150 after having my second, then after the 3rd i was 160lbs, and over the last year i have put on another 10 ( i am assuming with me getting older and my metabolism slowing down) so I decided to start excersing and eating right and as i said before i have been for the last 3 weeks and nothing! I exersice ever single day! i missed one day in the last 3 weeks. i started to get depressed after just a week of doing it with no results but talked myself up and thought i needed to give it at least another week, but then still nothing, then i tried to think at least my heart and lungs will be heathier if nothing else, but i really want to lose the weight. thank you all again for all your resposes, they have made me feel so much better, i like it here and think i will stick around! My goal weight is 140lbs. (for now anyway, if i make it there i may shoot for more.)"

gizmonel said: "Hey for all of you that are depressed about this FAT thing. what makes me drive so much harder is motivational poems and the first thing i say when i wake is TODAY LET ME BE STRONG AND PERSISTENT, I WILL SUCCEED. i found a great site: http://weeinspirations.com/poemsandstories.html"

Especially if you have just started after a long period time, it might take a little bit of time to see results on a scale. Normally you will lose inches before you lose pounds, so paying attention to how your clothes fit might be a better guide. Just keep at it. Exercise has a lot of other benefits than just weight loss. It helps your immune system and stregthens your endurance. Focus on the good things you are doing for yourself instead of focusing on the lack of weight loss."

Darren said: "Marcy, It's frustrating, but the weight normally comes off slower than it goes on. Plus, its not as much fun taking it off as it is putting it on. :) That being said, throw your scale away. If you work out, you add muscle. The muscle weighs more than fat, so the scale doesn't offer any encouragement. Work out and exercise for a month, and then see how your clothes fit, and go by that. People, myself included, get too concerned with the scale, and lose site of the fact that being healthy is the most important thing."
