Meat Replacements

August 24, 2007 – 10:00 am

If you’ve ever thought about going vegetarian or even cutting back on the amount of meat that you consume, there are plenty of alternatives that are just as tasty and don’t take the life of an animal to produce. I’m going to talk about some products that I’ve used (and like) over the past couple of years.

Morningstar Products. Morningstar makes a number of different soy based products that can be used to replace meat. They include sausages, bacon, chicken fingers, nuggets and sandwich patties. Morningstar also makes burger like crumbles that can be used to make tacos, sloppy joes, spaghetti sauce or other recipes that call for hamburger. In addition to this lineup, they offer Chik’N and Steak Strips (which I don’t like as well) to use for salads or other prepared type of dinners. They also make Corn Dogs which are good from time to time.

Boca Burgers. For some reason I’ve never used Boca products as much as Morningstar, but they also offer crumbles as well as prepared dishes like lasagna and Chipotle wraps. I’ve never really disliked them, I just haven’t used them as much.

..and don’t forget that not every meal has to include meat! You can easily feast on a fresh salad or a baked potato for a satisfying light lunch. The point is, lowering the amount of meat that you eat isn’t that difficult to do when you use your imagination and realize that there are other meat alternatives out there.

Inventor Makes Discovery That Kills Cancer Cells

August 23, 2007 – 11:09 am

An inventor from Erie, Pennsylvania has made an amazing discovery that kills cancer cells.

John Kanzius

John Kanzius, working with Jim and Charlie Rutkowski has been working on perfecting a device that will cancer cells using salt water and radio waves. They’ve invented the Kanzius RF machine, which uses special nanoparticles to kill off cancer cells without damaging the healthy cells that surround them.

The discovery has significant importance to Mr. Kanzius, who is himself battling leukemia.

Many doctors and scientists are already interested in the Kanzius RF machine, they believe that it could be a major breakthrough in finding a cure for cancer that doesn’t involve chemotherapy or radiation, both of which are incredibly hard on the body.

“If we can come up with ways of delivering these particles to the cancer cells, but not to normal cells, this treatment will work. There’s not a doubt in my mind. Any kind of cancer, anywhere in the body!” said Doctor Steven Curley.

Doctor Curley leads the research team at MD Anderson and has published many books and chapters dealing with hepotocellular cancer, gallbladder cancer, bile duct cancer, or liver metastases.

Just like all medical procedures, this one must withstand further testing before it can be released for widespread use, but definitely sounds like it holds promise as a viable way to treat cancer at some point in time.

Swimmer’s Ear Home Remedy

August 15, 2007 – 4:37 pm

I had the misfortune recently of getting a case of “Swimmer’s Ear”, and I was fortunate enough to cure it with this home remedy, so I thought I’d make the information available to anyone else suffering from this malady.

All you need to cure your Swimmer’s Ear is the miracle substance known as H202 or Hydrogen Peroxide. You will also need a small ear plunger, or syringe, as they may be called. Here’s an example:

I’m sure if you had to rig up a contraption, it shouldn’t be a problem, as long as it will suck out the ear wax from the ear canal. Here’s the instructions to follow to get rid of the build up of ear wax which causes Swimmer’s Ear.

  • Lay on one side. Tilt your head and drop enough hydrogen peroxide into your ear so that it “fills up”
  • You’ll hear it fizzing, believe it or not. Wait for about 3-5 minutes until it’s done. The fizzing is the ear way being dissolved
  • Suck out excess peroxide and ear wax with your syringe
  • Flip to other side and let your ear drain fully into waiting towel or napkin
  • Wait about 10 minutes to 20 minutes and do other ear

You may have to do this for a few days until your ears are clear of wax. It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you.

Proposed Tax Increase Could Help Cover Children Without Health Insurance

August 6, 2007 – 7:51 pm

A bill that has been passed in both the House and the Senate seeks to provide improved health care for children that aren’t covered by health insurance.

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or the SCHIP program, would be funded by the Federal government and would pass tax money along to State governments to provide funding to low income families with children for health care. This health care be provided by either state programs or private health insurance, depending on the state.

If this bill is passed and signed by the President, it will be funded primarily by a federally mandated tobacco tax, making the price of smoking even more expensive for the people that can still afford to do it.

Are you in favor of this tax increase?

United States To Help China Improve The Safety Of Their Exports

August 3, 2007 – 12:21 pm

A US official recently stated that the United States will work with China to help improve the safety of their food and drug exports.

It you’ve spent any time reading recent news on product recalls, China has been to blame for a massive recall of cat and dog food, imported children’s toys that use lead based paint and are under fire for shipping seafood that has chemicals that have banned in the US.

US health officials in Beijing this week offered China’s quality inspectors technical assistance to address food and drugs safety problems, Secretary of Health Mike Leavitt said in the statement.

They also offered to work with Chinese officials and a particular company under a US import alert to show local authorities how to help exporters take necessary steps to meet US requirements and safety standards, he said.

‘If successful, this approach could be a model for other firms affected by an import alert,’ Leavitt said.

What are your thoughts on making global safety requirements mandatory for products shipped to the US? Is it something that’s long overdue?

Vegetarian Lifestyle Helps To Cut Corners

July 26, 2007 – 3:37 pm

After being a vegetarian for over two years, it’s hard to imagine going back to a life of eating meat.

Buying only fruits and vegetables can drastically reduce the amount of money that you spend at the grocery store.

Here are some examples of what fresh fruits and vegetables cost in my neck of the woods.

  • Fresh Corn On The Cob- Corn on the cob has been priced at 3 ears for .99 cents.
  • Iceburg Lettuce- A head of Iceburg lettuce is about $1.29 a head, more than half of what a bagged salad costs.
  • 5 Pound Bag Of Idaho Potatoes- 5 pounds of spuds runs about $3.00 a bag and can be cooked in a lot of different ways.
  • Cucumbers- Cucumbers usually cost around .59 cents and are great to top salads or sliced up as a healthy snack.
  • Carrots- Carrots are crunchy and sweet and always cost under $3.00 for a pound of peeled baby style. Regular carrots cost even less and are great as a side dish or right out of the refrigerator.
  • Bananas- Bananas usually run between .49- .79 cents a pound and are packed with potassium, a nutrient that our body needs to stay healthy… and kids love them, to boot!
  • Peppers- Peppers are a tad bit more expensive than some other veggies, but pack a lot of taste.. they certainly cost less than a New York Strip steak per pound.

If you are fortunate to live somewhere that has country markets or roadside vegetable stands, you might even be able to find better bargains on everything from apples to zucchini and every fruit and vegetable between.

Even if you can’t go vegetarian “full time,” you should try to implement at least a few meals that don’t require meat to make them complete. You’ll be surprised how quickly this will help to reduce the amount of cash you spend when grocery shopping.
