A US official recently stated that the United States will work with China to help improve the safety of their food and drug exports.

It you’ve spent any time reading recent news on product recalls, China has been to blame for a massive recall of cat and dog food, imported children’s toys that use lead based paint and are under fire for shipping seafood that has chemicals that have banned in the US.

US health officials in Beijing this week offered China’s quality inspectors technical assistance to address food and drugs safety problems, Secretary of Health Mike Leavitt said in the statement.

They also offered to work with Chinese officials and a particular company under a US import alert to show local authorities how to help exporters take necessary steps to meet US requirements and safety standards, he said.

‘If successful, this approach could be a model for other firms affected by an import alert,’ Leavitt said.

What are your thoughts on making global safety requirements mandatory for products shipped to the US? Is it something that’s long overdue?
