Are You Tough Enough to Face Your Addictions?

I was watching today’s Tyra show, which focused on addictive behavior. They had guests whose addictions ranged from pornography, makeup, hair and even sneakers. The pornography buff would literally lock him away for hours, surfing the web for porn, while his wife and children were left feeling neglected. The makeup addict wasn’t able to go to the mailbox or jog without being fully made up. The sneaker addict, (an addiction I had never heard of), spends approximately $12,000 a year on all kinds of sneakers and measures his life by the sneakers that he owns. The hair addict was addicted to her hair weave and couldn’t go 7 days without one, because she didn’t feel as beautiful without it.
They had a psychologist on the show who pointed out that when an addiction affects your life to the point that your spouse is ready to walk out on you, it’s taking away from your life, instead of adding to it. How many of us here have addictions that are interfering with our physical or emotional fitness? Are you addicted to food, which prevents you from losing weight? How about television, which prevents you from taking time to work out because you might miss your program? Are you so addicted to exercise that you are hurting yourself physically? And yes, I have my own addictions, one of which includes chocolate. This addiction has definitely had an adverse effect on my fitness goals. I’ve made the concession to try to limit myself to chocolate soymilk, which I like to blend with fresh strawberries. It’s better than eating the German chocolate cake I used to stuff in my mouth everyday, but the addiction is still there. What addictions do you face and how does it keep you from reaching your fitness goals. Here’s an affirmation that I’m going to be saying to myself everyday, I am stronger than my addiction. Say it 10 times and mean it. Peace - Rhonda
