What Are Your Thoughts On Pizza?

Darren and I have always debated over whether or not pizza is healthy. I contend that pizza can’t be the worst thing for you, provided that you choose healthy toppings. Obviously, pizzas packed with pepperoni, sausage, and bacon are going to pack more fat and calories than a pizza topped with mushrooms, green peppers, onions, or banana peppers.

I’m not suggesting that eating a pizza every day is ideal for anyone, but as a part of well balanced diet and an active lifestyle, can an occasional pizza be the worst thing for you? It has tomato sauce which is a vegetable, cheese for some dairy and the crust which is a grain. Order it with a thin crust and subtract even more calories.

What are your opinions on pizza? Do you view it as an “evil” food?

  2. Well-made pizza with fresh ingredients, and, as you suggest, healthy toppings, is hardly “evil” food! One of my favorite pizza crusts is a thin wholewheat with lots of grains. Not only is it tastier than plain crust, but it is so much better for you.
I think the cheese is really the sticking point, since it is laden with fat. Even “low fat” mozzarella is about 20% fat, I think. You could try switching the tomato and cheese topping for a pesto mix. Now THAT’S yummy!

  3. I don’t think pizza is “evil”, but I personally don’t care for it too much. I know that’s weird, but I just never really liked it. I think if you get a thin crust with healthy toppings, a piece or two every so often won’t kill you. What you have to watch out for is the “stuffed crust” or “meat explosion” type pizzas that have extra calories crammed in. A slice of thin crust veggie topped pizza runs about 130 calories while a slice of pan style stuffed crust meat lover’s is a whopping 700 or so calories.

  5. I really like the thin, whole wheat crust pizzas that are loaded with veggies. I don’t feel bad for eating a few slices of it and I don’t feel all bloated and stuffed after eating it. I think most anything can be made healthier and there’s no reason not to enjoy the foods that you love every now and then….just make some changes to make your choices healthier.
