Are You A Self Starter?

Almost every ad for employment has a line that something along these lines: “looking for a self-starter”. Of course they are. As a manager, what better type of people to have work for you then people who set their own goals and accomplish their own tasks? Self-starters are worth more than “order takers” who sit around and wait for YOU to manage them.

Everyone loves a self-starter

I’ve always been a self-starter. I actually made over $100 week when I was 9 years old doing a paper route 7 days a week. Nobody had to tell me to get up and go. I wanted money bad enough to get myself out of the house every morning and hustle. I would always collect my accounts too, without hesitation, to make sure I got paid.

The Plain Dealer (Cleveland’s number one and only newspaper) loved me for my efforts. I never had a problem getting more papers. In fact, when I finally quit my newspaper route at age 18 (that’s right: 9 straight years), I had enough money to pay for all fours years of college, and get wasted in the process. (Not really, once I started doing that too much I started running out of money a lot faster than expected).

The main thing that motivated me to keep my newspaper job was money. I wanted it and the constant work always paid off. I could collect money every day, and never had to be broke like almost all of my friends. It’s very easy to be a self-starter when it comes to money.

Self-starters are still needed, for everything.

The principle of being a self-starter will come into play again in life, no matter what you decide to do. No one will be as motivated as you to make changes in your life. No one else can actually help you accomplish anything. It’s completely up to you. Are you a self starter? I’m sure everyone can be if they stay focused on their goals.

If you’ve been hemming and hawing about some project you need to accomplish, I will encourage you to give it your best, and go it alone. You don’t need anyone to help you finish. Set your mind, choose your goal, and proceed to use your best efforts to complete your task.
